Guest I'm That Damn Zzzzz Report post Posted December 21, 2002 I'm bored so I wrote this review. Nyko Playcube is a wire that lets the user connect Sony Playstation 2 controllers to the Nintendo Gamecube, costs $10 US new. I tested it with three games: Eternal Darkness, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Luigi's Mansion. The controllers used were the Sony Brand PS1 Dual Shock and Mad Catz Dual Force 2. Eternal Darkness: To make the controller do anything the Analog button on the controllers had to be toggled off and on. After that I could navigate the menus easily with the analog stick, but the characters simply refused to respond at all to the analog stick, rendering it worthless for gameplay. Super Smash Bros. Melee: The Sony PS1 brand Dual Shock worked beautifully and smashes were ten times easier to pull off than with the Gamecube Controller. The Mad Catz would work for about two minutes then stop responding, which is bad. A minor but fatal flaw is the PS1 controller seemed to add an attack (the PSX X button, which is GC's A button) while jumping and only when jumping, regardless whether the stick or buttons were used to initiate the jump. (That may be becaues my PSX controller is worn.) During the credits/shooter segment, the cursor bounced ever so slightly up and down, but again that may be my controller's fault. If it wasn't for the jumping bug, the PSX controller is the far better option. Luigi's Mansion: The analog stick doesn't have any subtle movement at all (Luigi can only run regardless how far or slightly the stick is pushed, gently push the stick and Luigi is supposed to tiptoe, the PSX controllers act as if the stick is always at maximum.) The Sony controller's shoulder buttons needed to be double pressed in order to act as pushing the GC triggers all the way in. The Mad Catz PS2 controller has analog shoulder buttons, but it's how hard you press them in, not how far, so to use Luigi's vacuum to the max the shoulder buttons have to be smacked pretty good, if not done hard enough they have to be released to attempt again. This disrupts the game (the vacuum needs to be locked on to the ghosts, letting go of the button disengages the vacuum and the ghost escapes.) Otherwise, I like the PSX controller for this game and I played it over an hour with the Mad Catz controller. Please note I haven't tried it with an Official Sony brand PS2 Dual Shock 2 controller yet, so the results with it may be different. From my brief use it's not worth the $10 I paid for it. Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted December 23, 2002 Well, that is certainly the most stupid accessory I've ever heard of. I could have told you that it wouldn't work, I mean, they make games on each platform specifically for that platforms controller...
