I would rather them not sign Pudge just because I see it ending up being another bust. I don't think he has but maybe 2-3 years left...

If they do sign him, they need to make it clear that he's not a long-term answer at catcher. Geronimo Gil showed some nice defense last year, and deserves his share of time behind the plate. I'd pencil Pudge in for 90 games behind the plate this year, and then 50-60 at DH or first. Decrease the catching time by 10-20 games per season. It shouldn't be hard to make him into a first baseman, though it would be a shame to waste that arm.

As for the Oriole rotation, I'm not expecting them to sign anyone. Baldwin is murder in a hitters' park like Camden Yards, Daal is way too inconsistent, and Rogers is just plain old. He'd probably be the best bet to sign, though, since he could get an incentive-laden one-year deal and pass along some veteran leadership to the younger pitchers. A soft tosser like Rogers would be a great resource for someone like John Stephens to learn from.

Carl Pohlad is a terrible owner. But the Twins had a winning record last season, and are probably one of the favorites to make the World Series this season.

Well, I got one wish..

The Orioles signed Omar Daal to a 2 year deal.

It gives them their first Lefthanded starting pitcher (I didn't realize this..?) since Jimmy Key in 1998.

He was 11-9 with the Dodgers last year, and a combined 24-16 with the Phillies and Dodgers over the last two years.

Also, I completely forgot someone who will be in the Rotation next year...Pat Hentgen..I dunno how he'll do coming off Tommy John Surgery and not playing a full year since 2000 (when he went 15-12 with the Cardinals)..

Rotation:

Lopez

Ponson

Daal

Hentgen

Johnson

Thats not that bad..

Congratulations on getting Daal, I feel he was undervalued and has the chance to be a 15 game winner. He has a great curve and if he is happy in Baltimore maybe he will play well. I would much rather him sign with Baltimore than a team like the Yankees or Mets even though my team won't sign anyone I am happy he signed with someone whose payroll isn't over 100 million.

Finally the Braves have a 1st baseman other than those Francos! Robert Fick signed with the Braves today, good move for the Bravos.

Does anyone know of any good baseball discussion boards on the net? I have been looking for a while now and haven't come across any that I really like.

The newest rumor is Colon to the Marlins for Brad Penny. Montreal would then send Penny to Cincy for Luke Hudson and Cincy would send Florida another minor leaguer. The only hold up is Cincy wants to check Penny's medical records to make sure he is okay. Gammons said the deal is basically done.

As a cincy fan this is great news, Penny for Hudson works for me. Penny has the potential to be a 20 game winner. Dempster and now Penny, we just keep picking off the young Florida starters one by one, eyeing A.J. Burnett.

Penny's a good pitcher, but that arm would worry me. Florida's got a horrid track record with dealing with young pitchers.

Rotoworls is reporting that the Colon deal is pretty likely not to happen now. Apparently, Cincy is very concerned about Penny's arm (justifiably, IMO), and they're basically pulling out. If this deal falls thru, I think Colon will end up with the Red Sux, giving them a top 3 of Pedro, Colon, and Derek Lowe. Not too shabby.

Minaya should have traded Colon at the winter meetings. They aren't going to get anything for him now. At least before Contreras was announced as a FA they had the Yankees and Red Sox in the hunt now NY is gone and Boston knows they will have to give up nothing to get him.

Damn whenever I get excited about a possible Reds trade it never occurs. We really needed Penny in our rotation this year to even be competitive, god I need to pick a new team to follow.

I could see the Reds finishing as high as third this year. They have a pretty good lineup.

C- Jason LaRue

1B- Sean Casey

2B- Aaron Boone

SS- Felipe Lopez (good prospect with 20 HR power)

3B- Brandon Larson (Hit .340 in IL last year....excellent power)

LF- Adam Dunn (most similar at 22.....Darryl Strawberry)

CF- Ken Griffey Jr.

RF- Austin Kearns

Then there's the pitching.....

Ryan Dempster (Better than his ERA would indicate, but needs to keep the ball in the park)

Jimmy Haynes

Chris Reitsma (3.64 ERA, and time to improve)

Danny Graves

Jose Acevedo (good AAA numbers last year)

They also have a good bullpen, so who knows? Like many teams, a few good breaks and they're a contender.

The Colon trade is officially dead, Florida pulled out and instead traded for a pitcher from Detriot, although Cincy does still have interest in Penny.

Boone said he was going to use Reitsma out of the bullpen. I predict Pete Harnisch will take his spot in the rotation.

In Orioles news, it looks like either Ivan Rodriguez will take a lower offer and play for the Orioles or go to Japan and take an even bigger pay cut. No other teams are interested in signing him, so the Orioles are using that to try and get him to come down from his high salary demands. While this isn't really new news, it does make me wonder if he will come down on his demands..

I still don't think they should sign him...

He will eventually. His agent is just using Japan to try and add negotiating leverage. It isn't working.

It sure isn't. The Orioles haven't budged, and haven't indicated any intention to do so in light of the Japan threats. In reality, he's probably worth another million or two per year. If I were the Orioles, I'd tack on a million a year out of good faith, just so, if they do sign him, he's not unhappy about taking a lowball offer to avoid going to Japan.

I still don't understand why Mike Bordick didn't resign with the Orioles, its not like he went to a good team in Toronto.

The Orioles didn't offer Bordick arbitration or a new deal, which would have made him ineligible to re-sign with them until May 1. Toronto was probably the best offer he got, since I can't imagine there was a lot of demand for him on the free agent market. Not that he's a bad player or anything, but he's a good defenive player and mediocre hitter, a pretty common combo at SS.

Hmmm... the Expos don't really come off the deal too shabbily. Hernandez, Biddle and Liefer, not to mention some cash... looks OK to me.

RobEDangerously, add Albie Lopez to the Royals rotation. Also, getting rid of Neifi Perez is not a "loss."

As for the Colon trade, the White Sox win this one. Looks like the Twins have a competitor after all.

I'm a huge sox fan too, but now we have like one and a half pitcher. Maybe two if Colon comes out of shape.

The Tigers are absolutely terrible. They'll be lucky not to lose 100 games again.
