If you could set up a card, including stars from any era, what would be your idel PPV? What gimmick matches would you love to see on it? Would you make it an international card? Would you be more apt to make it current stars VS. current stars, or would you mix and match it with current stars, past stars, indy stars, and international stars?

 

Anyhow, I just thought this could be a rather interesting topic, and it would help us actually learn more about each other and our likes/dislikes.

 

Let's make it maybe, well, an 8-12 match card. :-)

I don't think that I can really answer the question, though the PPV would include: Steve Corino, Vader, Cactus Jack & Raven. Since you said "any ERA" I don't see why the IV Horseman can't be running around, along with "The Widowmaker" Barry Windom.

I can honestly say that I see nothing wrong with that line-up at all! The clincher for me is Benoit Vs. Dynamite 2/3 Falls match, as that is a dream match to end all dream matches for me!

 

I am STILL in search of a video tape of the Benoit Vs. Dynamite matches that I KNOW are out there somewhere, I just can't find them :-(. There weren't many, and they were in the very early '90's, but I'd still love to see some of them, ANY of them, lol.

Those Benoit/Dynamite matches are probably not that great. Dynamite was pretty limited due to injury and Benoit was really young. You oughta ask around for em. I'd still like to see one.

This is a mix of the giants of yesteryear and of today.  I mixed up the tag matches so I could get fresh pairings, but all the singles matches are based on **** to ***** matches these wrestlers have put together before.

logic behind card...

 

1. Super Delfin(1996) v Misterio(1995) v Tony Marmaluke v Tajiri(2000)... every good show needs a fast heated opener. Tajiri in 2000 was so over his heat was nuclear. Misterio was the same deal in ECW. Tony Marmaluke provides the comedy and monster bumps while Delfin provides fans with a lighthearted solid story.

 

2. Lance Storm(1997) v Jericho(1998): battle of the Thrillseekers... angles between up and comers belong in the lower cards. The story here is that Lance who is a young ECW babyface is challenging WCW's Ayatolla of Rock'nRolla and wants to beat some of Stu Hart's discipline back into Jericho...

 

3. Hardy Boyz(1999) v Eliminators(1997): Tables Ladders and Chairs... believe it or not but the Eliminators were first in this country to work matches exclusively with TLC. The Hardys did not pioneer the match form but they did perfect it. This match is all about bragging rights. Who wouldn't wanna see Jeff Hardy take Total Elimination?

 

4. Liger(1990) v Hayabusa(1999)... I know this match happened once but Hayabusa had yet to come into his own. Liger in his young prime looks to upset the rising star Hayabusa for bragging rights over who's puro company rules whose...

 

5. Benoit(1994) v Dynamite Kid(1984): 2 out of 3 falls... it's like looking in a mirror!

 

6. DDP(1998) v Rob Van Dam(1999)... the hardest working man in wrestling takes on Mr Pay per view. DDP carries RVD while RVD takes things athletically to Space Mountain. The two would compliment eachother...

 

7. Steve Austin(1997) v Ric Flair(1989): No Disqualifications... easily the wildest, bloodiest brawl ever. Seeing Flair get beat up by Austin would be a hoot. The No DQ tag would just encourage Flair to try everything!

 

8. HBK(1996) v Bill Goldberg(1999): most fun carry job ever... yeah okay Bill Goldberg sucks but... picture this. Taking out big men is one of Michael's hallmarks but even Shawn has never faced a monster like Goldberg. Goldberg is faster, stronger, younger, and more intense than any opponent Shawn has ever had. Sweet Chin Music or the Spear? Shawn would carry Bill but the fans would be treated to something special. In my mind Goldberg is the one HBK was born to carry!

i'll take a different thread.  it isnt match quality which makes the perfect ppv for me, its the story leading up to and into the match.  give me a ppv where all the matches came about logically and have backstories along with a reasonable level of wrestling and i will take it over any of the above supercards.

I'll agree to disagree because all of the guys I have mentioned can tell their story in the ring. with the exception of Steamboat, they can all play the heel role effectively, as well as being able to gather face heat.

im not only talking about the story in the ring though.  for me, the lead-up to the match is just as important as the match itself.  eg. i would probably consider a reasonably poor match to blow off a really hot fued superior to a **** or so match which was cobbled together the week before the ppv.  telling a story in the ring is good, as long as there is a story there to tell.

opening match: 94 owen hart v. 89 ricky steamboat.  good, fast-paced wrestling clinic with plenty of reversals & quick near-falls.  steamboat wins clean with some kind of pinning reversal.  15 minutes or so, at least ****1/2.  (probably would be a better match if it was 2/3 falls or 30 minute iron man, but you can't have a long match like that for an opener.)

 

mid-90s chris benoit v. mid-90s toshiaki kawada.  straight-up japanese-style match that brings the psychology & the stiffness.  i have no idea who should win, so 30 minute draw.  ****1/2 to *****, depending on how much each guy is feeling it.

 

97 heel bret hart v. 2001 face kurt angle.  the america/canada angle would be PERFECT here.  i know angle's face turn fell flat, but so far his peak as a wrestler has been summer 2001 when he was a face.  kurt angle's pure athleticism & hitman's ability to work a match should be able to put together an epic summerslam 1992/2001 match, with kurt coming back from everything bret throws at him (like working the leg & exposing the turnbuckle) & everybody kicking out of (or reaching the ropes on) finishers.  end comes when bret runs into an exposed turnbuckle & angle follows it up with the moonsalt.  just under 30 minutes, ****3/4-*****.

 

96 shawn michaels v. 2000 triple h, ladder match.  trips worked well with everybody, as did michaels, & both worked GREAT with their buddies.  i have no idea how the hell this match would end, but i'm sure they'd find some creative way, with trips winning cleanly (since shawn had no problem putting his buddies over & there was some kind of weird rule in 2000 that trips had to go over clean on anybody who was shorter than him).  20 minutes, about *****.

 

97 kenta kobashi & mitsuhara misawa v. 89-90 steiner brothers.  i know kobashi & misawa weren't on the same team by 97, but they both hit their peak by then.  these 4 might very well kill each other, having 3 of wrestling's most dangerous offensive move sets in the same ring.  with the added stiffness everybody brings & kobashi and misawa's complete inability to not kick ass while in the same ring, there's no way this could be under *****.  epic, all-japan style 40-minute battle with the steiners winning after 2 screwdrivers on kobashi.

 

main event: 89 ric flair v. 97 steve austin, "i quit" match.  i don't even need to explain this one.  austin does the whole match without any interest in making flair say "i quit," just wanting to beat the living shit out of him.  flair works the bad leg (DUH), but austin gets the advantage.  he eventually stuns the ref for continuing to ask flair if he quits, cause he just wants to kill him.  he stuns flair into oblivion, says "i quit" into the mic, & leaves flair in the middle of the ring, half dead.

97 kenta kobashi & mitsuhara misawa v. 89-90 steiner brothers.  i know kobashi & misawa weren't on the same team by 97, but they both hit their peak by then.  

Definitely agree with Misawa peaking in 1997, but not Kobashi.

 

Kobashi was one of these once in a lifetime guys, who at age 26 in 1993, had a better year in the ring than anybody else in history, including Flair (Meltzer admitted that while Kobashi didn't have the same schedule that Flair did in the 80's, Kobashi at his peak was actually better).

 

According to Meltzer's star ratings, in 1993, Kobashi had 19 matches that were ****+, with five of them being *****.  Some people never have one ***** match in their whole careers, let alone five in one year.  He also had three matches that were rated ****3/4 that year, and four that were rated ****1/2.

 

Suffice to say, I have never seen a better wrestler in my life than Kobashi in 1993
