Guest tank_abbott Report post Posted January 17, 2003 I was a mere lad of 3-4 years old in 1986 when I believe this incident took place: I vaguely remember Snuka vs Bockwinkel for the AWA title (It could be Snuka vs a jobber, my mind is fuzzy, but I remember the match being important) , Col. DeBeers comes down and pushes Snuka off the top turnbuckle as he is going for the "Superfly leap" Snuka falls to the floor and DeBeers hits a piledriver on him on the cement and Snuka bleeds all over the place. (Upon further thought Larry Zybyzko may have been the man vs Snuka, given Bockwinkel was a face at this point) Okay I know Snuka/ DeBeers fueded in the AWA at around this point, am I remembering the set up correctly??? Or was my mind thinking of this match: (1983-84ish WWF) Jimmy Snuka vs. Ray Stevens That all leads to this, a match between the newly free Snuka and Ray “The Crippler” Stevens. But Albano runs in before anything happens and threatens Snuka, so Snuka attacks. Ray takes off his necklace and starts choking Snuka, so Albano grabs a bottle and breaks it over his head. Jimmy blades like a madman, running it over and over his forehead. Albano keeps hitting him, and if you know Jimmy, you know he’ll never let you down when it comes to juicing. Stevens tosses him and attacks the wound. He then piledrives him on the floor to a horrified sounding Vince McMahon. Stevens does it a second time, and in a nice touch, he does it in a pool of soda that someone threw at Stevens. By the way, Snuka sells it PERFECTLY, his body jolting with each piledriver. Snuka grabs his head, jerking around, and Pat Patterson adds “Well, we ain’t gonna see Snuka for a long, long time.” Superb angle, though really from 1980-1985 was there ever a BAD Snuka angle? PS I am not thinking of 1988-89 when the AWA had DeBeers pile driver Sgt. Slaughter on the Cement, and the R n R Express saved him... HELP PLEASE OLD SCHOOLERS!!!!!!!! Guest JHawk Report post Posted January 18, 2003 I remember seeing a tape of the Snuka-Stevens piledriver (late-1982, just after his face turn). I didn't follow the AWA until mid-1987 so I can't tell you about that one.
Guest tank_abbott Report post Posted January 18, 2003 I may have to start posting on Wrestlingclassics.com as there doesn't seem to be many people who go in the Old School forum here.... I wish that would change...
Guest imajackoff? Report post Posted January 18, 2003 I remember the Snuka-Stevens incident very well. However, I dont remember the specifics fo the Snuka-DeBeers feud. I remember one scenerio of DeBeers refusing to wrestle Snuka because he was "black". ugh. I think I tried to supress this matchup in my memory because by that time Snuka was slow and fat and DeBeers was DeBeers.
Guest Corey291 Report post Posted January 21, 2003 Don't leave yet Tank! The Snuka piledriver segment took place in the WWF in 1982. Snuka had just broken away from Lou Albano, and had turned babyface. In that particular segment, Don Muraco was taunting Snuka who was in the ring. Snuka then did an incredible dive over the top rope onto Muraco and was beating the hell out of him, when Ray Stevens ran in and helped Muraco beat Snuka into the ground, finishing him off with a piledriver. -Corey
Guest tank_abbott Report post Posted January 22, 2003 On the www.kayfabememories.com board I was informed it was indeed Snuka / Debeers
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted January 25, 2003 I think your Snuka vs DeBeers memory is pretty much correct. I may have this taped someplace...I'd have to do some looking to find it. I can picture DeBeers pushing Snuka off the top rope to the floor and then doing either a piledriver or a pedigree type move on the concrete. And it may have been Zybysko that Snuka was wrestling......it may have been for a shot at Bockwinkel's AWA title.
Guest Black Tiger Report post Posted January 25, 2003 We must be the same age then Tank, because I have a memory of this being the same age as you were. Snuka was wrestling against Larry Z. and as he goes for the Superfly, DeBeers comes out and pushes him off the top rope. DeBeers then proceedes to do a reverse Piledriver (as in drop him face first) A quick look at my dad's ENORMUS collection of old PWI etc from that era tells me that Snuka would have to wrestle DeBeers for a shot at the AWA title. DeBeers who probably had one of the first racist gimmicks in wrestling at that point was refusing to wrestle Snuka saying he's black. You may have confused this with the WWF angle, because in regional days territories were allowed to mention one another and with Stevens in AWA and Albano OUT of WWF, I'm sure AWA mentioned in on TV. Ironic here is that DeBeers used to wrestle as "The Polish Prince" Ed Wiskowski and I'm sure that if he did that gimmick today, he'd be stuck in all sorts of racist feuds.
