just got back from seeing it, and i thought it was GREAT. it took about an hour & a half for me to get into, but once i bought into the style & the characters it was incredible. totally different from scorsese's known style, made exactly like a mainstream movie would be made, but it's easily the best example of mainstream moviemaking i've seen in years. THAT is how a sweeping american epic should be made.

and when did diaz's accent falter? daniel-day lewis had some weak points & dicaprio went in and out of his (especially during the narration), but i never heard diaz slip.

You're kidding. I thought Lewis' accent was flawless (same with Jim Broadbent's), while Diaz spoke with an Irish lilt for only about a fourth of her screen time.

Also, it's strange that it took you so long to get into the film. I'd argue that the first hour-and-a-half was the strongest. It faltered a bit when they got into the whole election stuff; I felt the film was tackling more than it could handle. Still, the slightly weaker last half wasn't enough to make the film any less terrific.

it just took me a while to warm up to the film's style. all films that are shot in that "short attention span" modern style (lots of flashy camera movements, rapid-fire editing, really really really short takes) initially irritate me (e.g., i didn't enjoy 'run lola run' at all for the first 20 minutes). and 'gangs' was actually shot in a kind of bland modern way, not a distinctive 'goodfellas'-type way.

plus the story didn't really kick in for a while, the first hour & a half was mostly exposition. there was nothing for me to attach myself to emotionally, so i just sat back and thought "stop moving the camera like that, stop cutting away so fast." the story didn't really get a hold of me until the scene in the brothel after the assassination attempt on bill. once it got going, i thought it just kept getting better & better up to the end (which is extremely rare), and my jaw dropped open during the montage of the riots. that montage was beautiful.

I was indifferent to the first half of the movie too, but loved the second half. At just about the same moment as it did for GTD. My only complaint is that Cameron Diaz was utterly superfluous. I think they only wrote her in to get a woman in the film. I liked everything else, though Leo had some shaky moments. Daniel Day Lewis was fucking Awesome. The best performance I've seen by any actor in a long time. I liked all the other stuff about the draft and the riots all that.

Oh...my...GOD!!! That movie...the things and the stuff...Best. Movie. All Year.

I'd be surprised if Daniel Day-Lewis DOESN'T get either best actor or best supporting actor.

And what was there to be indifferent about? The movie was awesome all the way through.

in retrospect, diaz was totally superfluous, but everything else was so well done i didn't care. and the second-to-last shot (the one with the candles) actually brought me to tears. thinking about the movie makes me want to do a jig and proclaim the joys of having another great scorsese movie.

That movie makes me want to kiss Daniel Day Lewis' feet for coming out of retirement and blessing us with such a great performance. Seriously. I will kiss his feet if I ever get the chance.

indifferent is the wrong word, I guess. I liked the first half of the movie. I thought it was good. But the second half blew me away, and was what left me feeling that it was a great movie.
