Worst draft picks

Recommended Posts

Guest Redhawk

I was looking at some old NBA and NFL drafts, and it's astonishing how many horrible picks have been made over the years. Of course we all know about the Blazers picking Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan and of 15-20 teams passing on Randy Moss. But look at THESE picks:

NBA

========

--In 1992 the Hawks picked Adam Keefe ahead of Latrell Sprewell.

--In 1993 the Sacramento Kings passed on Nick Van Exel TWICE, picking Bobby Hurley and Evers Burns.

--In 1994 the 76ers picked Sharone Wright over Brian Grant, Eddie Jones, and Jalen Rose, among others.

--In 1995 the Blazers picked Shawn Respert over Michael Finley and then the Pistons picked Randolph Childress over Finley. In that same draft, the Warriors picked Joe Smith over Kevin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess.

--In 1996 the Clippers picked Lorenzen Wright over Kobe Bryant. In that same draft, the Cavaliers picked Vitaly Potapenko over Jermaine O'Neal.

--In 1998 the Mavericks picked Robert "Tractor" Traylor over Paul Pierce.

--In 1999 the Cavs picked Trajan Langdon over Ron Artest.

--In 2001, the Celtics had THREE picks in the top 21. With those picks, they got Joe Johnson, Kedrick Brown and Joe Forte; passing up the likes of Tony Parker, Jamaal Tinsley, Richard Jefferson and Gilbert Arenas.

NFL

========

--In 1988 the Cardinals picked RB Tony Jeffrey over Thurman Thomas

--In 1993 TWELVE defensive lineman -- inlcuding Eric Curry, Dan Williams, Leonard Renfro, Todd Kelly and Coleman Rudolph -- are chosen before the Giants take a defensive end out of Texas Southern named...Michael Strahan.

--The next year, though, the Giants use the No. 24 pick to get Thomas Lewis, a WR. In the next round, the Rams take Isaac Bruce.

--In 1995 the Patriots grab Curtis Martin with the 74th pick, after RBs Ki-Jana Carter, Tyrone Wheatley, Napolean Kaufman, Rashaan Salaam, Ray Zellars, Sherman Williams and Terrell Fletcher have been taken.

--In 1996 the Jaguars use the No. 2 pick in LB Kevin Hardy, leaving Ray Lewis on the board. In that same draft, the Rams pick Lawrence Phillips over Eddie George.

--In 1997 the Falcons pick RB Byron Hanspard over Corey Dillon.

--In 1999 the Browns use their No. 1 pick on QB Tim Couch, passing on QBs Donovan McNabb, Daunte Culpepper. The Bengals also pass on Culpepper, taking Akili Smith.

--In 2000 the Browns AGAIN have the No.1 pick, but take Courtney Brown over LaVar Arrington.

WWE

==========

--In 2002, Vince McMahon used a Top 10 pick to take Mark Henry.

The Knicks passing up Artest for Weis was pretty bad.

The Nets picking Rex Walters, Yinka Dare AND Ed O'Bannon never ceases to amaze me.

If you think about it, the Saints Trading all of their Draft picks for like 2 years to the Redskins for Ricky Williams was a pretty bad deal considering he's no longer with the Saints and the Redskins were able to get Lavar Arrington and Chris Samuels that year I believe..

Everybody except Mike Ditka knew that was a horrible deal from the moment it was made.

Not all of the original list should be considered bad DRAFT PICKS.

There is a difference between hindsight and bad draft picks. Hindsight doesn't mean a draft choice was a bad pick when it was made.

NBA

Joe Smith was one of the top college players at the time of the draft and drafting him was not a bad pick.

Trajan Langdon was also one of the top college players at draft time and can't really be considered a bad draft pick.

NFL

There were 5 top QB prospects in 1999 and other then Akili Smith it's hard to say that a team made a bad pick when there was 5 top prospects. McNabb had just as many doubters that Vick had.

Courtney Brown & LaVar Arrington were rated very close to each other which made choosing between them tough. So i don't see how either could be considered a bad draft pick.

In the 1997 draft, Ronde Barber was picked in the third round with such names as Chris Canty and Kevin Abrams picked above him.

Reading old drafts always fascinates and depresses me. I always wonder how they make such huge mistakes drafting some guys. Like when I have not heard of most of the guys drafted in the first round, then I look at a later round and see a guy like Stephen Davis who became a pretty good player. It scares me to think about recent drafts, as I fear that I will not be hearing about most of these guys drafted in a few years.

Also in that draft Jason Taylor and Marcellus Wiley were passed up for Reinard Wilson(Bengals bench player as far as I can tell), Jon Harris(out of the league), and Nathan Davis(ditto.)

And screw the Jets (Alex Van Dyke), Rams (Eddie Kennison), Chargers (Bryan Still), Bears (Bobby Engram) and Packers (Derrick Mayes).

In 1996, they drafted these busts, instead of picking up on a receiver from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. I think his name was Terrell Owens....

Here's the granddaddy of them all...

In 1980, the Golden State Warriors traded their center and the No. 3 pick to the Boston Celtics to get the number 1 pick, where they drafted Joe Barry Carroll (who?).

The center was Robert Parish. The Celtics used the pick to draft Kevin McHale.

The Warriors basically handed the Celtics three championships.

Martin helped lead them to the Superbowl. I wouldn't classify that as a "horrible" pick. Letting him go to the Jets, THAT was a mistake.

I think he's bashing the teams that took all those guys ahead of Martin. Only Kaufman and Wheatley were anything close to decent.

Now this I don't agree with. Couch is turning out to be a pretty good quarterback in Cleveland, and I think he'll only get better. And Culpepper is disintegrating before our very eyes.

I wouldn't say Culpepper is disintegrating at all, I just think he was overrated after his first full year. The rest of his team sucks hard also, pathetic O-Line, and no team could win with that patchwork defense. Today, I'd still take Culpepper over Couch.

Trajan Langdon was a top player, but you can say that about every draft pick. Langdon had the best job in the NCAA to get overrated on. Designated 3-pt shooter on the best team in America.

What's wrong with taking ANYONE over Spree?

Since you put Jamie Duncan in bold, I know you just forgot to bold Sam Cowart.

Ric Flair drafted Kevin Nash.

How can everyone forget about Ryan Leaf at #1 in 1996(?).

Oh fuck, I'll just have to register another name...

You're batting 0 for 3 in this thread, Pete.

Leaf was already mentioned...

in the 1996 draft post.

You REALLY NEVER know what you're talking about.

Leaf's so bad, he needs to be mentioned in every "Biggest Bust/Worst Pick" thread.

And since it's Christmas: :stupid:

Nah. She said "You don't know what you're talking about", something I said to her a while back on ST.

It's Alina/Leena/Black Widow/The Hummer Driver/The Person Who Raised the Briefcase and Assassinated JFK.
