One of the coolest movies I have ever seen. It was French, and dubbed, which was somewhat distracting and it kind of put me off at first (don't know why, I didn't have a problem with a dubbed Crouching Tiger at all. But the filming was great. Every shot was absolutely beautiful, a feast for the eyes. The story was good, and not what I was expecting at all. Very interesting, though ultimately I think I missed a few things for various reasons (another TV was on and ours was a little low so it was hard to hear at times), but I got the basic gist and I liked it.

 

The fights . . . wow. Just, wow. The final battle with the dude with the bone/chain/sword weapon and everything immediately before/after was just frickin' sweet.

 

Has anyone else seen this? Thoughts? I loved it, and plan to buy the DVD when money allows.

Get on Ebay and find the 3 disc canadian version of the DVD. The US version is terrible.

I got it from Thunder DVD for 35 dollars (including shipping) and it got from Canada to Texas in six days.

 

Did anybody get it for cheaper?

I got the 3-disc set for around $30 at a local store (in NYC). The US version supposedly has a much better transfer, but I'm happy with my extras-heavy Canadian one.

 

That bone sword fight at the end was awesome. It was like Soul Calibur come to life.

 

There's a mega-special edition that's only available in France--the upshot is that there are no subtitles. It has 4 discs, cooler cover art, a separate movie-only DVD (which I assume is equal to the Universal version, quality wise), and even more extras than the 3-disc. And no, I'm not buying this again.

As far as i know the only difference is extras. The US version has none, while Canadian version 3 disc set has alot.

 

I have no clue on the technical aspects of both.

Who gives a fuck which version has a "better dub". Watching foreign language films dubbed is for morons. Watch them subtitled, the way they are supposed to be seen.

Um, did I say I liked one version better than the other? No, I did not. Proclaiming that dubs are for morons is also a pathetic attempt at sounding artsy. What works for some may not work for others. I enjoy both versions of films. If I wish to concentrate more on the visual aspects, I'll watch a dubbed version. if I'm intent on being anal about every little word in the damn movie I'll watch the sub.

 

Seriously, it's a dumb argument. Not everyone is into watching movies for purity. As a writer and storyteller myself, I enjoy both aspects of watching film, foreign or no. If the goal of a film maker is to entertain people, then let them be entertained in the way they choose.

 

My question was whether or not there's actually a different dub in the Canadian dub or not.

Whether or not there is dubbing in the Canadian version pales in comparsion to the fight scene before the hunt for the beast begins. The Indian whose name escapes me no matter how hard I try...he is hardcore, ladies and gentlemen. Truly hardcore.

Dubbing sometimes pisses me off, but I didn't think BOTW's was too bad. For some reason, French movies tend to have unusually good dubbing.

It has nothing to do with being artsy, it's about being intelligent and watching movies they way they are supposed to be seen. The same goes with people who prefer fullscreen to widescreen, it's just ignorance and stupidity.

Not always, there are exceptions. Like Stanley Kubrick, who shot his movies with both widescreen and fullscreen viewing ratios in mind. Or like with some foreign movies (especially anime) that are dubbed in their native language, so having it dubbed into English isn't really diminishing the experience.

Dude, any director that is against subs or dubs is the one that's an idiot. They're telling a story, and as long as the story gets put out there, that is what's important. I prefer widescreen films, but my step-father prefers fullscreen. We see the same film, we get the same story, and in the end we've been entertained in the same way.

 

As long as the story gets out there, that's all that is important. The rest of the technical aspects are merely tools to help get that story out there.
