Guest Downhome Report post Posted December 12, 2002 My God, is this shit over Trent Lott not the biggest pile of horseshit ever? I'm not just talking about that, but it will be my focus for a second. The man made a comment, in joking, meaning it simply as a comliment to a 100 year old man (Mr. Thurmond, from right here in SC!). It was nothing more than that, PERIOD. On paper is looks horrible, but if you see the footage of his facial expresions, etc... it was obviously just in joking, in fun, and just trying to say something nice about the birthday boy. The man has apologized OVER AND OVER again about it, and explained just what I told you above, but noooooooo, it isn't enough, these crazy fuckers just have to push it over and over. Now, this brings me to my true point... ...do people have NOTHING ELSE to bitch over, besides something so petty like this? Do men like Jessie Jackson just sit back just waiting for the ANYTHING to come up, just to speak his mind about racism? Can people not just get over it fucking already!? Times have changed, a GREAT deal since "back in the day", but many seem to WANT to remain there. I can not fucking stand people who take ANYTHING they can get their hands on, just to use it to make someone look racist. In my view, THOSE types of people are just as bad, and it makes me sick. Also... ...I can't stand people being so sensitive over every little thing, it drives me crazy. You want to call me a white ass, southern redneck, rebel mother fucker? Then do it damnit, I don't give a piss what you say about me, and I most certainly wont view anything as racist that is said to me. To me, this whole "racist" thing would be a lot simplier if people just weren't so damn sensitive. I'm not talking about the people who kill others just because of their skin, and that type of extreme thing. I'm talking about stuff like, how we had the flag here in SC just as a showing of our historical past, and the damn NAACP got their panties in a wad, and still have it up their ass crack to this day for some reason. They asked it to be removed because it insulted them, we did it, they ask it to be moved again, again, do this, do that, blah blah blah. If a TV show doesn't have a black person in it, then all hell can break loose, if a movie company doesn't have a black producer, then they bitch, if we arrest black teens over something they will even sometimes claim it's just in the name of racism. Jesus, can EVERYONE not just move forward instead of living in the past. If we can't love each other and get along, can we at least pratice equal oppertunity hate, without bringing skin into the equation over EVERYTHING? In my eyes, we are all the same, period. I hate certain whites, blacks, hispanics, and whoever the hell else, I don't discriminate, and neither should anyone else. This may seem harsh, out of my ass, and simply retarded, but it's how I feel, and by the way... ...if any of this hurt YOUR feelings, and you now view me as a racist, I will not apologize, and I've got two words for ya... ...fuck you. Sincerely, ...Downhome...

Guest Downhome Report post Posted December 12, 2002 What did Trent Lott say? He said something along the lines, IN JOKING, that has Strom won the election back in '49 (I believe), that we wouldn't have had all of these problems we've had throughout the years. I'll get the actual quote if I can find it.
Guest Angle-plex Report post Posted December 12, 2002 I think he's fucked himself over by not appearing on any shows or making any quotes to clarify what he was saying.

"They were poorly chosen and insensitive." Nothing will please the critics, it's a political battle now. Why Jackson has his ass in such a bunch gets me though, I think he gets off on shit like this, he must always have something to bitch about, along with the entire NAACP. Guest Downhome Report post Posted December 12, 2002 By the way, he will be on Larry King Live in just a few moments, so get ready for that!
Guest Angle-plex Report post Posted December 12, 2002 OK. I didn't see anything he said. And yes, Jackson and the NAACP bitch about everything.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted December 12, 2002 We need people like Jesse Jackson, whether or not you like him. A lack of shit disturbers--regardless of their political agenda--causes a nation to get complacent. That said, everyone who complains is getting all riled up over very little. That said, fuck the stupid, racist, senile old fart that is Strom Thurmond. Fuck him fuck him fuck him fuck him. Also, fuck those cousin-fucking dipshits in South Carolina that re-elected him again and again and again, etc.

As for Thurmond, why do you hate him so much? He has long overturned any of his racial standpoints, and have done many great things for SC and the nation. Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 12, 2002 To actually understand the Trent Lott quote and put it in proper context, you'd have to know that Strom Thurmond ran for president on an anti-Integration platform--basically meaning that he was against black children attending school with white children and things like that. In light of that, I don't see how Lott's remarks could possibly not be considered racist. I'm not calling for his resignation or anything, but that was some seriously fucked up shit to say. Guest Incandenza Report post Posted December 12, 2002 What's wrong with bringing up the past? Those who do not learn from the past, yada yada yada.... Even though I think Jackson is an obnoxious publicity whore, we need him, just as we need conservative, obnoxious publicity whores. As for Strom, any overturning of past indiscretions is merely for show. As for further reasons for hate, it'd be better to let another SC resident to do it. I'm sure Kotzenjunge has plenty to say. I agree, yet I don't think Lott meant it. That doesn't excuse him saying it--even if it was in jest, then he was mocking an incontinent old man.
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 12, 2002 I personally have no problem with him harboring racist sentiment. That's his prerogative and as long as it doesn't interfere with him serving each sector of the American public without discrimination, he can feel that way all he wants. But to actually say something that could quite rightfully be perceived as racist in a public forum is beyond stupid. I remember there being a big uproar a few years ago about some CEO or something using the word "niggardly" in a speech. That word has no racist implications whatsoever, but it definitely sounds like a word that does. So, honestly, get a fucking thesaurus, man. People in positions like these should be intelligent enough to know what might offend some people.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted December 12, 2002 As a South Carolinan, I was appalled that we continued to elect exactly what Incandenza called him, an invalid, into office again and again. Until January of next year, we have the oldest senators in the nation, as Hollings is in his 80s now, and has another four years to serve still, at which point he'll try to be re-elected, no doubt. I'm quite proud of the Southern heritage and all, but not to the point where I'd endorse a candidate running against integration and calling himself a "Dixiecrat." To hear someone say that his election would have prevented a lot of trouble, implying that the Civil Rights movement was something that was a bother to go through is absolutely deplorable, and there's no way in hell there wasn't a tiny fragment of personal feeling behind that statement. Guest Incandenza Report post Posted December 12, 2002 OMG!!!!!!!!11 DOUBLE POST~! Oh, having only read Mr. Lott's comments, I wasn't able to judge the way he delivered him. Now that I've actually seen him say it, allow me to retract my earlier statement. I didn't sense much mirth or levity in his voice. Fuck Trent Lott AND fuck Strom Thurmond. Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted December 12, 2002 Thurmond, according to the story, told the gathering of 1,000 people that the country "cannot stand four more years of [President] Jimmy Carter. . . . We've got to balance the budget. Jimmy Carter won't do it, but Ronald Reagan will do it." There's something ironic in that quote in there somewhere. Just can't quite put my finger on it. Anyway, clearly that was a fucking stupid thing for a politician to say, and I feel no sympathy for Lott over it. I didn't give him the benefit of the doubt before, but I'm even less inclined to now after that article Inc posted. It's an amazing thing to say, and no matter what he intended or how he apologizes, he deserves to get flak over it.
Guest Gathering Moss Report post Posted December 12, 2002 The fact that Lott made almost the exact same statement once before makes me doubt the sincerity of his apology. The only thing he's sorry for is the fact that he said it out loud. Oh, and fuck you Strom Thurmond.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted December 12, 2002 To actually understand the Trent Lott quote and put it in proper context, you'd have to know that Strom Thurmond ran for president on an anti-Integration platform--basically meaning that he was against black children attending school with white children and things like that. That's true, but it also doesn't indicate that's what Lott meant by his remarks. We've had a lot of problems since 1948 that haven't had anything to do with race. I'm not trying to absolve Lott here: what he said was insensitive at best and downright scummy at worst. But it's also possible he wasn't trying to be a closet racist, just because Thurmond used to be an unabashed one.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted December 12, 2002 As a fellow South Carolinian myself (l live about 45 mins away from Kotz's area), I just want to say that not all of us really give a damn about it either way. And nto just people my age but adults too. All I think is that Thurmond needs to retire because his time has passed now. He's on the verge of doing just that so in the end it's a bunch of bitching about nothing as far as he is concerned. As for Lott, I don't care. I do not care one way or the other. Matter of fact, I only vaguely recall who the hell the guy is. It's lip service, a bunch of talk between two older men. There are bigger f'ing issues in the world to focus on than what one old man said to one older man in passing. Yep, SP's gonna break it out again. Last time for a long time, though, barring something outrageous: Who gives a flying fuck. There, that's my "F" allotment for the rest of the year.
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 12, 2002 But he said it in the context of a speech and not to Thurmond in passing. Totally different things.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted December 12, 2002 Was it directed at Thurmond?
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted December 12, 2002 It was a speech though. And as far as the 1980 remark goes, presumably a prepared one. You can say there are bigger problems than almost anything, but that doesn't mean that the majority leader of the Senate saying something like that isn't a big deal. Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 12, 2002 Yes, it was. In the context of a speech at Thurmond's 195th birthday bash.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted December 12, 2002 Indeed. Well that does change the rules somewhat. While intended as a small scale comment in passing he was an idiot with his execution of it. In that, it was a poor decision on his part and in a way he has earned the beating on his public image at the moment.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted December 12, 2002 Something about a 195th Birthday Bash struck me as absolutely hilarious.

Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 13, 2002 Who the hell are the Democrats to say anything. The people in Congress who lobbied against the Civil Rights Act were Democrats like Al Gore's Father, and let's not forget Mr.KKK Robert Byrd who got away with saying "White Niggers".
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted December 13, 2002 I'm not sure I understand your point. Are you suggesting that because Democrats in the 1960's opposed civil rights, that everyone should let Trent Lott's comments, which, even according to prominent republican such as the president, are "offensive and wrong," slide today?
