Guest imajackoff? Report post Posted January 6, 2003 I was just looking up John Hughes on IMDB because I was curious what he had been doing. I figured he had been doing more producing than writing or directing, hence the less publicity. Turns out I was right, but he's produced mostly POO. He's made films I've never heard of (New Port South (2001)) or retreads and remakes, (Home Alone 3 (1997), Flubber (1997), 101 Dalmations (1996), Miracle on 34th St. (1994)) and so on. Look at the films he wrote and directed during a 5 yr period: Uncle Buck (1989) She's Having a Baby(1988) Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) Weird Science(1985) The Breakfast Club (1985) Sixteen Candles (1984) Sure, none of those are Citizen Kane, but its a pretty damn strong catalog of flicks to have in five years. Throw in writing credits for Vacation (1983), and its hard to think of anyone who had his hand in more memorable films during this period. My question is what the hell happened? Did his way of filmaking just became outdated, or did he just take his money from writing and producing Home Alone (1990) and run?
Guest red_file Report post Posted January 6, 2003 I'd assume burnout. Merely writing seven decent-to-great scripts must've put ungodly strain on the man. Add in the pressure associated with directing them as well. And doesn't he have a producer's credit on a few more films in that time period? It's also entirely possible that he said everything he had to say in that five year period.
Guest Razor Roman Report post Posted January 6, 2003 I don't know for sure, but what may have happened was he started making films for himself, and then grew up and began making films for his kids...

Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted January 7, 2003 Hughes was never a great filmmaker but he did have his share of hits. My guess is he is living large and probably not having to work anymore.
