I think it would be more humiliating for a team to completely stop shooting, or stop trying their hardest, than to get shelled so bad. The Panther announcers, (I watched the game on TV) Jeff Rimer and Denis Potvin were trying to pass it off as the Panthers were tired from traveling the night before. They "didn't get into the hotel in Washington until 330AM." Uh, yeah, but the game didn't start until about 7PM! Did they stay up all night having a slumber party or something? Jesus Christ! I think their passing percentage was around 15%, it seemed everytime they passed the puck, a Capital was right there, and had a scoring chance. Here's the article from ESPN.com : WASHINGTON -- Florida Panthers owner Alan Cohen criticized the Washington Capitals and coach Bruce Cassidy for their record-setting 12-2 rout of his team Saturday night. "You can be sure that if we were ever able to get a 6-0 lead, the Panthers will act with more class than has been shown by the Capitals and their coach," Cohen wrote in an e-mail to The Sun-Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale. Capitals winger Jaromir Jagr had three goals and four assists, matching a career-high with seven points. Washington led 4-0 after one period and 9-0 after two en route to its biggest offensive night since a 12-2 victory over Quebec on Feb. 6, 1990. "Most of these Florida players will be around a long time," Cohen wrote. "It doesn't matter who wears a Washington uniform. We'll never forget." Cassidy, however, rested Jagr for most of the third period -- even though Jagr was one point away from setting a career high for points. Six Capitals forwards logged more ice time than Jagr, who played 14:05. "That's honorable," Cassidy said. "Good for (Jagr) for not putting personal goals ahead of the team." "I know how it feels to be on the other side," Jagr said. "It's not easy to be down 10-0." Panthers coach Mike Keenan didn't criticize Cassidy following the game -- though he hadn't read his owner's e-mail, either. Guest treble charged Report post Posted January 12, 2003 No. This whole thing is complete bullshit. You CAN'T let up, because where do you draw the line? How big of a lead is too big? I mean, say you draw the line at 5 goals in the 3rd period, so you just go into sleepwalk mode, and the other team comes back while you're trying to let them have it easy to tie it or take the lead. It seems like that's what the Caps kind of did (I think Jagr was barely on the ice) but they still put four more goals up. Guest gthureson Report post Posted January 13, 2003 Hell, I would have tried for 15 if I was Bruce Cassidy. I would have kept rolling my lines and tried to bury them as far as I could. The Panthers have long memories? Good. The first thing they'll remember next time they play is, "Good god, this team hammered us last time." This ain't a beer league or pee wee hockey.
