Guest evilhomer Report post Posted December 20, 2002 A little bit about myself to start. I'm just a basic computer user, still running windows 95 on my computer. I don't do any advanced programming or anything, just get the programs and run them. I'm perfectly happy with '95, it doesn't crash too much and the navigation is fine, but with all the crap that's been accumulated, the computer runs slow as hell, and I've got no hard drive space left. I've defragged and cleaned out whatever shit I can, but that only helps so much. So I'm going over my options 1. Save my important stuff, wipe the hard drive and start from scratch but with a 3 gig memory, I'd quickly run into the same problem. 2. Upgrade my current one with a new hard drive, ram, etc. 3. Say fuck it and get a new one. Option 3 is the easiest, but I'm a little cautious of that number one because of all the pre-loaded crap the dealer throws on, it's easy to get rid of, but I don't want the trouble, and number two because all new computers right now are coming with Windows XP which I have heard horrible reviews of. I can of course just format the drive and install my old windows 95, but with the XP tacking $100 or more onto the cost of a new one, I don't want to throw it away like that. So for a basic user like me, what are the problems and bad points of XP?
Guest Razor Roman Report post Posted December 20, 2002 I haven't notice too many problems with XP, myself. But I don't run it day-to-day. I use Win2k, but my fiancee and her family use XP and it was great for them because all the kids can keep their documents seperate and protected, and the little ones can be easily kept from installing and uninstalling, and deleting stuff. Win2k/XP seem to be really stable and good at protecting applications. If one crashes, they don't all crash. Very few times has anyone I know running XP had their computers become inoperable. It happens once in a while, but not nearly as much as Win9x. If you're getting a new computer, go with XP. If you're worried about the pre-loaded crap, borrow an XP CD from a friend, and reinstall off of that, just use the XP Key that came with your new computer. It should auto detect your hardware just fine.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted December 20, 2002 I have XP and I think it's the coolest version of Windows ever. It has never crashed and when other programs crash while XP is running, it doesn't lock up the whole computer like happened with older Windows versions. It's VERY simple to use. Once you learn the few things that have been changed it's like using one of those little kid toy computers it's so easy. Installing hardware is a 5 second process now. You don't have to fool with drivers or anything. You just plug it in, XP detects it and installs it for you automatically. A lot of people complain about it but 99% of them are the people think find it "cool" to bash every single thing Microsoft does. They have the same mentality as the people that think a band that signs with a label is a sell out. I've had the thing for a year and I have not had a single problem with it. I've had problems with my computer but none were because of XP and the problems I did have were easier to correct BECAUSE of XP. I'd give some bad points if I know of any but I don't. I can't think of one.
Guest Eagan469 Report post Posted December 20, 2002 I have a 400 MHZ Celeron, and I installed Windows XP about a month ago after using Windows 98 SE for 3 years. Here's what I can tell you: It's only slower than 98 SE if YOU DO NOT turn off system restore and all the other background programs. Turn them all off, along with the start menu animations, and it's just as fast as 98 SE. Classic mode all the way for older systems. I'm addicted to Internet Checkers It's free via KaZaA I wouldn't install it over 95. Invest in a new $600-700 PC. I've wanted to, but I'm stretching the life out of this one, so whatever. Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted December 22, 2002 Ah. Well lets see. The computer I bought (Compaq Presario 5006, 850 mhz Amd Duron, 128 mb RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, CD-RW and DVD drive, TNT 2 Video Card) had Windows ME on it. Now, I had liked Windows 98 on my old computer, however, Windows ME IS FLAT OUT GHEY..My BRAND NEW COMPUTER (err. refurbished..hmm..) crashed 2 days after I took it out of the box because of some sort of Win ME bug crap or something. I managed to download the patches for it off the Microsoft site, but WIN ME Still crashed just about once a day AND ran slower than 98 did on my old Gateway thats almost 5 years old. Now, when I heard about how XP was supposed to be more reliable and faster I said, "yeah right" but then I figured, what the heck have I got to lose. So I got my parents to buy the $99 upgrade version at Staples (and with that they got me a relatively OK Fuji Fine Pix 1300 digital camera, media card, case and paper for free after some mail in rebates..) for Christmas last year..After about a 2 1/2 hour late night install session with virtually no problems at all (other than my Preinstalled Roxio Easy CD Creator 4 not working and a few other minor bugs) I am quite pleased to say that my one crash happy computer has only crashed ONE TIME in almost the last year. So obviously, WIN ME IS FLAT OUT GHEY and I am quite happy that I upgraded to XP. Thats my story. I would say upgrade in a freakin heartbeat if you have WIN ME...and I would probably still upgrade to XP if I had Win 98.

Well one of the reasons that your computer crashed was because you bought a Compaq, but that is just my opinion.

Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted January 4, 2003 Shouldn't installing WinME onto a Compaq make your house implode from the sheer concentration of so much suckitude in one small space? Oh, and yeah - Windows XP is an excellent "middle-of-the-road" OS for users who like productivity and gaming with NT-esque stability. It gets my recommendation. Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted January 5, 2003 Depends on your processor. I have XP on a P3 600 and an Athlon 500 with little problem. I've even heard that it runs on a Celery 333. However, you better not be a gamer or anything or you'll be crying your eyes out over how slow it is. Perfectly fine for email/internet/word processing though. I can't give enough blowjobs to XP. It's my favorite OS ever. Some things are a little annoying (like Windows Messanger), but they finally got around to fixing that stuff with Service Pack. Also, CompUSA was selling boxed copies of XP Upgrade for $80 ($20 discount), but that may have expired today.
