Inside the NFL....

Recommended Posts

Guest NoCalMike

I don't really like the show anymore. It seemed like it has turned into more a traditional show like on all the other networks rather then it's own type of brand. I also cannot stand Bob Costas. He acts all nice to his interview subjects while they are face to face, but after just about every interview, he just trashes them. I prefer Inside the NFL from a few years back, where the emphasis was on the entire NFL not just the top3 teams.

The problem with Inside the NFL is that traveling cancer known as Chris Collinsworth.

I have nothing wrong with the show, but I rarely watch it, because I always forget it is on.

Why all the Collinsworth hate?

He's the best guy on the show with Marino taking up the rear as he seems to be coming into his own this season which is nice to see.

The show was just unbearable when those old goats Dawson and Glanville were out there saying nothing of note and just rambling away, talking about the "goodl times" which no one outside of Kansas City might have cared about.

I do not hate Costas being on the show as he is very intelligent and knows what he is talking about most of the times and I can respect. He's a good topic starter. He fills in the spot that Collinsworth had on Fox's Pre-game show where everyone there would make fun of Collinsworth and he would laugh and take it in stride. Costas doesn't get blasted but he rolls with the jokes and is a good sport about being the jocks punching bag.

Well no shit Al is better than Collinsworth.

But I'm talking about the announcers that didn't do commentary for the 1980 Olympics. I'm talking more along the lines of morons like Theisman or the other ESPN goonies.

Who betta than Collinsworth?

Buck is one of the better announcers in the booth today but he doesn't have the personality to carry a show on his own like Collinsworth could if their was a case of dead air. Joe is good but he is too stoic and needs someone that does have a personality to get Joe to open up.

Buck and Micheals are play by play announcers. Collinsworth is the best color man in the league. He's not afraid to criticize players, and doesn't have to kiss ass like Simms and Dierdorf.

The main problem that Buck has is that he loves himself *way* too much for a play-by-play guy, but he has also worked with guys over the years who love to hear themselves talk non-stop (such as Tim McCarver), so he does not know how to really reign himself in when in the booth with someone else. He's not a great PBP guy, but certainly not as great as either he or Fox think he is. But Buck is passable at what he does and is a good fit for Aikman and Collinsworth.

Collinsworth is simply terrific. He was terrific back in the day in the booth for NBC while he worked there. He was terrific in the pre-game show with Fox. He was terrific carrying those old goats Dawson and Glanville for a decade on HBO, before they finally got rid of them. Now he gets to work with having to carry Costas (who isn't putrid but isn't great) and help draw out Marino (which seems to be working).

From all those years of working with other guys either trying to hog the spotlight (Bradshaw) or having to get their fill (Dawson and Glanville), Chris knows very much how to pick his spots, work with others (even when they're ignoring him or being non-cooperative and try to squash what he says), set them up, and make his mark. Despite looking young for someone his age, Collinsworth is a seasoned pro with more than a decade under his belt.

This has helped Aikman tremendously who has finally seemed to get out of his shell where he was teamed with his buddy Johnson who carried most of the color work without making Troy look bad. Buck and Chris have gotten a good deal out of Aikman this year, especially as the season winds down now. Troy seems comfortable now by chiming in a good deal when a discussion arises and Chris gives him a ton of room by not feeling the need to chime in all the time.

Chris is probably good enough to be in a two-man booth but the three-man booth is the perfect setting for him.

I don't think Aikman will ever be interesting/provocative enough to be a solo-color guy on a number one announce team. But with Buck and Chris, you have a team that could be the anchor team for Fox for the next decade that could be a real winner in the long run.

Why did they replace Collinsworth with Jimmy Johnson on Fox? I can't stand Johnson.
