Guest I'm That Damn Zzzzz Report post Posted December 26, 2002 I found this on Google that may be helpful: Windows 95 will only display 16 colors at 640x480 Description: In the Windows 95 Device Manager under Display Properties, the only choice on the Settings tab for "Color palette" is 16 colors and the "Desktop area" only has a choice for 640x480 or is grayed out. Windows may have been reinstalled, or the display adapter was deleted in Device Manager and Windows did not redetect the video card. Windows may have given an error that there was a problem initializing the video adapter. If you start Windows 95 in SAFE MODE, the display driver is automatically changed to Standard VGA in 16 colors at 640x480 resolution. Your installed display adapter drivers are temporarily disabled in Safe Mode. Cause: The video driver selected is standard VGA. When Windows 95 is first installed, if it cannot detect the display adapter type, the standard VGA driver is installed instead. If "Color palette" has more options, but "Desktop area" does not, the monitor type may be undefined or incorrect. On the PowerSpec system the video adapter may be detected as "Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA.)" Solution: Install correct video drivers or update existing drivers for the system. If the monitor is not detected as a Plug-and-Play display type, then select the correct monitor from the supported list, or select a compatible display type. "Standard monitor types: Super VGA 1024x768" will work in most cases. If you select a Color palette larger than the adapter supports, Windows should provide an error message stating there was a problem initializing the video adapter. If you select a Desktop area (screen resolution) larger than what the monitor can support, the display will appear scrambled or distorted, sometimes appearing to "roll" or "spin." If the system is configured to restart when changing video modes, and you cannot read the display, use the keys to restart Windows (control-Escape, "U", "R"), and press F8 to get the Startup menu. Start Windows in Safe Mode, and change the display properties / settings back to a compatible resolution. Basicall, reinstall the video drivers and the monitor under video properties. If that doesn't help I'll try to find a better answer later.
