Debug mode

can someone tell me what exactly a Debug mode is? I've heard the term but I have no clue as to what it means

Its a hack which lets you tamper with the game.

A developer would run the debug mode when they wanted to tweak things here and there and fix bugs. It's used near the end of the development cycle during the debugging process. In regards to the debug mode we see in the games we play, that is basically the sort of options the developers had. Change gameplay parameters like infinite lives, spawn certain characters, etc. In this sense, think of it as a cheats menu.

Using a cheat code, may also grant you access to "Debug Mode". I've seen several of the older Sonic games with it....

Thanks for the info. I saw the mode listed as a cheat code for Virtual Chess 64 and I was clueless on what it meant.

Also, I believe almost every arcade game machine has one as well, since the debug menu is where the arcade owner can indicate how many coins equates one credit, how many credits it takes to play the game, etc.
