Guest bigsugar316 Report post Posted March 9, 2002 I'm having a brain freeze here. What happened leading up to this match? HBK won the Rumble to get the title shot, then he beat Owen at IYH 6, putting his #1 contender on the line, but what happened after that? What lead to it becoming an Iron Man Match? Did Gorilla Monsoon announce it or did Bret or Shawn make the challenge? I remember they had those HBK training videos and stuff and then they introduced Jose Lethario (sp?). Was there any confrontations leading up to the match? Thanks
Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted March 9, 2002 President Piper announced it on RAW. I forget why. He also said that their must be a winner, which is why Monsoon (who had just returned prior to the match) was allowed to send it into overtime.
Guest JHawk Report post Posted March 9, 2002 Piper made it an Ironman Match because Hart and Michaels were both claiming they were in better condition. The Ironman stip was put in for them to prove it.
Guest Crasper Report post Posted March 9, 2002 I can't remember any confrontations on TV, but they definetly had a lumberjack match on some house show, and they opposed each other in various tag matches, with partners such as Diesel, Sid, Steve Austin and maybe even The Undertaker. Guest DEEP THOUGHT Report post Posted March 9, 2002 What lead to it becoming an Iron Man Match? Maybe the bookers looked at the WWF roster and realized how piss poor it was in 1996. They made the title match an ironman bout so they could get away with only having 6 matches on the card.
Guest DrEvil Report post Posted March 9, 2002 Piper's explanation was that anyone can get a quick win in a match, he wanted something that would definitively determine who the better man was. Thus the ironman match was put out with a 1 hour time limit. But, Deep Thought made the right call. It was the only way they could cover enough time with the roster on hand. Guest nWoScorpion Report post Posted March 10, 2002 yea, they evrn put 2 matches suppose to b on The PPV on the FFA. Godwinns v. Donnas (shudders) and NAcho vs. huckster. LOL. Both sucked, but the comedy one was hilarious.
Guest Drury37 Report post Posted March 10, 2002 They needed the Iron Man Match if the WWF wanted WWF WrestleMania XII to go 3 hours. What would have been better was if they had the same match but it wasn't an Iron Man Match but it just went 65 minutes, like the Flair/Steamboat classics!!! Thanks.
Guest converge241 Report post Posted March 16, 2002 they really needed to fill time. Notice the length of the Piper-Goldust match as well. Drury's right it should have been an unannounced long match. I didnt like the idea of no falls because in "modern" WWF ,no one went that long without losing/winning a match. Thats pretty bad if the rumor was true that they did that because neither guy wanted to job first. they still could have a tie at the end and did that whole overtime scenario with a 2-2 or 3-3 tie. Guest Metallica Report post Posted March 17, 2002 They did have one interview together with Vince in the ring, it was all very friendly stuff though lol How times change.. I remember Bret having a match (against HHH?) and Shawn came down, pulled out a chair and sat in the aisle and watched the match.. Bret did the same thing in one of Shawn's matches too, I think he was against one of Al Snow's alter egos..Shinobi I think.
Guest nWoScorpion Report post Posted March 17, 2002 I think it was during Shawn Michaels vs. 1-2-3 Kid (X-Pac) when Bret was sitting at ringside studying him.
