Why can't we love Hogan again?

Recommended Posts

Guest HBK16

I loved to cheer for Hogan. The Wrestle Mania commercial reminded me of how great it felt. I don't know why I posted this but I just liked cheering for him back in the days. I don't know. Do you like cheering him or booing him? I for sure would love to cheer for him when I go to Raw on 4/8 (Sweet).

I was never a Hogan fan.  Even as a kid.

So you were a smark all your life as a wrestling fan?  How did you manage to do that when you were just a kid?

Maybe he just disliked Hogan...

Anyways, I dunno. Hogan's lost it. I hate how he goes and tries to scrape up some cheap heat. It would easy as hell for him to do a good face turn (as you might disagree with) but I could see the fans cheering for him... hell, that cheers for "The American Badass". He just needs to change a little...

Hogan's Face turn...

nWo are actually doing well (not having Austin kick the whole groups ass for starters...) and are about to "kill the WWF" or whatever. We're at the PPV and there is this big stip match about iff nWo wins, the WWF dies or some crap. It would probably be some 6 man elimination match nWo vs Austin, Rock and some other face... HHH maybe. It's down to Rock and Hogan. Hogan hits the Legdrop of mudda fugging DOOM and Vicne is screaming for him to pin Rock and finish it but no... Hogan doesn't want to kill what HE created.

Next night on RAW, Vince has Rocky on his side like the Corp kinda thing and we have Hogan v Vince.

Wuddya think?

Hogan vs. Vince+Rocky

I was never a Hogan fan.  I found myself more a fan of Randy Savage because he had that dark side.  Hogan just came across as way too corny for me, even when I was five.

I was never a Hogan fan either.

I've been actively watching WWF since about midway between WrestleMania 2 and WrestleMania 3.

I liked JYD.

I did like Warrior when he came in.

But I never liked Hogan.

I was sort of a semi-smark as a kid.  I liked who entertained me the best, but looking back some of my choices weren't that good.  Here were some guys I liked as a kid (started watching in March 1988, at age 7).

-Randy Savage

-Brutus Beefcake

-Ted Dibiase

-Demolition

-Bushwhackers

-Mr. Perfect

-The Genius

-Rick Martel

-Jake Roberts

-Powers of Pain

-Big Bossman

-Paul Roma

vs.  who I did not like

-Honky Tonk Man

-Rick Rude

-Tito Santana

-Akeem

-Greg Valentine

-Ron Bass

-Red Rooster

-Ron Garvin

-Haku

I was kind of indifferent towards both Hogan & Warrior.  I didn't hate them, but I didn't like them either.

I will definately be cheering for Hogan at Wrestlemania.  I'll probably be decked out in an nWo shirt and mooning everyone with my nWo boxers.  Not that I am a huge Hogan mark or that I want to see him wrestle on a regular basis, but I liked the nWo and I am not a very big Rock fan.

I started watching wrestling on a regular basis round 1991. Had I not been introduced to the greatness that was Flair*, I probably wouldn't have continued. I wasn't THAT big on Hogan- I liked Savage as my babyface because not only was he was wicked cool with those outfits and the well-timed "Ooo Yeah!"s, but he was nice and crazy to boot. Like it was said before, he had that dark edge to him and that coolness that the uber-corny heroic Hogan didn't have. Savage was all about being drug free, yeah, but he would kick your ass at the drop of a pin, unlike Hulk and his "look both ways before crossing the street" aura.

I thought Hogan was FUNNY, yeah, with his hulking up, stupid booming voice and moustache. He was entertaining like that. But he wasn't my "man". I always sat there thinking, "When is someone besides Hogan gonna get the big glory?"

My guys around when I started watching 'rasslin: (in order)

Ric Flair

Randy Savage

Undertaker

The Legion of Doom

Rick Martel

British Bulldog

Elizabeth

Mountie (hey, he was funny)

Bret Hart

Jake Roberts

*Off the record, my love for Flair isn't like other smarts, it's pretty markish- my reasons since '91 have always been because his interviews, how funny he was, his outfits, and his "Whoo!"s.

I thought exactly what the WWF told me to think until I discovered the Internet at age 15.  More or less.  I honestly remember being upset with the finish at WrestleMania IX, though.  My first ever independent thought about wrestling was, "What the fuck just happened and why?"

Back when I first started watching wrestling in the mid 80s, I did actually like Hogan. I used to buy all of the rip apart shirts, foam fingers, you name it. I was a fan of Steamboat more than anyone, but I guess the pure mark in me as a kid loved who everyone else kind of did, like Hogan, Warrior, etc. Another weird thing is I was a huge fan of the Big Bossman back then as well, but since he came back to the WWF, I can't hardly stand to watch any one of his matches.

When Flair came around to the WWF to feud with Hogan, I recall starting to get sick of the Hulkster. It was more a thing of that I was sick of seeing him doing the same crap over and over, and the way he was booked in the Rumble that Flair won made me sick of him even more (again, in a mark perspective)

When he came back to the WWF in 93, I couldn't stand it. By this time I knew that wrestling was predetermined and such, so I didn't understand the logic of continuing to bring him back and then give him the title again right now when it's been done so many times before. Then when he came to WCW, I was pretty pissed about that as well. At that point in time, I was watching WCW alot more than the WWF, until Hogan came into the fold. The feud with Flair was fun to watch, but after that, it got bad. Even as a heel, I couldn't stand him. And I sure as hell was glad when that whole incident happened at BATB.......I figured he would stay out of wrestling for good, and poetic justice was served.

Now what is totally bizzare is that I honestly don't mind seeing Hogan on the shows right now. I thought going into it, I would go crazy seeing him back, but it's not like that at all. Maybe I have given him a second chance so to speak, I'm not sure. But the way he's being booked is hardly Hogan overkill. There has been alot of retrospect in going back to the 80s Hogan in promos, etc.....so that may be it too.

I'm definately interested to see how he is used after Mania, that's for sure.

Maybe the best reason for this is that he has totally sucked ever since his return (why did they bring him back again?).  But I digress...

I remember watching wrestling occasionally when I was a child in the late '80s.  My hero was Andre the Giant, but Hogan was cool too (but not as cool as Savage w/ the "Oohhh Yea!").  Apparently back then I never realized or cared that his finisher was a leg drop.  A leg drop! That's what prevents me from fully cheering for Hogan now that I actually watch wrestling consistently and have been smarkified.  But hey, it'll be cool to see The People's Elbow vs. Hogan Legdrop for the worst over finisher in all of wrestling!

I cheered for Hogan then and still do.  I hope he beats Rock on Sunday.

But I also hated the Wrestlemania IX ending.  I was a huge Hogan fan and a total mark then and I still thought that ending was cheap and sucked.

I'm with the Hogan haters. My dad was the one the really got me into wrestling. It was the NWA. But he used to tell me how great Ric Flair was. After awhile that fact becomes apparent. So whenever I watched the WWF, Hogan seemed like a clown and people like Mr.Perfect, Ted Dibiase, Rick Rude, and Jake the Snake where the ones I liked.

LMAO, I thought the same thing when I was younger.  I never liked Hogan, ever.

to answer the question, Why can't we love Hogan again?  Simple, because his old ass is a horrible excuse for a wrestler, and should have retired years ago.  He stinks up the ring, he isn't believable any more, his mic skills are lacking, simply put he sucks.

I first started watching wrestling in 1993, after Hogan had left the WWF, so I didn't get to see him until the tv channel that showed wrestling in Sweden started showing WCW when former swedish olympic wrestling great Frank Andersson was hired by WCW, which was in early 1994, right before Spring Stampede 1994. It should also be pointed out that the swedish announcers did not particularly care about kayfabe and would cheer for whomever they thought was the best performer in the ring. Anyway, when Hogan first came in he managed to piss me off by getting to beat my favorite wrestler at the time, Ric Flair. Then I had to endure crappy match after crappy match with Hogan, growing more and more frustrated that he never lost the title and let somebody else get a moment in the sun, and also over the fact that he brought his friends with him, which proceded to dramatically reduce the quality of the shows. As 1994 came to a close I hated Hogan so much that I actually cheered for the Butcher (Brutus Beefcake) to beat him. Then when was pretty much off the air in early 1996 I was overjoyed. But that wasn't to last, as then he turned heel and again became the center of attention, and actually almost managed to prevent me from enjoying the nWo angle. I didn't even want to see him lose and get humiliated, I just wanted him to go away and never come back.

I think watching it live, u have no choice but to cheer for hogan. I love the heel "holywood" version of hogan, but if ever comes back to the yellow and red i'll just puke.

Once i discovered NWA and Ric Flair i began to dislike Hogan.

This turned into hatred at WrestleMania 9.

The WCW debut brought banging of my head against the wall.

The Doomsday cage match made me yell "why god why".

The bash at the beach turn was cool, but there was too much a hole of unadulterated hat to climb out of.

which was made deeper by the fingerpoke fiasco.

Having said all that, im actually enjoying him lately. The confrontations with Rock have been great and him asking the "whatch gonna do?" line on Smackdown was great.

Im willing to give him a chance, he's been entertaining so far.

well see how wrestlemania goes

The feud with the Rock has been built up decent enough so as long as the match tomorrow isn't a #### train wreck, I'll be happy with his performance since entering the WWF.

Hogan did break his ribs the other day. Many people are saying its just an excuse for a shitty match tomorow night.

You know what's really sad, Hogan v. Yoko was rated as the best finish in WM history on the WM specail on TNN. I wasn't fimilar with it, and I thought that Hogan at least had a 5-10 match, not 5-10 seconds. Wow, was that retarded.

That's about as credible as the Apter mag awards.

I haven't liked Hogan since WM3 when Savage-Steamboat tore down the house and the main event was a farce.

I think it is hard for us fans who grew up watching his tired act to cheer for the guy when his act and moveset are so outdated. Wrestling has evolved but Hogan hasn't.

dude, i've been screaming the same thing for weeks. I've been telling everybody that once the surprise factor wore off we would be left with an old washed-up, past his prime, half cripple who can't perform in the ring.
