I GOT A 1356 on my PSAT's!

Recommended Posts

Guest TheZsaszHorsemen

For those who don't know, the PSAT's are given to High School juniors to determine who gets the National Merit Scholarship. They're like practice SAT's. I got back the results today: I got a 70 out of 80 in Verbal Skills,(Better than 98% of other Juniors) a 66 out of 80 in Math, (Better than90% of other Juniors) and a 67 out of 80 in Writing Skills.(91%) My national percentil was better than 97% of college-bound Juniors!

I'm so glad.

Pretty good. I don't think you'll make national merit, though. Cut-off was 212 in my day, and I don't think it's dropped that much over 3 years.

Of course, barely any schools pay out national merit anyway, the bastards...

He should get a very good score on the real one. I myself only got a 1230, since my math skills are literally THAT BAD. I had a 730 in verbal and only a 500 in math. On the real deal, it was a little better, with a 720 on Verbal and 520 on Math.

Let's see how you do on the real thing

Can't you let me happy for one day?

Oh, and I can't wait for the SAT's. I love standardized tests.

If I knew what all the scores meant I'm sure I'd be more impressed, but nonetheless, Congratualtions.

Showoff.

I only got a 1210 on the real thing, 610 verbal, 600 math despite not knowing geometry at all.

But if that can get into college, you should be fine.

Okay- go ahead and be happy.

It's just that PSATs are pretty meaningless in the long run

I don't even remember what I got on my PSAT. Probably 1130 or something. I got a 1290 on the SAT, which kind of pissed me off. Only 10 points away from 1300. Grr....

Keep in mind that it's still really easy to piss away a college education. PSATs ain't shit.

I know the PSAT's arn't crucial, but they are practice for the real thing, so this is very encouraging to me.

I didn't want to brag in front of my friends who didn't do so well, so I came here.

We have a serious handicap here in Hawaii. Average SAT score here is about 750, I believe. Students in most places here are asked to learn 2 languages fluently (American English, "Hawaiian"), while pidgin is used in extraordinary amounts.

On my first SAT test (at the end of Junior year), I got a 1210 (610 Verbal, 600 Math), which is like in the 90th percentile in the state of Hawaii. My study habits sucked, though, so I could've reached higher.

And fuck, I hated those "sentence analyzation" problems. Not the analogies, but after that. I missed 12 of those.

EDIT: My mistake. I mistook the national average as a higher number.

I made a 930, I think. Mind, this was after being out of school for two years, having dropped out in tenth grade, without having studied very much at all.

I did really well in Verbal, but Math ate me alive. I hate math. With a passion.

Still going to a University in the fall, though. If I can do it, anyone can.

Zsasz, you're shitting me. 800 as a national average?

Suddenly I want education reform.

That's what my Theology teacher told us today.

He's up-to-date on all these things, so I believe him.

There's NO WAY 800 is the average, right?

Well, I thought it was 950, and that I remembered hearing on the local news, that Hawaii was 50 points below the national average.

So Hawaii's average is 750, I guess.

I don't want to be perceived as arrogant for saying this, but here goes:

I TOTALLY believe it, considering how my score was regarded as mythic, and I didn't think it was *that* great.

Here's a relatively recent article about Hawaii & the national average (which looks like it's closer to the 1000 range):

http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/...7/br/br01p.html

Hardly surprising to me; I knew the second I stepped off the plane that most of these people are fucking stupid (no offense bravesfan; present company excepted).

But, as I've said before, I'm biased...

Nationally, males also outscored females in verbal 504 to 498, and in math 531 to 496.

That puts the national average at a little over a thousand, with which I am much more comfortable.

Slim, even in a biased opinion, you see how Hawaii's children are severely disadvantaged. You have a much better chance of explaining it to everyone here than I do, though.

All I know is, we are BELOW the national average. I questioned the national average being that low, for good reason. The entire nation can't be THAT stupid. The math average here is adequate, but our verbal scores are hideously bad.

Bah. No offense taken at all, Slim. Take shots at Hawaii all you want, honestly, because I found my personal experiences to be laden with dumbshits anyway.

You score an 1100 or better here, and you're looked upon as a "tourist".

See, now I would think that learning a second language would increase your verbal skills. Although, I have no clue--and now, probably doubt--if the "Hawaiian" you're talking about is at all derived from the same Romantic origins as English. That I could see as damaging.

I actually did much much worse on my PSAT than on the real thing. I think there was a 200 point difference, which is funny because I studied for the PSAT and didn't for the real thing.

EDIT: I GOT 4.4247787610619469026548672566372 TIMES YOUR SCORE JUST TALKING ABOUT MY PSAT'S~!

Man, it's been so long that I don't even know what I made when I took either test. I know both of my ACT scores and that's about it.

The SAT is the other major standardized test. I believe it's similar to the SAT, but also with an additional science component. Never took it myself, as I was happy with verbal-mathy madness. Most schools accept the ACT as an alternative to the SAT, and some people do better on one or the other.
