Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Fred McMurray, Best Actor for Double Indemnity. For people who only know McMurray has Steve in My Three Son's, he plays the underhanded creep so well. Cain Mutiny is anothe example of this. Ted Knight, Best Supporting Actor for Caddyshack. One of the funniest and well written comedy's ever. Knight was the backbone playing the strait man to Chase, and Dangerfield Margaret Hamilton, Best Supporting Actress for The Wizard of Oz. A perfect choice for the Wicked Witch. She did such a good job that I was afraid for years of the witch.
Guest Ozymandias Report post Posted December 6, 2002 It's fucking disgraceful that Gary Oldman didn't win Best Actor for Sid & Nancy. I won't get into the fact that he wasn't even nominated, 'cuz if I do I'll go mad....
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Gotta agree Verne- Double Indemnity is a classic and MacMurray is just so fantastic in the movie that you can't help root for him to get away with it
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Ellen Burstyn, Best Actress for Requiem for a Dream. She was completly robbed by Julia Roberts. Erin Brockovich is such an overrated movie and Julia did nothing to deserve winning it over Burstyn. All of the actors who lost the best supporting actor Oscar to Cuba Gooding Jr. for Jerry Maguire. Cuba is and will always be a mediocre decent at best actor. All of the actresses who lost the best supporting actress Oscar to Marisa Tomei for My Cousin Vinny. She's not a bad actress by any means, but there's no way she deserved an Oscar for My Cousin Vinny
Guest godthedog Report post Posted December 6, 2002 it would take weeks to list all the robbery that has been going on for 70+ years at the oscars. the most recent example i can think of is 'gosford park' winning best original screenplay over 'memento'. as i always say: they are, have always been, and always will be a joke. an academy award is meaningless, and i don't understand why ANYONE takes the whole thing seriously at all. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted December 6, 2002 I'm more upset that Donnie Brasco and Memento didn't even get best pic nominations in really weak years then anyone who won that I can think of.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Stalag 17 for Best Picture.
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Titanic over L.A. Confidential for best picture was the worst I can think of.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Steve Martin won awards left and right for All of Me and didn't even get a blink from the Academy for it. The fact that Paul Newman got basically a pity Oscar for Color Of Money when he should have won for numerous past films such Cool Hand Luke and the Verdict. Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton are tied for the most Oscar nominations without a win at 7. Oddly they were both nominated for best actor for their roles in Beckett. Orson Welles only has a best screenplay award to his credit, which he shares from Citizen Kane, which practically got snubbed. Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar despite six nominations and Verne might not liked this, but he jobbed to Billy Wilder twice. Cary Grant never won an Oscar and only has two scant nominations. I'm sure I can pop off a few more later.
Guest Special K Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Probably the worst: Rocky over Taxi Driver. Now I like Rocky, but wow, what a fuckup. Big epics always winning: See Gump, Braveheart, Titanic, Fucking GLADIATOR. Sure they're all fun, and pretty stirring, but are they EVER anything new? Certain epics like Private Ryan deserve lots of notice, but epics always have a huge advantage over subtler moview
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted December 6, 2002 anytime they give someone a "makeup" Oscar for snubbing them in the past. Dear God that pisses me off. And it seems that every year, at least one of the year's five best movies does not get a best picture nomination, no matter what year it is.
Guest Lord of The Curry Report post Posted December 6, 2002 - Jim "Giant Worthless Tool" Broadbent over Ian McKellan for best Supporting Actor. - Gladiator over Traffic - I don't doubt that The Two Towers will somehow get fucked over this year as well.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted December 6, 2002 I think they will "Screw" Two Towers because they plan on Giving them the after the 3rd and final installment...So look for Gangs of New York To Win it...if it's as good as Hype indicates.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar despite six nominations and Verne might not liked this, but he jobbed to Billy Wilder twice. I would say Hitch deserved it for Psycho, but I gotta give Wilder the nod for Lost Weekend.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Hell, just look at last year's Oscars. They didn't even bother to go by best performance it was just the "try to make up for 70 years of keeping the brother man down" show. If you were black you got an Oscar. Or in Halle's case, at least pretend you're black.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted December 6, 2002 The whole lets give the awards to them because they're black vibe did annoy me. However it wasn't that big of a deal to me. I mean at least they won them for good roles. In fact it was Halle's only good role at this point of her career. If both won for shitty roles i would've been pissed off. Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted December 6, 2002 If you were black you got an Oscar. I thought Denzel Washington deserved the oscar for Training Day. Oscar screw-ups: First and foremost: Taxi Driver NOT winning best picture. WHAT THE FxCK were they THINKING?! DeNiro not winning best Actor for Taxi Driver Martin FUCKING Scorsese never EVER winning Best Director (although the Acadamy has a chance to rectify this next year) Gladiator winning Best Picture over Almost Famous Memento winning Best Picture last year (that or LOTR) Se7en getting no nominations Being John Malkavitch not getting nominated for Best Picture (American Beauty should've won, if not that then Fight Club, but BJM could've at LEAST been nominated) I'll think of more later
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted December 6, 2002 I think he deserved an Oscar too but he's done a lot better than Training Day.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted December 6, 2002 You all forget that Denzel Washington already had an Oscar. Best supporting actor for Glory.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Probably the worst: Rocky over Taxi Driver. Now I like Rocky, but wow, what a fuckup. 'ordinary people' over 'raging bull' was much worse.
Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted December 6, 2002 not seen 'Ordinary People' so I can't say
Guest spiny norman Report post Posted December 7, 2002 Russel Crowe should've won Best Actor last year. Denzel Washington was very good, but Crowe's performance was one of the best I've ever seen. Spielberg winning Best Director for Saving Private Ryan. But I just hate that movie. Fargo didn't beat English Patient in 1996. English Patient is the definition of winning based on being an epic. The Crying Game should've won more Oscars in 1991, but it lost to Silence Of The Lambs, so I won't whinge too much. Bruce Beresford wasn't even nominated for Driving Miss Daisy. Stupid Academy Oh, I forgot to mention. Oliver! won Best Picture for 1968. 2001: A Space Odyssey wasn't even nominated.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted December 7, 2002 Russel Crowe should've won Best Actor last year. Denzel Washington was very good, but Crowe's performance was one of the best I've ever seen. Yes Crowe's performance was better, but i didn't mind him losing because he didn't really deserve it when he won it for Gladiator the year before. This was a case of the Oscars not giving an award to make up for an undeserving win instead of their usual give them the award to make up for screwing them before. Guest RavishingRickRudo Report post Posted December 7, 2002 Anyone who was nominated for the oscar which Dame Judi Dench for Shakespeare in Love won. Tom Cruise in Magnolia. FUCK Michael Caine, Cruise shoulda won. If not him, Michael Clarke Duncan.. But Michael Caine!? Dear god! If him and Judi Dench ever make a movie together, you KNOW it will be nomitated and will win a billion oscars...
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted December 7, 2002 Dench won because she was snubbed in the past. And Caine won because he basically flushed his last Oscar win down the toilet and was always very apologetic about it. Tom Cruise will never win an Oscar, because he's a pretty boy that doesn't carry "Oscar weight" with his name. Same reason Burt Reynolds didn't win for Boogie Nights, because he still had that stigma from the seventies when they wouldn't even nominate him for Starting Over, but nominated the two principle females. They also liked Robin Williams much better and felt they owed him. It's all politics.
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Report post Posted December 7, 2002 Crowe winning for Gladiator (a totally predestrian role) but not winning for The Insider (his best performance ever and one of my all-time favorites) was pretty upside down.
Guest Mikey2Dope Report post Posted December 7, 2002 Annie Hall over Star Wars for Best Picture
Guest spiny norman Report post Posted December 7, 2002 Eh, Annie Hall is a pretty good movie, Star Wars gets tiresome sometimes for me. I prob prefer Star Wars, but I wouldn't call it a great injustice or anything. Amelie didn't get Foreign Film this past time. Um, okay?
Guest What? Report post Posted December 7, 2002 Memento winning Best Picture last year (that or LOTR) Neither Memento or LotR won last year. "A Beautiful Mind" did. That's my major Oscar scrw-up. A Beautiful Mind winning. I hate Russel Crowe with a vengeance, and that movie did no deserve Best Picture. Oscar Greatness? (cuz this thread is to damn negatie) Steve Martin hosting. "The news of people trying to kidnap Russel Crowe is over...and I'd just like to say this...Tom Hanks, you should be ashamed of yourself." Then Tom slowly lowered his head in shame...GOD, I laughed my ass off.
