SUVs torched in act of eco-terrorism

By TODD SPANGLER

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- The Earth Liberation Front is claiming responsibility for a fire at a Pennsylvania auto dealership.

A posting on the group's Web site said the "attack" targeted SUVs in a fight "to remove the profit motive from the killing of the natural environment."

Jugs of gasoline were set ablaze under three vehicles, engulfing them and a nearby car in flames Wednesday at a dealership in Girard, about 110 miles north of Pittsburgh, FBI Special Agent Bob Rudge said. Three other vehicles also had jugs of gasoline set under them but failed to ignite.

"I have no reason to doubt that it's an individual who committed the acts on behalf of the Earth Liberation Front," Rudge said.

The FBI considers the Earth Liberation Front one of the nation's most prolific domestic terrorist organizations. It is thought to be responsible for the 1998 torching of a ski resort in Vail, Colo., considered the most destructive act of eco-terrorism in U.S. history.

ELF is loosely organized. Anyone who carries out an action under the group's guidelines and claims responsibility as part of the organization is considered a member.

ELF's claims of responsibility typically come through its Web site. A manager who did not provide an identity said in an e-mail that the communique about Wednesday's fire came in anonymously, as do all reports of ELF attacks.

Rudge said that communique appeared to be authentic because it included data that hadn't been made public.

I miss when the enviro-terrorists did something more than inconvenience a few people looking for a vehicle.

You're right, they used to do things of actual power or substance. This is just silly.

(breathes sigh of relief that they didn't go after any Mustangs)

Anyways, while the perpetrator/s should obviously be prosecuted to the fullest for what they did, they really don't have enough evidence that the ELF themselves did it. I mean, one could have more information than was made public by simply passing by the site or something.

Also, this might start a new terrorism initative, as environmental terrorists will start to get lumped in the same category as the international ones, and the definition of "terrorist" could be stretched even to include those who simply protest or disrupt business and everyday life in a peaceful manner, such as chaining oneself to a tree or picketing in the middle of a street or something. Will these people also be labeled terrorists? I certainly hope not.

these people are pretty stupid. I would debate against SUVs all day, but never would I go and light a dealership on fire under the disguise of "helping the enviornment" I just hope the "terrorism" label doesn't get stretched like a rubberband.

moronic hypocrites. It's like when they had the IMF protests here last year, to protest damage to the enviroment...they BURNED TIRES releasing god knows how many pollutents in the air, for no purpose other than to cause destruction. I do classify these people as terrorists and they should be found and locked up.

If they were protesting pollution, then go ahead and call them hypocrites. However, the IMF and flaming tires are hardly related.

This incident wasn't really pollutive so much as just destructive though. Were there any injuries to anyone reported?

Who knows, all those destructive hippies are idiots though...

Wonder how big a hole in the Ozone these pseudo-hippies made w/ the burning cars?...

The thing is, by burning the cars up, they're burning the tires, the various fluids in the engine, the paint... all kinds of things that may be harmful to the environment when burned and released into the air. These destructive cretins strike me as similar to the fuckheads to murder abortion doctors in the name of their "pro-life" activism.

Violence is never an effective protest for anything. There are much better ways to lobby for SUV removal than petty vandalism, and friggin LEGAL ones.

1) Point out how our roads can't take the weight

2) Point out how the gas usage causes lots of problems

Too late. The very fact that the article used the word 'terror ist/ism' tell you that the FEAR, INTIMIDATION, DISINFORMATION principal is already in effect. (for a little more detail, see my post on the 'Onion' thread.)

Yeah but that led to war, are the hippies going to go to war against the SUV industry?

You got a point there. NO. The SUV industry would run them over with their oversized monsters.

Groups like ELF are terrorist groups. They place spikes in trees, and loggers have been killed trying to cut down trees.
