Definition of "carrying"

Recommended Posts

Guest gusmahler

What does it mean when a good worker "carries" someone else to a good match.  E.g., Bret Hart carried British Bulldog to a good match.

I know that it means a wrestler who usually produces bad matches actually has a good match with a good worker.  But what are the elements of carrying a match?  I realize it involves selling for the poorer worker, but what else.

The lesser worker has to have the proper attitude, which is why it ALWAYS takes two people to have a great match. You can't rape the willing.

I figured the term "to carry" someone meant that a worker who has outstanding skills helps his opponent, who has lesser skill, to have a good match.  For example, if you have a match with Benoit versus Maven.  Maven doesn't have the experience or the skill to put forth a stellar match.  Benoit, who has those skills, will work the match to make Maven look that much better and to make the match look good, thereby successfully "covering up" the weaknesses of Maven.

That is my understanding of someone carrying someone else in a match.

I always thought to carry someone through a match meant just that.

Wrestler A physically carries the person through the match, setting up the moves, and generally doing all the work.

To me, carrying is when one wrestler(s) leads and guides his opponent(s) through the match.  The wrestler doing the carrying is usually able to lay out the basic premise of the match and lead the opponent to the outcome.

Juvi "carried" Rey through their series of matches in 1994-1996 by laying out the match outline, letting Rey hit all of his moves but always reeling him back in when he got lost or too spotty.

Benoit did the same with Sasuke in their Super J Cup 1994 match.  Benoit was there to provide the substance while Sasuke was there for the flash.  Everytime Sasuke got too wild or too lost, Benoit reeled him back in to make sure the match didn't lose its flow.  Same goes for DK v TM which the Benoit/Sasuke match was basically a child of.

A lot of people confuse "carrying" with one good and one bad wrestler.  In all of the cases I listed above, both wrestlers were good to great yet one of them was still carried or guided through the match.

That's my definition though there are some more parts of carrying.

Tim

Sorry for the multiple posts!!!!!!!!!!

I think everyone has the right definition of the carry.  I think we are all saying the same thing.
