Favorite old school Sports game

Recommended Posts

Guest kingkamala

I don't play a lot of video games these days due to a lack of free time...but back when I was wee lad I used to love playing sports games. My favs are:

Madden 94: The first Madden with real NFL teams before they had generic teams. I won the Superbowl as the Miami Dolphins(Which I am shamed to admit these days), but the Patriots team in the game sucked(It was the pre-Bledsoe Patriots).

NBA Bulls Vs Lakers/ Bulls Vs Blazers: Sure the controls were confusing at best and you only had eight teams to pick from but this game was ground breaking at the time. I always played as the Boston Celtics(The Celtics' teams from these games were the team that featured a washed up Larry Bird and Reggie Lewis). I was pretty good at this game, I always beat my younger brother, he could never beat me in neither of these games until one day he beat my with the Sonics in like 1997.

I guess it counts......unless it was one of the first PS1 games so NBA Live 96 doesn't count(Unless your talking 'bout the Sega Genesis or SNES versions)

Madden '93 Championship Edition -- had a bunch of old teams, and I loved the gameplay.

NHL '94 -- had the gameplay of '93, PLUS one-timers, PLUS funny arena music, PLUS control-a-goalie feature...

I always LOVED NHL '93. I liked the fights and the fact that during halftime, you could watch computer simulated games. I was 6 so I was impressed with that.

I also loved World Series 1994. The Home Run Derby was my favorite part. There was also this baseball game, I forget its name, where you could tour the stadiums. Kanas City Royal's water fountain always mesmerized me.

You could tour the stadiums in RBI 4 for Genesis. Game jobbed to WSB overall though (*does cartwheel during home run trot*).

John Madden Football Championship Edition (1992, Genesis) - Mentioned up above, this game ruled.

NBA Live 95 & 96 (1994 & 1995, Genesis) - I definitely had fun with the Vs. games (as I was sure to buy each one when they came out), but that series had its share of problems. Live was getting major hype before its release. It was being billed as a revolutionary title in the genre...and that ended up being the case.

I remember playing it for the first time. I chose Golden State. About half a minute into the game, I got a steal and ran the court for a fast break dunk with C Webb. To say the least, I totally marked out. Sans JAM and Run & Gun (arcade only), there wasn't really any other basketball game on the market that had this sort of pacing and gameplay speed. 96 was even better by adding the classic create a player trick. If you entered, say, Larry Bird or MJ's name when creating a player, the game would automatically create them for you. This was the case for both legends and rookies who weren't included. A shame it was taken out of all subsequent versions.

Run & Gun (1993, Arcade) - To this day, this is still one of my favorite sports titles of all time. Not wanting to do a total JAM ripoff, Konami took the approach of creating an un-over the top, arcade styled basketball game. Killer graphics (that crowd absolutely owned) and excellent gameplay. The dunks were especially nicSure, it didn't have the NBA license, but they had likenesses for most everybody.

This was the first game to include the manual double clutch, which just reappeared in basketball games THIS YEAR for some ridiculous reason. Why it was ignored all these years is beyond me (Midway's Hangtime, which came out in 96, was the only other game to include it). Run & Gun also featured the behind the basket camera which is now the default in nearly all games of this sport. And to top it off, this was the first to include the manual alley oop as well.

NBA JAM (1993, Arcade) - The most successful arcade game in history for a reason...it owned. I was practically living at the arcade at this point. I just could not get enough of this game. Home ports were quality, and T.E. also ruled.

Tecmo Super Bowl (1991, NES) - Incredible title to come out the now renamed Tecmo (Itagaki-san recently renamed it to "Company That Is Better Than That Piece Of Shit Namco" if you hadn't heard). Above the great gameplay, this game was all about seeing your player return from injury, running out of the hospital with full football gear on.

Tecmo Basketball (1992, NES) - Other than the nasty flicker (which my friend had somehow mastered, so his players seemingly teleported all over the court), this was quite good. Gots to love those Tecmo in-game cutscenes, especially the ones for full court no look passes. And Bulls99 > Most everybody, except for maybe Drexler and Larry Legend.

I'll go with...

Madden '92 for Genesis,

NHL '94 for Genesis, and

Front Page Sports Football for PC (1994). They went with NFL licensing the next year, but none of the later releases were as good as the 1994 version with generic teams and MAD league customization options.

It was released for SNES as "NBA Give & Go", with licensed NBA players, teams and courts.

I have it, coolies :)

I'll take the original Tecmo Bowl for NES any day of the week. It had one of my all-time favorite Browns in the game; The Ice Cube Gerald McNeil!

However, I also remember John Elway's Quarterback for NES being tons of fun as well.

The Tecmo Bowl football games.

Tecmo Basketball - I remember taking some so-so NBA player named Scott Brooks and running wild in that game. I believe I did this same game in two other games, as I remember using him with Houston and Philadelphia, as well Minnesota where he was in this game.

The early EA college football games - I remember beating up teams like Notre Dame 93-0, while gaining lesser, but still dominating wins over Florida St. and Florida. Alas, by the third one, I started disliking it when they decided that the AI had to score at least 20 points a game, and I had to face useless jobber teams in non-conference games(unless I lucked out and was given Notre Dame) instead of big league teams like in the past ones.

Ice Hockey for Nintendo - I remember finding the way to score every time I touched the puck, and thus won games by huge margins, including my hammering my boastful friend and his brother in two separate games.

NHL '93(?) for Sega Genesis - I remember loving this game, but losing it at some point.

some old beach volleyball games for Nintendo - Can't remember what they were called, but they were fun stuff back in the day. I am actually seeing more of these come out lately. I might have to pick up one.

Yeah, thought it wasn't exactly the same game. <thumbs up> for you owning it though.

I can't believe I forgot to mention Coach K, as it's my favorite sports game ever. Shattering the backboard was a near religious experience.

In old school NFL games I always sucked as the Patriots(My favorite team), cause at the time (early to mid 90's) the Patriots sucked. So when they came out with Madden 94 I was so excited since they had the '85 Patriots and all the other retro teams(The year they first went to the Super Bowl and got schmucked by the Bears). I was like"YES GOD DAMMIT I CAN FINALLY WIN AS MY FAVORITE TEAM".

However in old school NBA games I always kicked ass as the Celtics and it was based on the mid 90's Celtics when they had a really young Antoine Walker, Dee Brown, two white guys and a fan playing for them and they didn't even win 1/3rd of there games. Yet somehow I always managed to kick ass as them.

NHL '94: You could do that one "go around the goal and shoot" and you could score every time. It was awesome.

NHL 94 was a kick ass game and I don't even play hockey. I always played as the LA Kings cause I wasn't and I'm still not a hockey fan and I didn't know much about hockey but I knew Gretzky played for the Kings so I played as them. My brother always killed me as the Bruins but hey it was all good.

Sports Talk Baseball for genesis!

it had real commentary people! "he dropped it!" "outfield out, outfield in, outfield normal!" "after 1 inning the score is Toronto NOTHING, Atlanta NOTHING"

and NHL 94 was pretty groundbreaking too
