Guest AlwaysPissedOff Report post Posted January 8, 2003 It's a test you take either as a senior or after you graduate(at least, I think so). The most you can get on it is a 36 which is a composite of either 4 or 5 tests on different subjects. Highest I got was a 24 with a 31 in read comprehension. Guest The Hamburglar Report post Posted January 8, 2003 Oh, you wacky Americans. Out of interest, what the fuck are the SATs? How do they work? Are they multiple choice? Cuz that'd be cool. Over here in Britain we merely have good ol' GCSEs and A-Levels, broken up into a qualification for each subject. I will cease to explain it, as the whole system is complex and boring. Suffice it to say I battered it in and achieved ULTIMATE marks. Yet Oxford still rejected me. Bastards. Cos I'm Irish. Its a shit-hole town though. I wanted to stab my eyes out when I went up for interview. I like Ritter Sport chocolate, yum yum.

Guest The Superstar Report post Posted January 9, 2003 I got a 1050 last year (8th grade). Which is really funny considering my sister, who's a senior, got a 1020 on the REAL THING. I guess I know where all the genes went.
Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted January 9, 2003 I got a 1420 on my SAT when I took it in the winter of my senior year. I had never taken a practice SAT or the PSAT (which I felt were all a waste of my time). I wish you luck on your SAT Mr.Z
Guest cobainwasmurdered Report post Posted January 9, 2003 For those who don't know, the PSAT's are given to High School juniors to determine who gets the National Merit Scholarship. They're like practice SAT's. I got back the results today: I got a 70 out of 80 in Verbal Skills,(Better than 98% of other Juniors) a 66 out of 80 in Math, (Better than90% of other Juniors) and a 67 out of 80 in Writing Skills.(91%) My national percentil was better than 97% of college-bound Juniors! I'm so glad. Proof that the SAT's don't mean shit.

Guest subliminal_animal Report post Posted January 9, 2003 Since cobainwasmurdered brought it up, I'd also like to say that Mr. Zsasz usually rubs me a bit in the wrong direction. I can't pinpoint why, though. I got a 2000 on my SATs. A beyond-perfect 1700 normally, plus the extra 200 they gave me for being beautiful, plus the extra 100 I got when I wrote over my score with a pen.

Suffice it to say I battered it in and achieved ULTIMATE marks. Yet Oxford still rejected me. Bastards. Cos I'm Irish. Yea, Hamburglar, the SAT's are multiple choice. They're also one of the leading factors in getting into a desire college in the U.S. It's English and Math stuff, although there's also the SAT II (of which the importance has been pressed a lot in recent years, I had to take it to get into the University of California system, and I think a high score on that is actually more favored than a high SAT score) now, which is still multiple choice (although I think there was a writing component as well, can't remember), but more specific on certain topics. Then on top of THAT there's the AP test, which is multiple choice and writing on even more specific topics, like U.S. history, physics, etc. It's all a mess, and it's all run by the same company, who wants nothing but your money. C'mon... America's youth are exploited enough already! That's why it warms my heart to see that some school systems (such as my UC system) are debating whether or not to stop using the SAT as a factor in admissions because, frankly, it's so vague that it doesn't prove a damn thing about intelligence or school abilities. Unfortunately, they will continue to use SAT II, and probably place more importance on that for the time being, but reform has to start somewhere... Sucks about the Oxford rejection. Bastards. Guest Gimmick Poster.com Report post Posted January 9, 2003 No way. High School GPA's should be done away with. A good SAT score in the 1400's is a good possibillity for me. A good GPA is not. The SAT should be stressed OVER the GPA IMO.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted January 9, 2003 I don't remember when I got on the PSAT. Hell, it's been... more years than I care to admit right now. I know I was in the 99th percentile, because (not trying to be a braggart here) I always tested into the 99th percentile. I got a 1390 on the SAT itself, and a little over 1000 when I took it in seventh grade. Heck, I wish I could have taken it a few years later. Calculators allowed, plus essay questions... I would have 0wned.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted January 9, 2003 They allow calculators now? You're kidding me... they didn't when I took it, which is why I skipped about a third of the math questions. I can do that stuff, just not without a calculator in a 45-minute period.

Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted January 9, 2003 Standardized tests are my bitch. I took the PSAT's drunk as a skunk from the night before, and got a 121 out of 180, which you add a zero to and it's supposed to give a projection of what you'll get on the real deal, so 1210's not bad. When I actually took the thing after not sleeping the night before, I got a 1260, with 630 on both parts. I found that pretty strange because I'm much better at math, generally. I thought about taking them again, because I know I can do better, but the 1260 and my schedule in high school got me into the college I wanted to go to, so I didn't bother with it any further. On all the tests throughout elementary school, I always got in the 99th percentile. The department of education salivates when they see my scan-tron sheet. Guest RobJohnstone Report post Posted January 9, 2003 blah! I only got a 1050 on my sat's but, I took em 2 years after HS(Just recently). Should be enough to get me into penn state though, next winter. --Rob
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted January 9, 2003 How'd you figure 1356? This caught my attention. See, in our school we don't get them back, per se. A guidance counselor shows them to us and files them away. After I posted this I told someone my score, and he said: "Scores only come in multiples of 10." I went to see the GC again, and sure enough I had copied my score wrong. I got a 1350. What's the line: "the smart ones don't have any common sense"? I'd say it's true in this case. Guest Army Eye Report post Posted January 9, 2003 Let's see how you do on the real thing err.. the PSAT and SAT are basically the same difficulty, at least when I took them. If anything he'll probably do better on the SAT, since it won't be a new experience.
Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted January 10, 2003 I was so pissed when the teacher that was hosting the SAT deal would not allow my class to use calculatots for the math section. Turns out every other class did get to use calculators while the senile bitch we had still thought it was 1956 or something. The reading section where they had you read stories that were about a page or so long was *fucking* death. I had taken my SAT at 7 in the morning and I was so not ready to read that dribble and not fall asleep. Fucking death.

Guest Kinetic Report post Posted January 10, 2003 I have my SAT scores right in front of me, actually. I like to pore over them every few months, in a vain attempt to pinpoint where my life went so horribly wrong. I got a 1080, with a thoroughly respectable 640 verbal and an absolutely humiliating 440 math. I didn't study for it once and really didn't pay it much mind at all. I'm joining the military next month. Pay attention in school, kids.
