The Redskins are worth the most for more reasons than Revenue. If you know your NFL history, they were the first team to go international with it's broadcasts. They had enough intrigue to carry the NFL when the league was not very prosperous way back in the early days. The Cowboys are closing ground because they are such a love/hate team. Kind of Ironic that they are also the biggest rivalry in sports.

What about Habs/Leafs and Bears/Packers? I'd put Bears and Packers ahead of Cowboys and Redskins in terms of biggest NFL rivalries, as that's been going on almost since the birth of the NFL. However, my view is somewhat biased because of where I am in the country. In hockey, I would say Toronto and Montreal is the biggest rivalry. Blackhawks and North Stars was pretty big for a while too.

I'd give the edge to Redskins/Cowboys because there is a geuine hatred there, kind of like the Broncos/Raiders. Also, it is commonly known that you can toss out records when the Skins/Cowboys play. Red Sox/Yankees is a close #2 and I only give the Skins/Boys an edge because the NFL is clearly the country's most popular sport at the moment. Lakers/Celtics doesn't really intrigue most people I talk to anymore.

Huh? Indy, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Detroit? There are in this WORLD. I've driven to all these places for Football (along with Tennessee and Kansas City).

Agree Choken. I live in the area (with you, I believe) and Cincy has some of the worst attendance in the NFL.

BTW: I wasn't here when the stadium was being built, but someone told me that the city guarantted (sp?) the Browns home game $$$, which means even if they don't sell out they still get paid like it was a sell-out by the city -- is this true?...

It's mostly b/c Mike Brown keeps an insane amount of cap room around. I think they have something like 12 million dollars that they did nothing with this season.

If they expanded the list, you'd probably run across the other 11 NFL teams after about 15 or so. They're worth the most because it's the most stable league and revenues (mostly from the gigantic TV contracts) are the highest, and are shared equally among all teams. Cincinnati being where it is doesn't surprise me in the least.

Raiders/Chargers is a fucking joke and they have never been considered "rivals" in any way out here in the West because of the one sided number of losses against the Raiders.

 

The biggest rivalry in the NFL is either the Raiders/Broncos or the Raiders/Chiefs leaning more towards the first. Unlike the Cowboys/Redskins feud, both the Broncos and Raiders were successful in the league for most of the years that they faced one another and in turn their games were never lackluster because of the animosity between one another.

 

The Yanks/Sox or the Dodgers/Giants rivalry's are two of the most intense in MLB as each team can not stand one another along with their history with one another.

 

The Lakers/Celtics rivalry was intense and was the premiere rivalry in the NBA for many years. But over the last 15 or so years that rivalry has cooled off and I feel that it's a toss up right now for the best rivalry in the NBA.

One thing is for sure though. West coast sports(including rivalries) have not yet seem to capture the same feeling as East coast sports. Maybe it has to do with the fact that on the east coast most states are smaller so all the rival teams are literally a couple hours away as to where here in CA, besides the 49ers/Raiders...every team is so spread out. Out here, you root for your team, and then in the offseason most people forget about them until the start of the following season, as to some places it is a year round following.

Actually, given a couple of years, I think that the Kings/Lakers rivalry could be one of the hottest rivalries in sports history.

 

But I've got to go against all the naysayers about the Redskins/Cowboys rivalry - that week 17 game between the two could have been a total yawnfest, but, gosh darned it, the blood lust of both of those teams (oh, those poor Dallas offensive linemen) make the game one of the most fun games to watch all year, IMO. Even Spurrier, who had quite a flop for his first season as the Redskin ball coach, ended the season looking like a hero, finally handing Dallas a defeat. The only other rivalry that I thought had any sizzle this year would be the Raiders/Broncos, especially with Romo taking Griese (and, essentially, the Broncos) out of the game.

In the NHL there was at one time Manhattan, Uniondale, East Rutherford, Hartford, Boston, and Philadelphia. How's that for close.

The Redskins are worth so much because of the money they put out to get a lot of veterans. I believe it was two years ago, when they signed TONS of good veterans for their defense.

The Leafs/Habs rivalry has suffered since the league expanded back in '67. They played in seperate conferences most of the time, and have not faced each other in the playoffs since the '67 Cup finals. Add to this that neither team has been all that good when the other team was playing well. If they had faced off in the '93 Cup final (when the Habs advanced, but the Leafs couldn't get by the Kings), or in last year's conference final (this time, the Leafs won, but the Habs lost to Carolina) then it would have given the feud a much needed 'injection'. Right now, I like the Leafs rivalry with either the Sens (or maybe even the Devils) over the Habs one.
