Favorite / Least Favorite Battle Royales

Recommended Posts

I know this goes against the consensus of most of the IWC, but I am a HUGE battle royal(e) mark. It's something about the unpredictability (of most) of the match and the process of elimination that I enjoy as well. Anywhoo, please list your lavorite and least favorite battle royals here.

Favorite - - - 20-Man WrestleMania 2 Battle Royal - - - It featured 6 NFL players including 2 defending Super Bowl Bears, William "The Refridgerator" Perry and Jimbo Covert in Chicago of all places. Plus, the Rookie of the Year Bill Fralic was involved as well. How many teams would allow their stars participate in something like this today?!? On the wrestling side, you had Andre the Giant, Big John Studd, Hart Foundation, Iron Sheik, Bruno Sammartino, and many more. Now, I know Andre would be the favorite, BUT you also had Bruno, Perry, Studd, and Fralic who also would make believable winners. The match had a nice, steady flow and if IIRC lasted around the 10-minute mark. With 6 guys left, Studd caught The Fridge with an elbow and dumped him. Disgusted, Perry still offered a handshake that Studd fell for. He was eliminated as a result. Kinda corny, but the crowd sure did eat it up. Francis was quietly chucked out by The Hart Foundation leaving those two against Andre. While in trouble for a bit, The Giant got it together enough to dump out Neidhart and Hart to win the battle royal.

Least Favorite - - - 16-Man Battle Royal in Germany - - - This was on Coliseum Video's World Tour 1992 and was JIP w/ 10 guys left. We had Tito Santana, Bret Hart, Sgt. Slaughter, Hawk, British Bulldog, Col. Mustafa, Mountie, Jerry Saggs, Repo Man, and Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Basically, many of the faces were dumped by The Friggin Mountie. The end saw Bulldog and Slaughter team up vs. Repo, Mountie, and Saggs. After more boredom, Slaughter tossed out Repo, but was eliminated by The Mountie. Unfortunately for him, his shananegins w/ the shock stick backfired and he and Saggs were eliminated making Davey Boy Smith victorious. While the result would put a smile on Mr. Barron's face, the match could make any Mountain Dew addict take a siesta.

Your thoughts?

Yes- the battle royal that you refer to does suck major amounts of ass even though the ending rules.

My favourite is the battle royal from 93 to determine the two contenders fpr the I-C title

One of the worst in a long while was the one on Smackdown! in June...to determine who would fight Undertaker at KOTR. They tried to re-do the RR 94 finish with HHH and Hogan but failed miserably. This of course, set up HHH getting his win back against Hogan.

I like the Late-93 Battle royal where the last two guys(Ramon & Martel) had to fight for the IC title.

There's also a decent one on some 1992 coliseum video on which Bret and Shawn fight for the first time(as singles). Tatanka wins it and it has 40 guys in it.

The Smackdown one Superstar mentioned was terrible. As was the Wolfpac vs nWo Hollywood vs Goldberg one at Road Wild 98.

I also agree about the IC title battle royal being my favourite one. My least favourite would probably be any of WCW World War III battle royals. Take your pick.

I liked the Wrestlemania 4 opener. It was filled with 80's talent that I mark out for and Bret Hart almost won it.

My favorite battle royal was the one on Thunder where Ric Flair won.It was the New Blood vs. The Millionaire's Club.I marked out when Macho Man came out started giving New Blood members double ax handles and no sold everybody's offense.

My least favorite one was the one on Smackdown. The one where Hogan and Triple H got eliminated at the same time.Total crap.

My least favorite would have to be the Immunity Battle Royal from Survivor Series 2001. It was too obvious that Test was going to win.

Wrestlemania 17 Battle Royal of Gimmick Legends is by far the worst ever! Sgt Slaughter vs Iron Sheik finish WTF!?!

I think the Iron Sheik's entrance walk to ring lasted longer than the battle royal.

For nostalga it was good.

The cruiserweight battle royal from Slamboree 98 was pretty decent too. I watched this show a few nights ago and with Jericho doing the introductions, and the cruisers flying around in a battle royal I liked it. The storyline with Dean Malenko unmasking after the match and winning the title from Jericho was done to perfection too.

Another interesting one was a 1986 MSG 22-Man Battle Royal on Best of WWF Vol 9. It had one aspect that made it pretty cool and another which I hated.

The one unique thing that made it pretty smooth was that at the end it came down to Greg Valentine vs. Davey Boy Smith, JYD, Lanny Poffo, King Tonga, and Billy Jack Haynes. Yes, 5 faces against one heel. So, Valentine dumps out everyone except JYD.

However, all the while, Jimmy Hart has been hiding under the ring with the camera panning to him, while peeking up, about 5-6 times throughout the match. If this doesn't spell O-B-V-I-O-U-S E-N-D-I-N-G, I don't know what will.

So, JYD grabs Jimmy Hart and throws him in the ring. Hart does end up getting some cheap shots on JYD, but sure enough, JYD and Valentine ended up eliminating each other in a rather sloppy spot (Doing it right by the announcing table didn't help either). JYD literally just ended up sitting on the apron before just giving himself up and jumping on the floor. Ughhhh!

Oh well, it was a battle royal and still a very good one w/ a crappy ending.

I love the concept of the WW3 battle royals but they always screwed up the booking with missed opportunities

except for the second one when it came down to NWO's 4 guys in one corner.. WCW had 4 gys in the other..with DDP in the middle..good stuff

The worst was the Bunkhouse Stampede PPV

damn that thing was awful .. the first PPV i bought at my own house

No battle royales have came to my head, except Battle Royal At The Albert Hall, so I guess that counts for both.

I remember that one. Sean Mooney and Lord Alfred Hayes took the piss out of the jobbers on the way to the ring. I think I'll have to go and watch it now.

Is this the one where the Cat was in their hitting everything that moved with his Red shoe?

I remember a battle royal from Saturday Night Main Event where Andre the Giant head butted Lanny Poffo and eliminated him. I don't know why but that's all I remember from it.

I remember that one.....Hercules wins it.It wasn't long after Andre's heel turn and McMahon kept talking about how brutal Andre was. I marked like a mutha when Andre headbutted the back of Hogan's head and tossed him over the top rope. And I'm pretty sure it was in Detroit. I loved to watch it in slow motion and see the crowd behind Andre react when Hogan goes out.

I've never been a big battle royal fan but I like the Wrestlemania 4 one and the WCW cruiserweight one.

converge..........the crowd actually boos when Dusty wins the Bunkhouse Stampede for the third year in a row. That was the best part of the whole match.

The World War 3 one that Scott Hall wins with the clusterfuck overbooked finish is the worst.

That was horrible b/c Savage never made any contact. They were weak looking blows and every sold it like they'd been shot.
