Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted December 10, 2002 I just want to know how 'guarenteed' contracts work exactly, because having 'YOU WILL GET PUSHED' on there could mean anything in the real world, in court vince could just shove big show and say he adhered to the contract. Does it relate to amount of tv time or what?
Guest DragonflyKid Report post Posted December 10, 2002 Guaranteed contracts mean a wrestler is guaranteed a certain salary as opposed to getting a lower contract that has incentives. McMahon started using upside contracts so he could be sure he got what he paid for, when WCW got Turner's money Bischoff started luring away WWF guys by offering them guaranteed contracts which McMahon was unwilling to do until out of desperation he started giving them starting with Taka Michinoku. Instead of getting say $250.000 with he potential to earn more if you draw and sell merchandise in the WWF, WCW offered them much more money guaranteed, I think guaranteed also means if you get hurt you still get paid and you cannot be fired. Mark Henry has been a bust but he got a guaranteed contract so he will earn a huge salary no matter what, he doesn't have to draw a dime or sell merchandise and will still get paid. I believe the WWF tried embarrassing him with the Transvestite and Mae Young angles to the point where he would want out of his contract and the WWF could save money, Henry stuck it out and was sent to OVW but he stayed and continues getting paid. Guest DragonflyKid Report post Posted December 10, 2002 Guaranteed contracts are bad for business, Henry and Big Show have been busts and have never earned the money they are making. In WCW guaranteed contracts brought about a plague of complacency, everyone knew they were making big money with no chance to get fired. They didn't have to put on a good product to lure fans because they would be making money regardless so they didn't give a fuck. Guys with incentive-laden contracts are going to be hungry and would want to earn extra money so they would work hard. Baseball has guaranteed contracts and there have been many busts. Hampton was paid an incredible amount of money but his ERA was awful yet he still got paid as if he was putting up Cy Young type #'s.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted December 10, 2002 From watching the Bobby Heenan shoot interview he claims that guaranteed contracts were one of the things that led to WCW's demise because they had so many wrestlers under contract that weren't even being used. I have to agree with him too.
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted December 10, 2002 yeah, they are stupid, didn't hogan invent them or something? That's a little clearer now, thanks. Whilst i know about the guarenteed pay thing, i still don't get how big show is guarenteed 'a push' as i think he is somehow due to his contract?
Guest Cheech13 Report post Posted December 10, 2002 The reason it is said that Big Show is guaranteed a push because of his contract is related to the structure of the deal. Because he makes so much money and is under contract for so long ($1million/yr, 10 years) Vince is going to try and try to make money off of him. He could just send him home, but then he is paying all that money for nothing. If he keeps him on TV and pushed, he might luck himself into getting over and drawing money. Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted December 10, 2002 oh i see. well they could get him over in a babyface tag team if they wanted to but that's another thread...
Guest DragonflyKid Report post Posted December 10, 2002 When wrestlers negotiate their contracts(Or their agents do) they try to get as much as they can out of the deal, with both promotions tying to sign Big Show the WWE may have guaranteed him a title run to sweeten the deal. Big Show's current title reign has little to do with any clause in his contract though, Vince likes big guys and they needed a transitional champ so Big Show won by default.
