Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted January 17, 2003 Okay, I'm looking to buy a router for my computer, and I was wondering what are the advantages to actually by a router (obviously this works great for X-Box live), other than that, do they need to be installed to the computer at all or no? Guest MrRant Report post Posted January 17, 2003 Some Pros 1. Multiple connections 2. Hardware firewall 3. Ability to assign static IP's behind the router. 4. You can buy a good router (not wireless) for around 40-50 bucks and a wireless for around 70-100 (with rebates).
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted January 17, 2003 is there anything wrong with routers then?
Guest MrRant Report post Posted January 18, 2003 Not really. You will have to do some port configuring for some stuff (online games etc) possibly and that can be a little pain.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted January 18, 2003 but if I don't play online games, it should run smooth with X-Box live going through, right?
Guest Hayabusa Moleman Report post Posted January 18, 2003 I use a router with my xbox live, runs perfectly fine. I didn't need to do any configurations, but your experience may be different. Try to confirm the router you purchase is xbox compatible (along with any other systems you own if you plan on going online with them eventually.) It's rare, but a few routers are not compatible or fully compatible. For instance, the router I own isn't compatible with voice chat on the Playstation 2, but that means junk to me since I don't have a ps2. The xbox live chat works fine, so I am happy. Also, if by chance you'll be hooking more than one system up and playing them at the same time (having friends over, LAN parties, whatever) you'll probably have to assign unique DNS addresses (I believe) or else each system you connect online to will disconnect the previous since they can't share addresses. Be on the lookout for this Sunday's advertisements. Often Best Buy and Comp-USA have decent mail-in rebates on routers. Try not to spend over 50 bucks max on a router if you'll just be needing it for gaming. You won't need any high-tech features. Also, don't let the salesman trick you into some way over-priced ethernet cord. A cheapo basic cord works just fine.
