As he should be.

Exact same thing I was going to say. What has Shaq done besides gain weight?

Who cares about the NBA popularity contest?

Well, potential doesn't account for much, so I guess it's correct. Shaq is twice the center Ming is. He just hasn't got anything left to shoot for.

Yet another reason why the NBA is more of a circus than a professional sport.

I mean, I like Yao Ming and, as far as I'm concerned, Shaq has little or no skill other than mowing down people and getting away with it. But just because Yao's chipping in with a whopping 17.1 ppg in one month of the season doesn't mean he should be considered the cream of the crop.

But HEY, he's tall, he's kooky, and he might as well be Lurch in hi-tops! Cash mon-ay!

Yes, but Yao's 17 ppg puts him amongst the top centers in the league. The NBA is pretty sorry, nowadays.

Ah...Give The Rookie a break. Remember Shaq's Rookie Year ? He was

ahead of Patrick Ewing in the Voting.

It's Yao Ming's time to shine...

By the way, Vince Carter is the Leading Vote Getter. What has he done all season, besides sit out. But then hard-working Players like Richard Jefferson, Gary Payton, Steve Francis, etc.... get nothing.

Vince is top vote getter? Hahahaha. That is exactly why fans should never get to vote for All-Star games.

If Payton isn't in, that is horseshit. He's been awesome this year.

I guess you missed the whole "one month of the season" deal I was talking about...but hey.

And, while we're talking about him, Vince Carter may be the single most overrated player in NBA history.

If Vince is healthy he is a solid player. He takes jump shots too much when he should take it to the rack but hey whatever.

Harold Miner was overrated. Remember when everyone was calling him "Baby Jordan"?

Of course Kobe will be #1, since all the other great shooting guards (Iverson, McGrady, Carter, etc.) are in the East.

Didn't Rockets fans boo Houston because they picked Robert Horry instead of Harold Minor in the draft?

I agree with that. Vince doesn't even try to play defense. That's the sign of a great player, because anyone who shoots the ball enough can put up 20+ a night.

Yao Ming got the votes the same way Ichiro did. They made the All Star ballot available in Mandarin so the Chinese could vote for Yao. At least Ichiro had good enough numbers to be near the top. Shaq averaged twice as many points, more rebounds, and the same number of blocks as Yao Ming.

My original post didn't show up for some weird reason, so I'll ask my question again: Vince and Grant Hill are the top two vote getters among East forwards, but are both hurt. Since Jermaine O'Neal is third, would he get to start because of that, or would the coaches decide?

Jimmy,

According to the Houston Chronicle, an NBA spokesman said that Yao leads Shaq in "paper ballots", which are only available at NBA games and various sporting goods stores in the US. And, seeing as how Houston is still averaging about 28th or 29th in average attendance, it shows that Yao is popular here in the US as well as overseas. That being said, the NBA needs to reconsider how starters are chosen, seeing all the vote getters that are hurt.

Yes, if a player is hurt the coaches choose the replacements. And no coach in the league would be stupid enough NOT to put O'Neal in there over those two guys, hurt or not.

Shaq doesn't deserve to start. He delayed surgery until September, and gained weight in the off season.
