Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted December 12, 2002 DES MOINES, Iowa -- J.J. Sola had a career-high 36 points and Drake scored on a succession of layups and dunks while setting several school records in beating Division III Grinnell 162-110 Wednesday night. Grinnell (4-2), which was averaging 140 points a game, plays a frenetic style that gives up baskets for a chance to score at the other end. Drake (4-4) took advantage, beating the Grinnell press time after time for easy shots. Drake's old record had been 130 points against Missouri-Kansas City in 1971. The Bulldogs also rang up the most points ever by a Missouri Valley Conference team, topping the 141 that Tulsa scored against Prairie View in 1995. The 162 points were the most by a Division I team this season. Western Carolina scored 119 against Toccoa Falls Institute on Nov. 23. The Division I record is 186 by Loyola Marymount, which played a style that Grinnell mimics, against U.S. International on Jan. 5, 1991. Drake also set school records for points in a half (89 in the second), free throws (41) and assists (35). The Bulldogs shot 78.6 percent in the second half, when they made 21 of their first 25 shots, and 68.2 percent (60-of-88) for the game. In leading 73-51 at halftime, Drake scored more points than it had in all but one of its previous games. Grinnell, whose goal is to take 100 shots, put up 102, making 38 for 37.3 percent. The Pioneers were 23-of-73 from 3-point range. Drake made one 3 and finished 41-of-50 on free throws. The Bulldogs outrebounded Grinnell 67-35, Greg Danielson grabbing 15 and Sola 10. Freshman Quantel Murphy made all 10 of his shots and scored 25 points for Drake, including several crowd-pleasing dunks. His two-handed, double-pump reverse slam gave Drake its 100th point -- with 15:17 left -- and he drew the biggest roar of the night when he reached with one hand to grab David Newman's lob pass and slammed it through while being fouled. Danielson also scored 25 points, while Luke McDonald and Sean Tracy scored 16 apiece. McDonald make Drake's only 3-pointer, extending his nation-leading streak to 65 games with at least one 3. Ken Heiser led Grinnell with 22 points. Hmm..I think Grinnell needs a new gameplan..
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 12, 2002 Not if there Division III. More teams especially NBA need to pay a more up tempo style.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted December 12, 2002 The NBA won't until one of their fast-paced teams (Sacramento or Dallas) wins a championship. Until then, we'll watch the ball being passed around for 23 seconds and then a long shot at 24.

Hell the Celtics who were a blue collar type team could score points. It's just a shame NBA coaches can't let the players play a little and not involve themselves on every aspect of a teams offense. It's possible. Unfortunately we have the copycat style of coaches. Since the Bulls won six titles and the Lakers three with a low-tempo offense, everyone is copying that. That's why a hi-tempo team needs to win...more teams will follow suit.
