Statement on last play of Giants-49ers game

  NFL.com wire reports

•Giants' holder could not have spiked ball

(Jan. 6, 2003) -- The New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers were informed that a defensive pass interference penalty should have been called on the final play of their NFC Wild Card Game.

A videotape review by NFL Director of Officiating Mike Pereira of the final play -- the Giants' 41-yard field goal attempt with six seconds remaining -- determined the following:

Tam Hopkins, No. 65, of the Giants lined up as the left guard and was illegally downfield on the pass attempt. The three flags thrown on this play were for this penalty.

Guard Rich Seubert, No. 69, was an eligible receiver on Giants field-goal attempts. This was reported to the officiating crew prior to the game as is routinely done before every game.

49ers defensive end Chike Okeafor interfered with Seubert downfield when he was attempting to catch Giants holder Matt Allen's pass. This defensive pass-interference penalty against the 49ers was not called.

If defensive pass interference had been called, there would have been offsetting penalties (ineligible receiver against the Giants and pass interference against the 49ers) with the down replayed at the original line of scrimmage, the San Francisco 23-yard line. Although time had expired, a game cannot end with offsetting penalties. Thus, the game would have been extended by one untimed down.

One additional note on the play: Allen did not have the option of spiking the ball to stop the clock, which only can be done by taking a hand-to-hand snap directly from the center. If Allen had spiked the ball, it would have been a penalty for intentionally grounding the ball and the game would have ended due to a 10-second runoff of the clock.

I wouldn't be surprised if some angry Giants fans found out the adresses of all of those refs and take care of business. I wouldn't blame them. So much for New York teams always getting breaks.

Yeah, but I don't feel bad considering NYG shot themselves in the foot so many times in the second half that they ran out of toes...

blah blah two FG tries two melt downs by the kicking team. They didn't deserve the win.

Still, that's incredibly lame. If the game wasn't supposed to end, it shouldn't have ended. And I imagine they wouldn't have missed a third FG attempt there. Poor Giants.

Oh well. There's always next year, right?

Yeah, but the Giants shouldn't of let themselves have the game get that close anyway.

Fuck em, NINERS RULE!!

Whether the game should have been that close or not is irrelevant, they should have been given the opportunity to kick it again according to NFL rules, so that's what should have happened. Referees should not be the ones who decide games.

Even the announcers were calling defensive pass interference. I thought one of the refs would offset the two. NFL = RIGGED~!

Shockey is suppose to be Super Bowl MVP, damnit!

I figured the calls were going to end up with offsetting penalties after the initial call was "inelidgible reciever" and not "pass interference" Even Marriuchi thought that as he hesitated before any type of celebration.

Referees shouldn't decide games.

But, by the same token, you're playing with fire if you allow yourself to slip into a position where one "bad call" can break you and send a season of struggle up in smoke like that.

And the Giants got burned.

Only a fool would put faith in the officials to deliver him or his team. After the way things have been in the NFL the past four years, in particular.

[Of course, my gut feeling is that it isn't going to matter much, really, as I feel the Giants wouldn't be able to pass a rested Tampa Bay in Tampa, and I don't think the 49ers will either. And, in turn, I think it's ultimately the Eagles' year in the NFC anyway and the Bucs themselves won't be able to beat them. I could, of course, be wrong. I'd very much like to be. I have no love for the Buccaneers, you see.]

Side Note: What's the deal with the Giants, anyway? I watched most of that game, and I saw #89 throwing and kicking his helmet on the sidelines, I saw Shockey sulking and tantruming on the sideline in the FIRST QUARTER, and at the end of the game I saw several of their defenders get easily baited into absolutely retarded self-destructive behavior. I have never seen a professional team have a loss of discipline/composure of the magnitude that I saw from the Giants. It was like they turned into children before my eyes. Being "macho" and sticking up for your teammates is one thing. But man. I just can't understand how a team with the very demonstrative Jeremy Shockey on their side can't have enough firsthand experience to recognize and resist comparably antagonistic behavior from Terrell Owens.

But oh well. Fassell will have several months to prepare that lecture. If he isn't stupidly run out of town by the New York/New Jersey media.

It doesn't matter. The Niners came back (second best in NFL history) to win this stunner. The Niners rule!!!! Tampa bay is going to be tough, but we got them. Niners all the way baby!!!! P.S. Shockey sucks, Owens will take the MVP spot or Garica.

Ermm..."Shockey sucks" ??? ok!?! Anyways. yah I think the 49ers have a pretty good shot at taking out the Bucs. The Bucs offense is quite frankly, putrid, with or without Brad Johnson.....BJ just makes it acceptable for the NFL. Tampa Bay's running game is assinine besides Alstott, yet Mikey seems to fumble at a high rate.

The 49ers could run into some trouble with th Bucs D being the monster it is, but the key is for the 49ers to score fast and make Brad Johnson play catch-up.....I predict a close game.

Shockey does not suck. He is, however, a big-headed ROOKIE with an awful lot to learn about playing in the NFL. The Giants were courting the anger of the football gods by celebrating so early, though. Strahan pointing to the scoreboard while taunting Terrell Owens is just classless, and I'm actually glad it came back to bite them in the ass. Had they kept playing their game instead of getting all laid-back and cocky, maybe a bad call by the officials wouldn't have decided things.

It's a shame the NFL has to keep apoligizing for its officiating crews. They should look into quality improvement in the offseason. Still, the Giants lost the game all by themselves; in fact, they spent the 20 minutes before that ill-fated field goal try doing precisely that.

You sound like my mom with a comment like that.

The Giants were up by 24 points, and it should of stayed that way. They blew their chance, and it's their own damn fault.

Besides, it doesn't matter. Game is over, NINERS WON, and that is all that matters.

All you have to do is give someone that is pissed off fuel and you start the fire yourself. The Giants taunted the Niners and it ended up costing them. I remember when the Houston Oilers did the same fucking thing to the Buffalo Bills, and what happened...Bills came back 30+ points to win. Serves any team that gloats before time runs out. But the media will keep covering it because of 2 main reasons: 1. This was a critical call that could have been prevented and 2. because they are all for the New Yorkers. Any sporting event that you watch that has a New York team playing, the announcers and media don't give a shit about the other team and the tend to shift focus to the New Yorkers. If you don't believe that is true, watch and listen for yourself. They really act like we give a damn, and although some of us may, their opinions are heavily lopsided. All I have seen on TV these past 2 days are how the Giants were screwed, hell the refs could have caused the bad call...but the Giants are the ones that blew the game. If you get lazy, you will lose...that is the first thing they teach you in any sport.

There ain't nothing wrong with that.

I mean, if you can back it up.. why not? He beat Brian Dawkins who is a Pro Bowl CB and did pretty good against Peterson who is also a Pro Bowl LB.

Without Shockey's attitude and what he brought to NY, I don't believe they would have even made it to the playoffs.

Let's see if he backs it up next year when defenses will focus on him more.

And Shockey need only look at his worthless teammate Michael Strahan for an example of someone who can't back up his taunting. Yeah, good idea to point the score out to Terrell Owens like that. Maybe if Strahan hadn't spent the game getting pushed around like a sack of packing peanuts -- after playing like shit the whole year with his fat new contract -- then maybe I wouldn't be so harsh on him. But he taunted the other team while doing dick to help his own team win, so fuck him.

I find it hilarious that he's starting right next to Sapp in the pro-bowl.

Remember, too, that these officials were the BEST at what they do, since they got to go to the playoffs.

So do I, but in a sad way. This one can't even be blamed on the fans, since the players themselves pick the Pro Bowl squads. Obviously, reputations are more important among the players than actual production.
