Republicans Breathe Easy

From MSNBC.com:

WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 —  Former Vice President Al Gore has decided not to run for president in 2004, a senior Gore adviser said Sunday. Gore planned to make the announcement on CBS “60 Minutes,” the adviser said. Gore would have been the likely front-runner in the Democratic field, even though many party activists have said privately they hoped he wouldn’t run.

AFTER GRADUALLY re-entering politics over the last year, the Democrats’ 2000 nominee campaigned for selected candidates around the country this year, then spent the last month promoting a book on the family that he wrote with wife Tipper and making an extensive round of media appearances, including “Saturday Night Live” this weekend.

Gore’s decision opens up the 2004 presidential field for Democrats. Vermont Gov. Howard Dean is running and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry has formed an exploratory committee and will announce his decision after the new year. Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, Gore’s running mate in 2000, has said he is interested in running.

DASCHLE, GEPHARDT WEIGH BID

Also considering a bid for the White House are Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle, Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt and North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.

Since re-entering the public arena, Gore has been talking about his views on issues from Iraq to health care to the economy and sending mixed signals on whether he planned to run.

Some aides said the 54-year-old Gore would feel differently from day to day about the decision. He had said he planned to deliberate through the holidays and announce a decision after Christmas.

But Gore finished a round of media appearances Saturday night and decided to go ahead with the announcement. Aides did not immediately say why he changed his timetable.

Man, Gore was the one guy I saw as being able to rally the Democrats to regain the losses of the midterms and actually challenge what is an even more assured Bush re-election now.

Not really. Gore pissed off voters being on tv every night after the 2000 election whining about it.

He would've gone down easily to Bush this time around.

Can you think of a better challenger? After all, he did virtually disappear for a year after all the election controversy ended.

That's too bad I was looking forward to having Gore run again. On the positive side, this means there is NO excuse for the press and politicians to turn the 2004 election into a referendum on the 2000 one.

I would have to bet that either Kerry or Edwards wins the nomination now.

Thank goodness Gore is not running, however it would be nice to see Gore turn more Dems off and have them vote with the Green Party. I am not so sure if Bush will be such a shoe-in as some people think. Hell, everyone thought Gore would easily win in 2000 after such a successful tenure under Clinton. Remember, people's opinions CHANGE ABOUT WAR once we actually go to war. Everyone can sing and dance about how it is so great that we are going to bomb baghdad, but once we start, and it doesn't end, and then Bush keeps wanting to press forward with more and more war, the tide may turn. The biggest reason Bush and co. are having such success right now, is because in the mid-term elections you were either voting for republicans or the other group that helped the republicans EVERYTHING they wanted.

I don't mind this at all. I seriously doubt Gore would've won anyway. He was a good Vice President I suppose but I could never see him as Mr. Big Shot.

Then again, what do I know, I "throw my votes away" on the Green Party anyway :P

I'm glad mr. nature isn't running. I just hope and pray daschle does not run because I do not think bush will be re-elected and daschle is the biggest jackass I have ever seen. Aside from clinton of course.

Of course, if he didn't deamnd recounts, the party would turn ugly on him and call him a coward...

Gore would've won the Democratic nomination easily, but he didn't have a shot in the general election. Republicans were rubbing their hands in anticipation of facing Gore this time around. This is good news for Democrats.

Right know it doesn't matter. Things can change but the Dems are losing no matter who they run.

Jobber is right in one sense, but Gore was more than willing to file frivilous lawsuits, and not do the clean election job.

I guess you're right, as long as you ignore the Supreme Court run-in.

... which prevented the Florida Supreme Court from changing the rules of the match on the fly. It was threatening to turn into Austin-Dude Love for a while there.

I dont think I can take 6 more years of this.

Right, because as long as a Republican is President your tattered shoes will never become diamond shoes?

Boy, that election WAS a ****3/4 affair, wasn't it? Of course, to really apply that to the 2000 election, you need to change the alignments of the participants.

Bush = Austin (heel)

Gore = Dude Love (face)

Florida Supreme Court = Patterson, Brisco, and McMahon (except in a good, law-abiding way)

Supreme Court = Undertaker (as the evil bastard)

Republican and Democratic lawyers = sell-out Milwaukee crowd

And the wrong guy goes over. Who booked this crap?

I still can't figure out the polls right now. It looks like everything is about to crumble at this point, what with the economy, the deficit about to end up in a lot worse shape, war on terrorism not getting it's objective, and Saddam still in power. But he's still immesely popular.

Gore didn't have a shot, as it would have seemed like last election all over.

Bear in mind that Gore's assinine statement about the media being controlled by Republicans just shot his support there. Nevermind a democractic bias in the media, but the fact that he was basically saying to those Dems in media that they were being controlled by Republicans and you get some seriously pissed off voters.

Way to go, Al. Try running with a mannequin head as your running mate next time.

For christ sake, I need a democrat in the White House or have Republicans do something crazy like, um, I don't know, at least acknowledge that the economy SUCKS right now and that HUGE numbers of peoples are without jobs.

If I watch ONE more fucking top ranking Republican say that our economy is in a tiny lag, I will vomit. We are have a horrible couple of years now and I don't care who is the president or who gets elected... I just need someone to pretend to care.

Tainted point of view. Isn't it wonderful how a liberal will put a liberal (gore) as the face. :(

Yes Rob, you're the one to tell others they have a tainted point of view. And yes, it is wonderful that I made Gore the face.

Ripper, that's just public relations. If a government says "Well, the economy is going down and we're hitting the panic button", that would just make the situation worse. Put a happy face on things and try to fix them.

Beyond that, the economy never has worked on a steady climb. There are ups and downs and it's a down right now...

Yeah those Democrats really care about the economy too.

What with blocking tax cuts and all which are proven to help in the long run.

Exactly, the competition geared U.S economy is prone to MANY ups and downs. Also take into the fact that most of the stuff that fuels our economy is pure crap that we don't need. God forbid we'd go a few years where people actually saved their money for something more worthwhile. There's nothing wrong with the economy, food and water is still readily available and that's what REALLY matters.

I'd just like to point out that a statement like this is cause for contentment in the third world, not in America. If this is the explaining-away that most of the Republican think tank is going to make, there are some serious problems.
