Guest cynicalprofit Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 I remember listening to the song and Im thinking, ok, fun little pop song, last 2-3 months, and she disappears back into Canada. Boy was that wrong. Im searing and hearing about all these kids basically ripping off her, style wise and what not, and im like WTF. So i go watch the video closely, and Im watching and listening to the song and I come across 2 things. One its a bragging song about how she beat out some girl for a boy, and two, she says nothing thats important. So I dont get it, whats the fascination, its like some whinny 16 year old bragging about how she got a boy, big deal. We have the most creative minds ever, and this is what we choose to record?(Bill's words still ring true....spooky)
Guest CanadianChick Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 You want to know why? It's because she's different from what teenage girls have been used to for the last couple years. And her songs are catchy. BUt I agree, the style thing is way outta control. It's funny, because at first it was "anti-mainstream" and now it is mainstream.
Guest cobainwasmurdered Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 because most people have no taste and when somebody comes along with a different sound that they can still manipluate the music busniss jumps on it.
Guest Flyboy Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Eh, all her music isn't that bad. "Sk8er Boi" & "Complicated" are just bad examples of her work. "I'm With You" will be played out, and therefore ruin a good song. Oh well. As long as "Tomorrow" is my song and mine only, then everything is okay.
Guest Flyboy Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 because most people have no taste Like most Nirvana fans.
Guest Choken One Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Nah, Cobain was different in 1991...Avirl been done before...just not 3 years ago...which is as long as the fickel mainstream can recall.
Guest Banky Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 By 93, Cobain was making records directed more towards the underground. In Utero was a rougher, darker, and rawer record than Nevermind. They were so good at what they did that they attracted the mainstream to very unconventional music.
Guest Flyboy Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Well, of course, Avril has been done before. Plus, that was a crack at cwm more than anything.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Avril Lavigne is only a success because she's making manufactured pop/rock and disguises herself as a badass punk rocker.
Guest Flyboy Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Avril Lavigne is only a success because she's making manufactured pop/rock If that's true, I'd hate to see her make her own music. Her music is fun to listen to even though it can be horrible to some people. It isn't the best, but it isn't the worst (well, maybe "Sk8er Boi"). Avril is a success because most people want her to be. This can be followed up by looking at Britney, Christina, N'Sync, BSB, whoever. Hell, we can look at movies and if America is liking it then there is nothing we can do about it except ignore it if we don't like it. *points to Maid In Manhattan* If we like it, then more power to us.
Guest Choken One Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Now the Mainstream wants to promote itself as Postitive...That they are done with the Blone Bimbo craze and Moved onto exploiting 16 year old mallrats...which was popular in 1995 and is again 7 years later.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Young, cute, pouty...that's marketable. Doesn't do much for me, but good for her. Plus people are tired of the Britney sound.
Guest Choken One Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Exactly, besides even Brit is tired of herself...Let her pull a Madonna and leave music for two years...make a couple Movie flops and return Dirtier then before...Marry a Older Overated actor for two and divorce him...Have a How to Fuck DVD and go through a hiatus and return as a Decent and moral person.

Don't forget the Playboy layout that comes 5 years too late for anyone to care.
Guest cobainwasmurdered Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 because most people have no taste Like most Nirvana fans. someone's still upset about the puberty joke.
Guest Banky Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Man, Britney Spears is 100,000,000,000x better looking than Avril Lavigne. C'mon, who is interested in a frail, boring, and young looking girl like that? She is beyond unattractive. Britney on the other hand, is someone you can take home to mom. I'd have her screaming in 2.2 seconds. Whooo-ah! But seriously, Britney Spears is better than Avril because she is comfortable with the music she plays. Britney knows her role as a poppy, r&b singer/entertainer. Avril is a poppy, bubblegum spokesman with a forced punk image. Goodness, Michael Jackson is more punk than Avril. Keep in mind kiddies, she got her first break on stage with Shania Twain. 'Nough said.
Guest Choken One Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Oh yeah, Brit is 10 miles better looking then Avril.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Britney's music blows hard...I'm not a fan of Av's...but it's catchy and gives the kids something new. This Britney/Christian/Mandy/Boy band shit should just die and let the next fad come in and get over with
Guest Youth N Asia Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 And she's hot. Hardly. She's got a very plain cuteness to her
Guest Choken One Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Very fucking Plain. Too damn White for me.
Guest Flyboy Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 And she's hot. Hardly. She's got a very plain cuteness to her She's CUTE. I will admit that. Hollywood said she was "hot". Big difference.
Guest B-X Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Yea, this Avril bitch was singing country tunes like two years ago. Yep, she's PUNK ASS WOOOO. </sarcasm> By the way, if I ever hear of any of you comparing Avril Lavigne to ANYTHING punk, I will personally dedicate several years of my life to hunting you down, and bitch-slapping you across the mouth in front of your friends and family. You don't do that shit. Avril<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Black Flag
Guest EQ Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 I like her music enough, but I don't know how the hell she calls herself punk. Oh yeah, I've always thought she was attractive. Britney is hot, but Avril is cute in her own way. If I had to chose, I'd probably pick Avril.
Guest EricMM Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Oh yeah, I'm With You is pure guitar driven punk rock. Except she probably spells it rawk. And then I vomit. It's plainly easy to tell when a song is punk and when it's not. Some of Blink 182's early work could be considered punk. Ditto a band like Bad Religion. Some of their work isn't rightly punk, but they've done it. Some bands only do it. Like Rancid and I dunno, Sex Pistols. Avril Lavigne has never done it. Just listen to it. It is pop music. It's not pop because it's popular in that sense, it's pop with ALLL the pop connotations (sp). It's manufactured, she didn't play it, her voice is incredibly synthisized, and it was made to follow up on the latest trend, a trend that was started IIRC when three young men ran naked throughout their video. That's when I think Punk truly became a pop tool. Greenday was popular, but they didn't inspire record labels to hire young teens and teach them to be the Next Big Thing.

Guest HollywoodSpikeJenkins Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 And she's hot. Hardly. She's got a very plain cuteness to her She's CUTE. I will admit that. Hollywood said she was "hot". Big difference. Didn't you use to have a pic of her in your sig?
Guest EQ Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 Maybe we should formally define punk. I think I've got a pretty good understanding of it, but how would you describe it?
Guest EricMM Posted December 30, 2002 Report Posted December 30, 2002 MxPx - Punk Rawk Show Rancid - (anything off Out Comes the Wolves) The Offspring - Nitro Blink 182 - Carosel Bad Religion - I Want To Conquer The World Those are just a few of the songs I read in my playlist that sound pretty punkish, IMO. Listen. Sometimes bands go 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4 in the beginning of a song, to set the tempo. Its not entirely true, but it helps if all 6 numbers are screamed in about one second Seriously, there's really no one definition, but it's just kind of apparent. Bands can also change. For example, Blink 182's First Date is NOT punk. The Offspring's Pretty Fly is NOT punk. There are fine lines. Like MxPx is considered punk by many, but many of their songs are about love and even religion, not society. does that mean it's not punk? Do Your Feet Hurt (Critter Version) is one of my favorite songs by them, but it's certainly a love song. Can they be punk?
