Guest Johnny Blaze Posted December 4, 2002 Report Posted December 4, 2002 So I was watching the 96 Lyger/Muta match (the one where Lyger gets his mask taken off and then spits mist at Muta) and I was wondering if there was any backstory about the whole good/evil angle they seemed to be playing up. Lyger was wearing all white and Muta came out in some crazy getup that was all black. I dug the storytelling in the match, even though the work was Muta's usual lazy garbage, but I wanted to know if there was any buildup prior to the match regrading the good/evil stuff. I haven't been able to find anything on it elsewhere. Also, on a totally unrelated note, what's the deal with the Tiger Driver 91. What happened when Misawa first debuted it? Was it the finisher for some huge match or was there any buildup surrounding it? Or was it just the first time he happened to do it was in 91 and the aura around it is all smark hype?
Guest Black Tiger Posted December 5, 2002 Report Posted December 5, 2002 The Lyger vs. Muta match was Lyger's return from his brain tumor scare. Misawa just happened to debut the TD '91 against Taue in 1991, hence the name, same reasoning for Akiyama to call his wrist clutch Exploder Exploder '98
Guest Special K Posted December 5, 2002 Report Posted December 5, 2002 Boy, that makes it even more depressing that it was a glorified squash.
Guest Corey291 Posted December 6, 2002 Report Posted December 6, 2002 The Lyger vs. Muta match was Lyger's return from his brain tumor scare. Actually, Liger's first match back from his brain tumor scare was against Chris Benoit on 9/23/96. He wrestled The Great Muta the following month on 10/20/96. -Corey
Guest The Metal Maniac Posted December 6, 2002 Report Posted December 6, 2002 As an add-on to the original question: Had Lyger's mask ever been pulled off before/after that match? If so, was he wearing facepaint then as well?
Guest DragonflyKid Posted December 6, 2002 Report Posted December 6, 2002 Sano tore Liger's mask pretty good in their 1/30/90 match, he wasn't wearing facepaint.
Guest PlatypusFool Posted December 6, 2002 Report Posted December 6, 2002 That was such a good match, by the way. In fact, all Lyger / Sano matches that I have seen were stunning. *goes and watches his best of early Lyger comp.*
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted December 11, 2002 Report Posted December 11, 2002 Sano tore Liger's mask pretty good in their 1/30/90 match, he wasn't wearing facepaint. Doesn't taking off his mask, kill that whole mystique Lyger has? I mean, it's like taking off Batman's mask. He'd still be Batman, but that whole mystique is dead when you see underneath, he's just a regular guy.
Guest Corey291 Posted December 12, 2002 Report Posted December 12, 2002 Well, Liger had his mask ripped off by Sano, and I think by El Samurai as well. But this happened in the early 1990s and Liger obviously suffered no damage to his character. In fact, when Liger's mask had been completely ripped off against Sano, the commentators even revealed Liger's real name. Had this happened in Mexico, it might have been different. But in Japan, it actually made the match even more exciting. The crowd was going ballistic in it's response. Liger was bloody (which might be the reason why he removed his mask. so he could see properly), and the audience was really into the match. -Corey
Guest Jubuki Posted December 12, 2002 Report Posted December 12, 2002 I think the idea of Liger being just a regular guy was already well-known, genius.
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Posted December 12, 2002 Report Posted December 12, 2002 Besides didn't he wrestle with no mask for much of his early career?
Guest The Last Free Voice Posted December 12, 2002 Report Posted December 12, 2002 NO! Lyger is a REAL DEMON/ WHATEVER HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE! He is above us!
Guest Jubuki Posted December 12, 2002 Report Posted December 12, 2002 If you ever speak again, please let your only words be, "Yes, Doctor, I want you to neuter me."
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Posted December 13, 2002 Report Posted December 13, 2002 He's not a demon anyways. Isn't the character that of an animal god?
Guest tajiriisgod Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 He's not a demon anyways. Isn't the character that of an animal god? Yeah, I think Jushin is Japanese for "God of animals". Don't quote me on that, though, I'm not sure.
Guest RickyChosyu Posted December 15, 2002 Report Posted December 15, 2002 His character is based off a late eighties anime series by the same name. There's a review of it at DVDVR if you're interested. He's basically a Tiger/Lion God.
Guest The Last Free Voice Posted December 17, 2002 Report Posted December 17, 2002 Oh really? Cool. Thanks for the info. Muta's charachter is a demon then right? [really new t this, please forgive]
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 Yes I'm well aware of the Anime. I'm an otaku after all. And yes i mean Otaku. Not a DBZ Dubbie who's only connection to Anime is Dubbed DBZ and Pokemon. I'm full on subbie man.
