NFL Coach of the Year

Recommended Posts

Guest bob_barron

I think Coach of the Year should go to Herman Edwards- At one point the Jets looked like a lost cause but then he pulled the trigger on the QB situation and got them rolling.

Honourable mention could also go to Jim Fassell and even though they went 7-9- if I recall the Ravens were supposed to do much worse so maybe Brian Billick should get a vote or two

Andy Reid. Won without Donovan McNabb, and Hollis Thomas was out the entire year.

John Fox deserves alot of credit. 6 game improvement, and one the Top defenses in the league.

Why Herman Edwards? He turned the team around but his decision to play Testeverde instead of Pennington got the Jets off to a 1-4 start.

Because he realized his mistake before it was almost too late unluck some other coaches out there.

Outside of Edwards, I would say Jon Gruden for living up to his hype. Even though he did go to a good team.

I'd go w/ Reid just because of the QB situation. There are a bunch of good candidates this season though...

Why Jon Gruden? I mean I don't recall Tampa having any injuries or anything

I give him points for not being a letdown. See Mike Holmgren.

Bill Callahan for the Oakland Raiders.

He came into a very messy situation when Jon Gruden left the team and team morale was in the toilet after getting screwed in the playoffs over what they felt was a bad call. Callahan was moved up as the head coach and everyone was afraid that he was going to change things around and that the team would struggle during the season. But that misconception turned out to be wrong as Coach Callahan kept things the same in regards to the way the team ran plays. He also knew how to treat the older players who had complained that Gruden worked them too hard during his last season with the team and Callahan understood that these guys weren't 26 years old and did not overwork them.

Callahan and the Raiders started the season off with an impressive 4 - 0 start where the Raiders had just destroyed teams with a 20 or more point difference. After a losing several games to inferior teams the Raiders came back stornger than ever with a win over the defending Super Bowl champions the New England Patriots who had won their playoff game against the Raiders due to a controversial call that sealed the Raiders fate in that game. The Raiders decimated the Patriots who had no clue how to stop the Raiders defense and ended up losing to Oakland. Perhaps the most notable event of the season was when the Raiders played hated rival the Denver Brocos at Denver no less where the Raiders had not won a game there since 1994. The Raiders destroyed the Broncos in convincing fashion and hushed the critics who thought this would be the end for the Raiders. The Raiders finished off the regular season with a shutout victory over divvision rival the Kansas City Chiefs which was impressive since the Raiders secondary had been injury plagued leading up to that game.

Now the Raiders are a strong contender to win the Super Bowl with them having a 1st round bye week in the playoffs along with having home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

That's one Hell of a season and Bill Callahan receives my vote as NFL Coach of the Year.

Where's the love for Jeff Fisher?

His team started off 1-4, too, then they proceeded to go 10-1 the rest of the season, win their division, and earn a first-round bye and at least one home game in the playoffs. The Titans had some injury problems, particularly at important positions, and it would have been very easy to pack it in after such a dismal start. But Fisher rallied the team and reminded them that they've been one of the best teams in the AFC for several years. An excellent turnaround, and even better than the one Herman Edwards engineered in Jersey. He'd be second on my list.

Brian Billick deserves no votes because he is a spineless fucking coward.

Who is first on your list Dr. Tom??

About Billick- I know there was one play that angered you (I read in the Midweek News Report) but did he make cowardly plays all season or was it jus a one game mistake?

The guy I spent most of my post pimping. :P

I think he played too close to the vest numerous times. Considering the Ravens fielded the youngest team in NFL history and lost several key players to injuries during the year, a lot wasn't expected of them. The one play you're talking about just incensed me to no end. I'll think Billick a pussy for the rest of his coaching days after that one. I've also disliked the Ravens' tendency to play not to lose when they get a lead in the fourth quarter. A lot of teams do this, so it's not just a Billick thing. The offensive playcalls become conservative, the defense sits in a soft zone, and the Ravens end up coming from ahead to lose. He might not call the offensive and defensive plays, but Billick IS the head coach, and should instill a winning philosophy in his assistants. I thought he was great when he won the Super Bowl, but he's done precious little to impress me since then.

I misread your post- I thought you were referring to Fisher as being second on your list.

No one as love for Fassell? The guy had a team that was left for dead at 6-6 but pulled them together to win their last four games and make the playoffs

Andy Reid will win the award and I agree with him winning it.

Very few people even imagined that the Eagles would only lose one game without McNabb.

THE FRIGGIN BROWNS MADE THE PLAYOFFS FOR CHRISSAKE.

We must celebrate this once in a lifetime achievement.

I don't think I can get on boards with the Herm Edwards vote.

They went to the playoffs last year and got in this year on the like...4th tie breaker or something. The team rebounded from starting poorly...but overall I don't see a big improvement over last season.

What about Dan Reeves?

If Jay Feely wasn't such an asshole the Falcons would be 12-3-1 thats after they went 7-9 last year.

Still no love for Jeff Fisher? Hmph. I don't even like the Titans, but he engineered one hell of a turnaround. Truly I am surrounded by philistines. Andy Reid indeed. The team had a hell of a lot of talent left without McNabb, so I don't see how I did anything that's in any way remarkbable. They were supposed to be really good this year, and they were. It's not that he did a bad job or anything, but he had a lot to work with all season.

I can see your point, Tom. When a team is supposed to be good, does the coach deserve alot of credit, or not? The more I think about, John Fox would get my vote. Who expected Carolina to go 7-9?

"What about Dan Reeves? "

the only thing an Reeves did was loosen the restriction on Vick, then Wade employed a great defense

hes notorious for not letting scrambling qb's just play their game

If he had sent vick's number in one of the times on that cleveland goalline stance...that might have swayed me :)

C'mon Tom, it wasnt that bad of a call. You have to take into account that the Browns hadnt done diddely dick since the first drive of the game. Compound that with the fact that if we had gone for it on 4th & 1.5 yds, that fumblin', bumblin' dufus Jeff Blake would have been taking the snap in a pressure situation. Who knows if the ball would have gotten back to Jamal. While going for it would have been the ballsy thing to do, I dont think punting it constitutes one being a pussy. If you want to be mad at somebody, be mad at McAllister for acting like a rookie and getting that garbage late hit penalty.

My vote would go to Andy Reid with second place going to(even though I hate the team and the state in general) Jeff Fisher.

C'mon Tom, it wasnt that bad of a call.

It was dreadful. It's 4th and a long yard, you're up by only six on the opponent's 35, the wind makes a field goal impossible, and there's about 2:30 on th3 clock. I would go for it there 1000 times out of 1000, for one simple reason: if you make it, YOU WIN. Blake takes a knee thrice, and the Browns get the ball back with a handful of ticks on the clock, needing a TD. if you're ahead by 9, then I think you can punt there. But by 6, when a touchdown beats you, I think you absolutely have to grow a set and go for it. Keep in mind that the Browns are the Cardiac Kids, and they live and die late in the fourth quarter. There's no excuse to just give up the ball there. I despise it when coaches play not to lose instead of clamping down and going for the win.

Who knows if the ball would have gotten back to Jamal.

He has the same chance to fumble any snap, and Jamal has the same chance to fumble any carry. The risk isn't any higher. Blake's a veteran.

If you want to be mad at somebody, be mad at McAllister for acting like a rookie and getting that garbage late hit penalty.

It was a dumb penalty to take, but really, I thought it was a questionable call. He obviously wasn't trying to hit the chap very hard, and looked to be pulling up when he ran into him. It's a judgment call, but I've seen worse hits out of bounds not draw a flag. Besides, if the Ravens hadn't been playing that fucking pussy soft zone, the Browns might not have been marching down the field like they were. Gee, we're up by 6 late in the game, so let's just give them 12 yards on every play. What a fucking brilliant game plan THAT was.

I came very close to putting something thru my TV after watching that one. And I think I could have watched Billick ravaged by a pack of famished wolves and not shed a tear.

I understand your love for Callahan but he inherited a very good team and pretty much did as expected. It just doesn't sound like 'coach of the year' to me

Callahan came into a team where their spirit had been shot and nearly the entire team was on the verge of protesting to League officials en masse at their headquarters and basically piss away their chances of receiving any favorable calls from the officials during the season.

The Raiders were truly on the brink of falling apart during the summer.

Enter Bill Callahan.

Up to that point, the Raiders were unaware of how their future coach would work them and they were all dreading that some new rookie coach was going to come on the team and ruin everything. Finally Al Davis announces that Callahan will be the Raiders new head coach and a change in the team's demeanor and attitude is seen. Callahan came on the team and the Raiders let out a sigh of relief since they were working with someone who was faimiliar with the team's plays and how the team operated.

During the off-season, Callahan worked with the younger players on the team and made them feel as if they were something special which was something that players complained of when Jon Gruden was the head coach. Callahn also showed the older players the respect they deserved and treated them with more restraint in overworking them and treating them like the younger players which was something else that Gruden did which caused problems within the team's structure.

Callahan brought back the Raider's confidence in themselves after having it shattered thanks to a call that would have been their ticker to the Super Bowl where they might have very well won. That thought of "what if?" weighed heavily with the team as they had come so close to winning those rings yet to only have it taken away from them with one bad call.

Coach Callahan made the Raiders believe in themselves and it showed when the regular season started. The Raiders decimated teams in the start of the season and beat each team (Seattle, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Buffalo) by 15 or more points in each game. Then the Raiders went on a 4 game losing streak after various members of their secondary and defensive line had been put on the DL. Then the Raiders come back and shock everyone by beating the rival Denver Broncos *at* Denver 34 - 10 in convincing fashion which the Raiders had not done since 1994. This was supposed to be the 5th game in a row that the Raiders would lose when the game rolled around and the Broncos were supposed to kill off the Raiders. But Callahan rallied his players and soon the Raiders were on a 5 game winning streak where the were beating teams by 10 -15 points or more in each one of those games. The Raiders then ended the season on a high note when they shut out rival Kansas City Chiefs which was a huge game for the Raiders as they earned a first round bye into the playoffs along with home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

He rebuilt the Raiders lost confidence that many felt had been shattered and were in for a rough season. But Coach Callahan picked up some key victories with each in convincing fashion and with the way the Raiders are going into the playoffs, they are a strong contender for the Super Bowl.

Bill Callahan did come into a team that had a lot of talent but he also took on the task of making the Raiders believe in themselves again along with utilizing the talent he had when his secondary became injury plagued for most of the season. It's no coincidence either that Rich Gannon had his best season as a QB after having spent endless hours working with Callahan in refining his game and working on all his flaws.

The Raiders are a very talented team but the coaching that Callahan has displayed this season his been phenominal considering many critics and analysts predicted that the Raiders would go 8 - 8 this season under the new coach.

I'd say he proved them wrong.

Make no mistake about it though. Fisher is a fine choice as the coach of the year and he would be my next choice in line next to Callahan.
