Guest lomasmoney Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Ken Griffey Jr. was nearly traded to the San Diego Padres but Phil Nevin nixed the deal. I dont understand why Cincinnati would give up one of the best players of the last decade+ for a guy who's taken 10 years to show the potential he had when he was the number 1 pick. Since I'm kinda a cinncinati native this would have made me cry. I was so happy when the reds got griffey, but he's had two injury filled season and they want to trade him. Any thoughts? Guest alkeiper Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Maybe could've helped both teams. The Reds are knee deep in outfielders, and the Padres have Sean Burroughs at third, so on paper, its a good talent swap. Both had off years and are in their early 30s though, so future performance is hard to gauge.
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Griffey's agent denied this as did the Reds. I don't/won't believe any Griffey trade rumors until they actually happen.
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Well, I guess I was wrong. The deal was in place, but Jim Bowden isn't authorized to trade Griffey so I don't know if it would've gone down. On a side note: If the Reds do trade Sean Casey as rumored, and Ken Griffey Jr. I don't care how nice their stadium is. Their will be fan apathy and low attendance. If they would've pulled crap like this in Riverfront they would've played to Expos like crowds. Also, last I had checked the next season will take place in the year 2003. The year that Cincinnati Reds fans have been told for years would be THE year we would good again. Instead all we are hearing is talk of cutting salary and other bs. The new stadium is here it's not like it won't open for another few years. What's the deal? Linder needs to go. Marge might have had a big mouth, but at least she put a winner on the field. Guest Downhome Report post Posted December 6, 2002 I still don't think that his leaving Seatle should have ever happend, it really did nothing for anyone.
Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted December 7, 2002 I still don't think that his leaving Seatle should have ever happend, it really did nothing for anyone. Seattle came out okay from it.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 7, 2002 Who did Seattle get besides Mike Cameron who is mediocre at best player. It helped Seattle by getting rid of Griffey who was a cancer in the clubhouse.
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted December 7, 2002 As a huge reds fan I hope they trade Casey. In my opinion casey is a great person, perhaps the best in baseball, but I feel he is nothing more than Hal Morris. Take his 7 million a year and larkins 9 million a year next year and they have a lot of money for the better crop of free agents next year. Put Adam Dunn at first and have your outfield be Kearns, Griffey and Branyan. The heart of the reds order goes Walker, Boone, Griffey, Kearns, Dunn, Casey, Larkin, Larue/Stinnet. It wouldn't be hurt that much if Branyan was in casey's spot and that money was used for pitching.
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted December 7, 2002 Who did Seattle get besides Mike Cameron who is mediocre at best player. Seattle got Cameron, Brett Tomko, Jake Meyer, and Antonio Perez. Meyer hasn't played in the majors yet, and neither has Perez for that matter. I think the Reds should trade Sean Casey. 1st basemen are easy to find, and he was absolutely horrid last year. Right now the keys to the Reds franchise are Adam Dunn and Austin Kearns.
Guest Mad Dog Report post Posted December 7, 2002 I'd rather see Griffey go before Larkin or Casey do.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted December 14, 2002 Im hearing that he still wants to be traded. Trade him to Baltimore, that would rule..
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 14, 2002 Griffey said if he doesn't get to pick where he's traded than he'll cause problems for his new team and demand another trade next off season.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted December 14, 2002 Im hearing that he still wants to be traded. Trade him to Baltimore, that would rule... We have enough outfielders, and enough injury problems already. The Mets are probably going to go after Griffey, and the A's are in the market for a CF so they can shift Terrence Long (who sucked in CF last year) to left. They're looking at Jose Cruz Jr, but if they can snag Griffey instead and fit him into their payroll, they'll do it. The money would be the concern, especially since the A's aren't sure they'll be able to pay Tejada next year.
