Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted January 9, 2003 It's Elvis Presley's birthday, so let's talk about him. What do you think of him? Is the younger generation still aware of him and what he did in music? Is the younger generation still grooving on him? What is the King's legacy to you. Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted January 9, 2003 Well, I'm not knowledgeable by any means, but bah gawd he was a showman. I just spent about an hour discussing him with my passed out drunk friend's dad, who knows everything about him. We watched a show from around 72, during which I was surprised at how good he looked. His voice wasn't the same of course, but he still had the magic. I'll alwyas love suspicious minds. Happy birthday to the king.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted January 9, 2003 Is it just me or does it seem like he has a birthday every month? No, every other month. It feels like one month is his birthday, the next month is the anniversary of his death, then his birthday, anniversary, on and on and on. I never have gotten why they make such a huge deal out of his death. Every year all these people go to Graceland and celebrate somebody dying on a toilet. Why not do that for his birthday instead? Not for his death. His death kinda sucked didn't it? And the last one was just crazy. Maybe it's worse because I live in Tennessee but it seemed like for the whole month it was non-stop Elvis everywhere, every TV channel, every radio channel. It was numbing. Of course the question is still...skinny Elvis or fat Elvis. I'll take big fat funky 70's Elvis all the way. Aloha from Hawaii and all those Vegas shows. Now that's Elvis. Big belt buckle, rhinestones and C.C. Rider. Lots of horn sections and lots of wah guitar. Skinny Elvis was a poon tang compared to the funked out 70's Elvis. Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted January 9, 2003 I too prefer 70's fat, funky Elvis. Not only does he have more raw emotion in his singing and a complex life, but there is just this underlining macho cool. The special you saw Saturnmark was most likely That's the Way it Is that was on TCM tonight. That is a very good concet film. Elvis didn't really start getting fat and out of sorts until around 1975. Suspcious Minds is my second favorite song overall of all time.

Man, I feel the same way...seems like it's going on all the time. is Elvis our most beloved over the top drug abuser? In his early days he was blasted cause he'd wiggle his hips...years later after destroying his life with drugs we praise him. Funny world we live in.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted January 9, 2003 You can say the same of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, tons of people who died of drug abuse and others who died of nefarious means such as Kurt Cobain's suicide and Karen Carpenter's anorexia. We glorify these people who die at their own hand, because it's sexy in a sick way and it looks better to flame out than fade away. I don't want to get into the whole psychological aspects of it, but the phenomenon of which you speak is not exclusive to Elvis.

Hendrix and Morrison don't get the media attention EVERY year for their birth or death...and if The Kings ends in a 5 or a 0 it's a landmark year and even blown up bigger. I am even more tired about having to hear about Kurt Cobain...if Eddie Vedder would have blown his brains out instead we would be talking about Pearl Jam, and MTV would call Jeremy the greatest video ever, like they do with Smells Like
Guest meanmaisch Report post Posted January 9, 2003 Elvis was also an honorary DEA agent, an honor given to him by Nixon. This was at the same time he was popping pills like crazy.
