Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted December 15, 2002 Which franchise relocations do you feel have been beneficial or detrimental? Quebec Nordiques-->Colorado Avalanche: good, though I wish both teams could exist in the form of Quebec getting an expansion a la Cleveland post-Ravens. Winnipeg Jets-->Phoenix Coyotes: bad, no upside to this one. Equally inferior arena, more apathetic market. Move them back. Carolina Hurricanes-->Hartford Whalers: also a bad one. Move them back too. Charlotte--> New Orleans Hornets: unlike hockey, basketball is not as regional, and the Hornets should do okay in the bayou just as the Jazz did before moving to Mormon-Land. Charlotte will ostensibly get #30 anyway, so it's a good move. Vancouver-->Memphis Grizzlies: I never noticed any protesting up in Vancouver, so let's call it a good move. However this leaves Toronto as the only Canadian basketball team, and they could move as well. Any L.A. team in the NFL-->anywhere else: good. Houston Oilers-->Tennessee Titans: They finally made a good run for the title in Nashville, and the Texans have fileld the void, so it's a good move. Though the Texans logo sucks. eh. Baltimore-->Indianamanalopolis Colts: done in a crappy way, no long-term effects really. Brooklyn-->L.A. Dodgers: nothing left to say.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted December 15, 2002 The Raptors are extremely popular in Toronto so I don't see them moving
Guest Kingpk Report post Posted December 15, 2002 I like the Texans logo. Lakers from Minneapolis to Los Angeles was good. Any professional team that goes to Florida is a bad move (save for the football teams).
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted December 15, 2002 Beneficial: St Louis Browns move to Baltimore and become the Orioles. Detrimental: Baltimore to Indianapolis. Brooklyn to Los Angeles. Both left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted December 15, 2002 one thing that I did notice is that alot of sports teams from several different leagues move South from Canada to USA. I am not sure what the motive is but it must have something to do with the tax laws and money saving incentives that USA cities put up while Canadian cities seem to refuse to pay for the stadium cost. I notice several Hockey teams move south, even though it is the Canadian national sport, which I see as questionable, its like moving MLB teams to Puerto Rico, its crazy but cost effective. And the recent NBA move of the Grizzlies from Vancouver to Memphis, could be a good thing if the team won more often. I agree with the Florida moves, why are there Hockey teams in Florida? It does not snow there and if it does it is on a Panhandle region, nowhere close to Tampa or Miami!
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted December 15, 2002 Obviously Good Moves Cleveland Browns to Baltimore St. Louis Browns to Baltimore Baltimore Orioles to New York (became the Yankees believe it or not..) Bad Moves? Baltimore Colt to Indy Baltimore Bullets to Washington Sorry for being a bit biased here I suppose..

There are so many retired or transplanted Canadians in Miami that the Maple Leafs and Canadiens are de facto home teams against the Panthers.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted December 15, 2002 Brooklyn-->L.A. Dodgers: nothing left to say. That was a good move. As was the Giants moving to San Francisco. No one was showing up for the games in New York and Brooklyn.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted December 15, 2002 so the Snowbirds account for the Hockey teams then, that makes sense. But 2 Hockey teams in the state, damn.
Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted December 15, 2002 so the Snowbirds account for the Hockey teams then, that makes sense. But 2 Hockey teams in the state, damn. Yep. Crazy. I'd like to see nine out of 30 Canadian teams in a perfect world. Here's my fantasy alignment that I used for an NHL simulation game: CLARENCE CAMPBELL JENNINGS: Vancouver Canucks, Seattle Sabres, San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, Dallas Renegades (Mighty Ducks) SMYTHE: Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues NORRIS: Minnesota North Stars(Stars and Wild merge), Chicago Blackhawks Detroit Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins PRINCE OF WALES ADAMS: Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Halifax Signals (Nashville Predators), Quebec Nordiques (expansion team), Ottawa Senators PATRICK: New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Boston Bruins, Hartford Whalers (Carolina Hurricanes) ROSS: New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning, Atlanta Thrashers, Florida Panthers I think Halifax coudl sneak by with an NHL franchise: they could cover Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI, which is about 1.85 million. Guest razazteca Report post Posted December 15, 2002 how do you feel about the rumors of the Expos going to Puerto Rico or becoming the next Washington Sentors?
Guest CanadianChris Report post Posted December 15, 2002 I think Halifax coudl sneak by with an NHL franchise: they could cover Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI, which is about 1.85 million. There's no way. First of all, it's five or six hours to Halifax from a lot of that region (Moncton and Charlottetown, for example). Second, the Maritimes is one of the poorest regions in North America...there's no way there are enough people in that area with enough money to watch NHL games on a regular basis. Halifax is a pipe dream.
