The ever illusive Giant Gonzales

I've looked everywhere on the internet for any shred of legitimate info on Giant Gonzales/El Gigante but all I find is hate sites and the same two pictures over and over again. I realize that he was a poor wrestler but is there some kind of conspiracy trying to keep everything about him a secret? Anyone with any information or more preferably pictures of the worlds tallest wrestler is greatly appreciated.

Believe me, Giant Gonzalez is widely regarded as the worst wrestler ever for a reason. His entire WWF career was in 1993. He was around in WCW for some time before that as El Gigante. He can't do anything. Not one single wrestling maneuver. He's really tall, and his matches consist of him lumbering about and choking people.

From what I remember reading about him or hearing about him from somewhere, Gonzalez was brought to the US to try out for the Atlanta Hawks. He was a star in his native Argentina, but by the time he made it to the US his knees were shot. Ted Turner, who owned the Hawks at that time, didn't want to totally waste his investment and sent him to WCW, thinking they could do something with him. They really couldn't, but that didn't stop him from getting a job with the WWF after WCW released him, based on McMahon's insane ego in wanting the world's biggest athlete after the death of Andre the Giant. Gonzalez returned to Argentina to care for a sick relative (I want to say mother, maybe sister) and is currently retired and living in his native land. Try checking the Ask 411 archives, I think that's where I read this.

Gonzalez wasn't very good worker and was only doing this to support his family in Argentina. By all accounts he was a fairly nice guy that was popular backstage but Since he didn't have an upshot aside for 3 months in WWF he didn't last long, the only thing of his career was Wrestle War 1991 when he came to Pillman's rescue.

He was awful in the ring but I admit to being in awe of his size and his costume when he faced the Undertaker at a Wrestlemania. Back then I didn't care about workrate so I marked out for the match.

Gonzalez also had a part on Baywatch a short time after his WWF stint IIRC. He played some freak under the pier who carved Pelicans out of driftwood and befriended Hasselhoff's kid. It was a long time ago so I don't remember the episode too well.

I have no idea why I'm doing this, but oh well. Giant Gonzales/El Gigante was not a great worker, and was only brought in because of his size, I will not get into this any more as everyone else has covered it. His real name is Jorge Gonzales I do believe and he was said to be 8 feet tall and over 400 pounds by the WWF, when in reality he was "only" around 7'5-7'7 and within the 300 pound range. He is now living in his homelands, taking care of his family's ranch type deal and is very happy doing so the last I heard on him. It must be said that he was known as one hell of a guy, but simply didn't have his heart set on Pro. Wretling. That had to do with him not being any good in the ring, along with his size.

It's also said that they paired him with Harvey Whippleman simply becase Harvey was so small, and in interviews and the such, it would make Gonzales look to be that much larger, and it worked. Just look at him in the pictures with Harvey, in my post after this one. I actually enjoyed seeing this guy in the ring, as I was only 12-13 years old when he was around, and I marked out for his huge size, I mean really, he was about half a foot or more, taller than Andre the Giant. This was before I really understood workrate and the such, so don't laugh at me. Anyhow...

...here are some pictures I have of him. All of these are under his Giant Gonzales charater, if you want some of the others just let me know...

Wow, Downhome, you're a lifesaver and my favorite poster besides myself now. You helped my out so much. And yes I would like to see some of Jorge as El Gigante if you wouldn't mind. Thanks a lot man.

He was over in Japan.

When WCW ran a Starcade show with New Japan he got a huge "OHHHHHHHH" when he came out.

But he sucked pretty hard

God...looking at those pics I had forgotten how bad his costume was.

Were the people suppose to think "MY GOD! That man hair hair EVERYWHERE! And look at those muscles!"

I can't find those right now, I think I deleted them from my computer. I do have this one of him from 1990 however...

I know he made his first appearance at Capitol Combat '90 during the main event of Flair v. Luger. This is the card most noteworthy because it featured an appearance by Robocop. Now there's some wrestlecrap. BTW, Flair v. Luger was the HHH v. Jericho of its day. Talk about destroying someones credibility.

That tape is worth owning just to see the 4 Horsemen run from Robocop...after he RIPS the door of Sting's cage

Don't forget, he made it on one of Hogan's "Blunder in Paradise" episodes in 94.

...My bad, it was "Baywatch" (one had Hogan, the other had boobs).

He played a really tall guy...who I think worked in a circus (ironic, huh?).

I just went over to IMDB and did a search, and it listed the following as him being in...

1) Hercules in the Underworld (1994) (TV) .... Eryz the Boxer

2) Delivery Boys (1984) .... Big Shot #2

3) "Thunder in Paradise" (1994) playing "Sealed With A Kismet (Thunder In Paradise II - Feature Version)"

4) "Baywatch" (1989) playing "Manny" (as Jorge "Giant" Gonzalez) in episode: "Blindside" (episode # 4.4) 4 October 1993

...then it listed RAW, and the PPV's he was on, but that's obvious I suppose, lol.

I remember marking out big time when he came out and attacked Undertaker at the Royal Rumble 1993! Now I see what an idiot I was. ;)

Yeah, especially considering the barnburners it led to at WM IX and 93 Summerslam.
