How it is to be a Swedish wrestling fan

Ever since October of 1993, I have been a BIG fan of professional wrestling, and more exactly the WWF. A TV station called TV1000 started to show WWF in 1992, but I didn't start to watch until they started to show it on TV3, in October of ´93.

I followed the WWF for about six month, until the WWF had enough of our Swedish commentators (they didn't pretend that wrestling was real, and did shoot quite a lot) and cancelled the deal. TV3 started to show WCW instead, and although it had some great wrestlers like Stunning Steve Austin, Dustin Rhodes, Sting and Ric Flair, it just wasn't the same. I bought WWFs magazines a couple of years, and bought them every month until 1999, when I started to surf the net, and got to the news and results way faster (and cheaper).

In 1996, WCW had enough of TV3 like the WWF (although both WCW and the WWF hade great ratings here) so the only thing that remained for us Swedish wrestling fans, was to watch wrestling on Eurosport. They showed ONE WWF show over and over and over again, with only jobbermatches. And then they started to show some bad wrestling from Japan, with Hellraisers, Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake, that not exactly did set my world on fire.

And after about three month, Eurosport stopped showing wrestling altogether.

I still bought the WWF Mag., just because that was my only way of keeping touch with wrestling. That's right, between Royal Rumble 94 and Summerslam 96, I didn't see ANY wrestling AT ALL. Well, I DID see wrestling, but that was my old tapes and not new stuff.

It was a German channel that showed Summerslam 96, and they did show all the Big Five PPVs, and all the RAWs. Well, although they DID show wrestling, it sucked because they chopped the shows so badly, that some matches and/or interviews was cut straight off. And because I can't speak German, and just understands a couple of words, I didn't get so much out of watching it. But I did. Why? Because I love wrestling! And I didn't even have the network that showed it, so I had to ask friends to record it for me.

DSF (as the network was called) stopped showing wrestling in 1997, and since then the ONLY way for me to watch it, is by buying tapes. So since 1997, ALL the wrestling I have seen has been on tape. RAWs, SmackDowns, WWF PPVs, Nitros, Thunders, WCW PPVs, ECW PPVs etc.

What's my point? Well, you can at least watch wrestling without having to buy RAWs for 6 bucks a piece.

European wrestling fans surprise me.I thought most people there would think wrestling is for stupid Americans or something.

Well, I would believe that that´s the case for most of us, but there ARE a pretty big number of hardcore fans, like myself.

They put WCW between Power Rangers and cartoons at 9.30 on Sunday mornings and wondered why they could´nt get adults to watch. ;)

Here in England we get too much WWE. Shit's on everyday I think and sometimes more than once a day.

We get too much WWE but not enough wrestling, no TNA. Hopefully FWA will get a show over here soon, as rumours say.

On the upside though, we're getting NWA WorldWide shows from 1990. NOSTALGIA~!

I hear you man, as another swedish wrestling fan who started watching at around the same time.

However, since I got the british feed for TNT I still got to watch Nitro from mid 1996 until sometime after the fingerpoke of doom. And I also remember EuroSport showing loads of cool wrestling featuring Benoit, Malenko, Liger, Chono, Hashimoto, Hase, Ultimo Dragon and a bunch of others (although this was probably earlier, around 94-95).

I really miss recordTV, as I used that for about half of 2000 to record all WWF programming for me so that I could watch it.
