Guest Mole Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Well, I believe the show's year right now is 1979. If they have a season next year, it will be 1980. It will no longer be the 70's anymore. What are they going to do? Cancel the show? Call it "That 80's Show"? Or just go along like it is nothing? And yes, I know they had That 80's Show, and it was actually funny in my opinion. But that isn't the point. What do you think fellas?
Guest red_file Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 It's something like this which makes you wonder how long those who created a show expected it to survive. If the gimmick can be outgrown, are the producers expecting it to get cancelled before it does so? Of course, the name of the show does not necessarily have to be descriptive of the time period it is in. Fex, the New Kids on the Block would've remained the New Kids regardless of how long they managed to stay around. So they could go with something like that; i.e. the ethos of the show will always be stuck in the 70s, so it will always be That 70s Shwo. Or they might pull a Simpsons and put the brakes on time. I've never actually watched the show with any consistency, as it conflicts with Buffy, but what I managed to catch I enjoyed. And I too liked That 80s Show for the brief period it was on.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 I'm a fan of That 70s Show, but it's really started to get bad now. I hope they will pull the plug before any decsions about the onset of the 80s have to be made. And for the record, if they changed the name, or pretended it wasn't the 80s when the time came, that would be pretty stupid.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 I kinda liked That 80s Show...but they seemed to know they weren't going to be around long, used up a lot of jokes real quick and progressed the relationship with the main guy and girl way too quick. The dad and record shop owner were given the best lines, and the lesbian ex didn't ever do/say anything remotly funny. The only thing that really bugged me was the canned laughter for ANY 80s reference or joke about the times that weren't funny. Oh, that's 70s show They probably should end it after this season, it's still alright. But the guys are getting too old to play their parts now. And better to end it before it starts sucking like Drew Carey did a few years ago.
Guest dreamer420 Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 I am hoping they end the show this year. Hopefully Eric and Donna will get married, as will Jackie and Kelso (it has to happen), Fez will get a piece of ass, and Hyde will get hiiiiigh on the final episode.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 I think they should end it, be it this season or next season, with a New Year's Eve party into 1980. Make it an hour long, and have every character return (even Midge). Donna and Eric have their wedding plans, Hyde and Jackie break up, Fez tells us all where he's from (watch it be from Michigan instead of some foreign country), and Kelso decides to be a janitor. ...oh, and you NEED Chong in there at the VERY end to say "What a long, strange trip it's been, man."
Guest RevEvil Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 The show's been renewed for two more seasons.
Guest Mole Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Well, then since it has been renewed for two more seasons, I am interested to see what happens with the show. I don't watch it anymore, Buffy is the show I watch now.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 I thought they knew what they were doing when they had Fez jump the shark... I can't think of one show, save Seinfeld, that went off the air when it should have, instead of when it had to.
Guest Jack Tunney Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Well,1980 was still a very 70's-ish year.Kind of like how in 2000 and 2001 it was still in late 90's mode.So maybe the name wont matter. Then again I dont even watch the show.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 WHos's to say they won't just stay in 1979 the remainder of the show? It's not like they have compelling storylines that would make they date the show.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 The thing about the show is this (and I'll admit I stopped watching after the third season), it doesn't really matter that they're in the 70s, they could be in any time period and have the same show. They kind of shot themselves in the foot by calling it That 70s Show, when eventually it wouldn't be the 70s anymore. I was just hoping they'd cancel the show cause it's time for them to move on, it's not very good anymore.
Guest ShooterJay Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 They probably should have started the show sometime in 1973 or '74 so they could have delayed this problem for a few extra years. Instead they started in 1976, only a 4-year shelf life.

Guest Some Guy Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 I was watching Rambo III yesterday and the guy who plays Red is in it. I kept waiting for him to call Rambo a "dumbass" but it never happened, much to my disappointment. I like the show and hope it sticks around for a while, although the jokes are getting played out somewhat.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Whenever I watch That 70s Show, I'm always waiting for Red to spit blood and say "Just give me my fucking phone call." (my favorite line from Robocop)
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 ...or start yelling "I work for Dick Jones...DICK JONES!" See, I like the original title for the show, "Teenage Wasteland," better than "That 70's Show" because it not only gives you a nice twist ("Teenage Wasteland" sounds like it would be a drama to me), but it could also last longer than the 70's. I stand by my idea for the last episode.
Guest Mr. Slim Citrus Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 I like the show; I think that Topher Grace and Kurtwood Smith have great comedic timing; their banter never gets tired to me. That, and I could sit and look at Laura Prepon all day long. Redheads > *.*
