Source: Parcells, Cowboys agree on 4-year deal

By JEAN-JACQUES TAYLOR and CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING -- Bill Parcells has agreed to a four-year contract that will pay him roughly $4.5 million per season, and will be announced as the sixth coach of the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, a source close to Jerry Jones and Parcells said.

The announcement will culminate a coaching search by Jones that began with two games left on the Cowboys' schedule in a meeting between Jones and Parcells on Dec. 18 at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.

AP

Bill Parcells took both the New England Patriots and the New York Giants to the Super Bowl.

The final details of the contract, including that Parcells will have total control of hiring and firing of assistant coaches as well as a strong say in personnel and draft matters, were concluded in a second meeting Friday on Long Island, N.Y.

Parcells, who has walked away from previous coaching jobs that appeared imminent, including Tampa Bay last year, was expected to fly into Dallas on Tuesday for a press conference.

Bill Parcells

Age: 61

Born: Aug. 22, 1941 in Englewood, N.J.

Record: 138-100-1 in regular season; 11-6 in postseason; 149-106-1 overall

Head coaching experience: New York Giants (1983-90), New England Patriots (1993-96), New York Jets (1997-99), 15 seasons, 239 games

Facts: Reversed the fortunes of three NFL teams. ... After a 3-12-1 season (1983), he took Giants to playoffs twice as wild-Card. ... In 1986 led Giants to 14-2 record and defeated Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI. ... Led Giants to NFC Eastern Division title in 1989. ... In 1990 won second world championship with dramatic victory over Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV. ... Left coaching for two years, returning in 1993 with New England Patriots. ... Within two years led Patriots to playoffs after seven-year absence. ... Two years later, 11-5 Patriots were AFC representative in Super Bowl XXXI. ... In 1997 took over 1-15 New York Jets and led them to 9-7 record in 1997, 12-4 record and AFC Championship Game in 1998 for the best two-year turnaround of a 1-15 team in NFL history. ... NFL Coach of the Year 1986, 1994.

Jones said Monday in a news conference to announce Campo's firing that he had no timetable to name Campo's successor but added, "I hope it can happen quickly." Jones publicly acknowledged having spoken to former Minnesota coach Denny Green about the possibility of becoming the Cowboys' next coach. Jones said in talking to Green, who is black, he was taking seriously a new rule among NFL owners to interview at least one minority candidate when there is a head coaching change.

Jones said his decision to fire Campo, who had three straight 5-11 seasons, "was not about what Dave was unable to do" but instead about a "change in philosophy." Jones said he was ready to hire a coach with previous NFL head coaching experience. All of Jones' previous hires - Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, Chan Gailey and Campo - had no previous NFL coaching experience.

Parcells won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants, reached another with the New England Patriots and took the New York Jets to an AFC championship game.

I'm not sure what to believe, but i'll wait for ESPN/Sportscenter to say something.

Chris Mortensen just reported that it could be announced anyday now. The deal is basically done it's now just a matter of Parcells deciding on what he wants to do.

I don't think Jerry will let go of his GM duties, but he'll probably let Parcells get more involved in the hirings/firings of talent.

I heard a quick thing on ESPN last night about how Parcells signed with Tampa Bay last year and they think they will need to recieve compensation. It was just a short comment though. Did anyone hear more about this?

It's all moot, because the Buccaneers never tendered an "official" contract to Parcells, meaning it had to have been approved by the NFL offices.

According to Mortensen, Parcells never signed any official contract with the Bucs, so Tampa's compensation requests will be denied.

The newspaper said the details of the contract actually were finalized when Jones and Parcells met Friday, two days before the Cowboys' season-ending 20-14 defeat at Washington.

Some of those details, according to the Morning News, was that Parcells would have total control of hiring and firing of assistant coaches as well as a strong say in personnel and draft matters.

The newspaper also reported that Parcells was expected to fly into Dallas for the news conference Tuesday.

Jones began talking with Parcells about two weeks ago and their negotiations have turned serious in recent days. Jones also has spoken with former Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green.

Parcells, an analysts for ESPN, has been close to deals before and walked away, including last year when he signed with Tampa Bay, then changed his mind. Because of that contract, the Buccaneers said Sunday they should have been asked for permission to talk to Parcells and want compensation.

ESPN.com sources are saying the tampering allegations are a non-issue.

As of Monday afternoon, Sexton had yet to receive the letter of complaint the Bucs said they sent him. More important, an NFL official said the league office has not yet received a formal complaint from the Bucs.

League officials said Jones has done all that's necessary to make a move, an indication that the interview with Green met the league's minority candidate requirement.

It'll still be at least 2 more years before the Cowboys do anything of substance. They have no offensive line, their running game is shot, and their quarterback has much to be desired. Their defense is damn good and just needs good coaching, but the pieces on offense need to be there for Parcells to do anything of importance. The Cowboys can stop the run, but cannot run the football with any consistency. If you can stop the run and run the football, you can win in the NFL. That's true NFL fundamentals right there. Emmitt is probrably gone and Troy Hambrick is not the answer, but getting Parcells may attract some free agents that can fill the running void.

Ooh, and the Patriots are playing the Cowboys next season. Maybe it's time to see if Bill Belichick was the REAL brains behind those Superbowls.

Well of course sources close to either side are going to deny it. Most coaches and teams don't want news being confirmed until the official announcement.

Parcells didn't really have a world-beating offense with the Giants, either. He won by pounding Joe Morris and OJ Anderson at opposing defenses, and because his QB didn't make mistakes, all of which supported a strong defense. I think he could win 8-10 games in Dallas next year with a few shrewd personnel moves on offense, mainly to upgrade the line and replace Emmitt.

Parcells did miss the playoff 3 out 4 years has the Jets head coach. I wonder if Parcells is still a good head coach, coaches tend to get worse when they get older like players do.

I'm just wondering how long it will be until Jones and Parcells are at eachother's throats.

This deal could be the move that saves the Crowboys or else dig them into an even deeper hole.

Tampa's demands of compensation from whatever team hires Parcells will also be interesting to see in regards to if Jones would be willing to pay the amount that TB is asking for Parcells.

There's almost no chance their claims would be successful. The last thing I read about this on ESPN said there was never a tendered contract with Parcells submitted to the league offices, and Tampa Bay has filed no charges of tampering despite all their saber-rattling. I guess they're just talking the talk and hoping to get back one of the draft picks they lost bringing Gruden aboard.
