The "moral superiority" of Canada...

I'm not trying to turn it into a pissing contest, I just want to know what's so wrong with not being a target for terrorists.

Nothing of course but I'm so sick of Canadians acting like they're somehow living in a protective bubble just because they're considered another country when in fact they're just as much part of the U.S as any state. The war against terror isn't just an American operation, it's an operation that should concern the entire advanced Western Civilization. Americans may be the big target, but what these Islamic monsters hate is what America stands for, the very things Canada and the U.K stand for. When those planes went into the towers, it wasn't just an attack against New Yorkers and America, it was attack against every freedom loving Canadian, Brit and Australian. Just because Canadians wave a different flag doesn't mean they should care any less than the least important of U.S states. When an American dies at the hands of a terrorist, a Canadian dies as well. It's not where you live, what flag you wave or how bad your tax rate is that makes you who you are: it's the beliefs and ideas that shape a common bond greater than any border or health care system.

Universal health care causing Canadians to come to the U.S. for treatment? That doesn't even make sense... you got any documentation on that?

Why doesn't it make sense. I've read reports of people crossing the border to get an MRI or their knee scoped because the wait in Candada is to long.

Trust me I've seen stories and I'll post a link the next couple days if I remember or even care by Monday afternoon.

Universal health care is great if you can't afford to pay for surgery. However if you've got the dough then US hospitals have no problems with taking you in right away. That's a very basic explanation, but I think it helps to illustrate the difference between the health systems.

Other stuff...

Canada's military

Remember that Canada's population is roughly one-tenth that of the US. In terms of personnel ratio, I'd guess that it actually measures up favourably to the US military. And this factors into other things like generating capital to support troops and such.

Moral Superiority

If being able to sport a Canadian flag on your backpack means that you feel "morally superior" to Americans, than I'd say that about 90% of Canadians feel that way. Conversely, we gave the world Celine Dion.

Otherwise, you've got a small number (relatively speaking) of idiots on both sides of the border that are firm in their "my way is the best way" mindset. Having lived on both sides of the border, I'd say that both countries have their own pros and cons, and I'm happy to live in either.

Well, that's all well and good, but you're the one who brought up that Canada was less of a target for terrorists than New Mexico was. You think I wasn't scared shitless on 9/11? I live right across the St. Lawrence river from upstate New York, closer to New York City and Washington D.C. than a lot of Americans do. I've never met a Canadian who's gone, 'Well, 9/11 was a horrible thing, but it happened in another country, so I don't have to worry about it.' That's bullshit. Most people I know realized that if the US was going to war, we were going right in with them, along with other western nations.

As for this, "Just because Canadians wave a different flag doesn't mean they should care any less than the least important of U.S states." Ask yourself this question: Does the average Joe from, say, Iowa, care about what's going on in Canada? Probably not, so I don't see why I should give two shits about any law they pass in Iowa, Nebraska, or any other state I'm likely never going to visit. Besides, I hate when people compare Canada, a full-fledged country to one of states in the US. This doesn't happen with any other country, but for some reason, people seem to think it's ok to do it with Canada, and it pisses me off.

Trying to tie-in with the original topic of the thread, I'm not trying to sound 'morally superior' or anything, but there's no reason that everytime Canada is discussed you need to take shots at the Canadian military, just because it isn't comparatively the same size as that of the US.

Dude, you guys have Chris Benoit. Just clone him a billion times, set up a couple hundred thousand in the military, and the rest can wrestle.

To Americans who don't quite get Canadians 'view' on the US- try being a Canadian watching American media.

Go Watch "Bowling For Columbine" and it should be alot clearer why Canadians feel the way they do.

And most Canadians don't hate Americans. We hate American Politcans and the way they use other nations.

I've got no problem with most Americans. Most of them are nice, cool people. But when I see George Bush or Colin Powel on TV, or I watch an American news show your DAMN RIGHT I feel superior to Americans.

Some Americans insult us because we have a small military. NEWS FLASH: We're proud of the fact we don't NEED a large standing army.

Why is Canada a taget for terrorists? It's not just because we're "infidels" the main reason is because we're allies with the States. If we turned our backs on you right now we'd have no worries about terrorists.

I've been to other countries. The first time I didn't have a Canadian flag on my back pack and I was treated very poorly. The next time I wore a Canadian flag and I was treated with dignity and respect.

Why? Because Canadiands don't come off as arrogant where as many Americans do. Wether or not you have the right to be arrogant is another debate entirely.

Oh and saying Canada is no more important than many states is ignorant in the extreme. I'd LOVE to see how America would do if we stopped shipping lumbar, stopped sending water, stopped providing electricity, stopped allowing pipe lines being built through our country.

Doesn't surprise me that Canadians find it better to run around with flags on their backpacks. I doubt Americans act "more arrogant" than Canadians do, I bet the poor treatment from other countries is because of, what else, jealousy, bigotry and intolerance from other nations.

Interesting fact: Canada was in WW2 before the United States.

And as for the Canada/USA debate,I've always thought that Canadians and Americans were pretty much the same.Whenever I meet a Canadian person it doesnt feel like they come from another country.(Dont take that the wrong way,you know what I mean). When Americans and Canadians take shots at each other it's just stupid. We're both good countries, all countires are good countires.

I think Canada was in WWI before the states as well actually, but it's not like it matters; we didn't really have a choice in the matter.

Anyway, I think that whoever said it first was right - it's the politics of the US that tend to cheese Canadians off, not Americans themselves. I don't think you can deny the fact that the US seems to throw it's weight around a lot, and the fact is, a lot of people just don't like that kinda thing.

Canadians also like to feel intellectually superior to Americans, for the most part. I mean, our leader can at least name yours - and when an American tells me what state he's from, I at least have a rough idea of where in the US he's from, as opposed to me naming my home province and getting looked at like I'm from Mars or something.

I have no real qualms with any Americans, and I'm not saying this to start any shit - just trying to give some reasons, is all.

Well what do you think would happen? I believe that eventually we'd pick at you enough to get our way. Lord knows its how we can and do deal with the rest of the sane world. In other words, it's not economically sound not to deal w/ America. We will make sure of that :)

Why would we want to know where the provinces are? Besides Quebec, Canada is just a large extension of Winsconsin, don't you know? :P

On the other hand, there's only a handful number of states you should really care about anyway.

At least we know where Canada is at all, though. We'd be lost without our southern neighbors. ;)

My friend told me that he was in Florida and was talking to this lady and she asked where he was from. He said Canada and she said "Oh. Is that in Europe?"

Florida also doesn't know how to vote correctly. We've been through that ordeal with them many times. :D

lol. I know that most Americans don't think that Canada is in Europe, but that story was soo funny. My friend was in shock when the lady said that and he was like, "um, no. It's the country right above you".

That's nothing. When I went to California 3 years ago someone asked me if we were still fighting the Indians.

I pray to god it was supposed to be a joke but he seemed serious.
