Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted January 16, 2003 Well, the Orioles are close to signing Kerry Ligtenberg (sp?) to a 1 year contract, which can only mean that they are gonna make a trade with someon in the bullpen (W. Robberts?)
Guest DrTom Report post Posted January 16, 2003 Why does everyone think Colon gives the White Sox the division title? Sure, he's good, but what about the rest of their rotation? Mark Buerhle is an arm blowout waiting to happen, though he probably has another good year or two before the spectre of Tommy John comes calling. They need a lot of younger pitchers to step up and be better than last year. Maybe they will, but if they don't, there's no way the Sox win the Central. Guest Kingpk Report post Posted January 16, 2003 I wish I could say getting Jeremy Giambi WASN'T the biggest move Theo Epstein has made so far as Red Sox GM. I realize he's trying to rebuild the minors and all, but we're going into year 85 of futility here. Plus, next offseason, he's gotta deal with Pedro, Nomar, Lowe, and others, so who knows if he can keep them.

I'm happy that they arent following the same old routine in going out and getting more big names so that us fans will be "satisfied". I happen to think the team we have right now is good enough to challenge for the playoffs just like last year. Lets not forget that they had 93 wins and didnt make the playoffs because there happened to be many other great teams last season, some of which overachieved. Guest alkeiper Report post Posted January 17, 2003 Why does everyone think Colon gives the White Sox the division title? I don't think it gives them the title, just an oppurtunity to compete. If everything goes their way, they can win. In any case, they're a better team than they were two days ago. As for the Red Sox, 93 wins will bring you the playoffs most of the time. Besides, the Sox are much better. They replaced Tony Clark with Jeremy Giambi. They picked up Todd Walker and Bill Mueller. Casey Fossum is developing well. They probably won't catch the Yankees, but they have a shot at the wild card.

Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted January 17, 2003 No worries about the White Sox. The Twins are the better team. They kicked the White Sox asses last season, with all 4 infielders and starting pitchers except Reed having down years. I can't wait for the season to start. The Twins have to be right up their in terms of making the World Series. They have a year of post season experience, and there's no dominate team like years past. Guest alkeiper Report post Posted January 17, 2003 No dominant team? The AL has several. The Yankees won 103 games last year, and added Japan's best hitter. The A's won 102 games and added Erubiel Durazo. The Twins have a weak division, but the league is anything but easy.

Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted January 22, 2003 Pudge to Florida for 1 year 10 million. Makes me happy that they didn't give in and give him money and him turn out to be hurt and a bust..
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted January 23, 2003 $10 million is still high for Pudge, considering his injury history. However, if he plays 140 games, it could be a steal. And if he's a bust, a one year deal won't hurt the Marlins. Good to see them making a move to imprve the team for once in their lives.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted January 23, 2003 I don't see that as a great signing by the Marlins, for a few reasons. 1. They overpaid. 2. Pudge's history of injuries means he'll probably never catch 130 games again. If healthy, he might be good for 110, maybe 120. Without a DH, you lose a $10 million bat for 40+ games a year. 3. Pudge goes from a hitter's park in Texas to a pitcher's park in Florida, right at the time his power skills should be declining. 4. While he's great defensively, Pudge has never been known for being great at calling a game and working with young pitchers. The Marlins have a young staff who will be looking to their veteran catcher for leadership. He's certainly better than what they had, but I don't see this as being a very good deal. Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted January 24, 2003 Only the Marlins could be this inept and just flat out stupid when it comes to baseball. Just two weeks ago they said they could not afford to take on Bartolo Colons salary. Colons salary is all of $8.2 million while Ivan will now make $10 million. Colon would have brought Florida more victories then Pudge will. Yes I am just bitter because the Marlins nixed the Colon trade which then meant the Reds could not get Penny, because the only way the Marlins would have of traded Penny is if they got Colon. Still what a stupid team.
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted January 25, 2003 Consider that the Marlins needed a hitter much more than they needed a pitcher. They have Burnett, Beckett, Penny, and a host of pitching prospects, but their best hitter is Mike Lowell.
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted January 25, 2003 If they needed a hitter and had that much money to spend they should have kept Floyd and Millar.
