Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted January 13, 2003 Not only did Black Flag help pioneer hardcore(the punk and the more metal type). Along with Flipper and The Melvins, Black Flag also played a huge role in influencing what later would be known as the Grunge and modern Sludge Metal movement. So in short they had a much bigger influence on mainstream alternative artists than U2. Alternative rock was already around throughout most of the 80s, though it either fell into hardcore, postpunk, or college rock category. This isn't relevant at all, but Melvins > U2 by about 10,000,000 notches. Thankyou. More relevant, I actually think Bono doing all this aid work (if he 'follows through') is the ONLY upside to the most mediocre band this side of coldplay. Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted January 13, 2003 Has anyone checked out GINN or DOS, or any of the other post-Flag bands that formed when BF finally disbanded? I'm curious if they're any good and worth checking out.
Guest JangoFett4Hire Report post Posted January 13, 2003 Do the Circle Jerks count? Dez Cadena 3 is really good, but not what you'd expect... very classic rockish
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted January 13, 2003 Rank of Black Flag Singers: Keith Morris (Goldstein) Dez Cadena Henry GARFIELD Chavo (Ron Reyes) No, they're ranked like this: Chavo > Johnny Bob Goldstein (Keith Morris) > Rollins > Dez And to settle the Black Flag discussion. Granted that Greg Ginn was the real genius behind Black Flag, and that the band deteriorated as Rollins influence rose. However to give the man his due, Damaged would have been a nice yet inessential album were it not for Rollins. It was Rollins hoarse, throat-bleeding screams and his intense howling long after his voice has given out that made that album, as he sounded like some sort of lunatic who has finally snapped and is a danger to both himself and others. I've never heard another album capture such hopeless, self-loathing, anger, and depression so well, and mostly that's due to Rollins' vocal performance, I believe. That was the one bright moment upon which he and his overrated career have been living off of ever since. On everything after that album, as Mark Prindle once so aptly put it, Rollins just sounds like a pissed off jock.
Guest JangoFett4Hire Report post Posted January 13, 2003 What? Chavo first? It's not my imagination, I've got a gun in my back!!! For further proof of Rollins' overratedness, listen to Black Flag's "in My Head" CD, specifically "I Can See You" profound lyrics...
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted January 14, 2003 "Goldstein" > Dez > Chavo > Rollins ... I just don't like Henry Garfield. He was just in the right place at the right time to me. And as I've already said, F him for screwing over SOA. Rollins put out good music with Black Flag, yes, but ANYONE would have sounded dope on those albums ... they were good despite him, not because of him. Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted January 14, 2003 I'll never understand how someone can rank Dez above Rollins. Listening to his work on the ep's that comprise the First Four Years and comparing them to what Rollins did with the same songs, it seems almost retardedly obvious which one is better. Meanwhile, while "Goldstein" did some nice work with the Circle Jerks, His vocals while with Black Flag were nothing special. He sounds like a 14 year old kid doing a Johnny Rotten impersonation. And if you've seen The Decline of the Western Civilization, then you know that Chavo fucking owned all of them.
