Guest raptor Report post Posted January 18, 2003 I'd like to be as pessimitic as all of you guys will probably be, but what the hell: WHOOO FUCKING HOO!! VENOM'S BACK! ... hopefully they'll do it right.
Guest MrRant Report post Posted January 18, 2003 I will order.
Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted January 18, 2003 Marvel used the same tactic when they were pimping Venom's new run in Amazing Spider-Man as the Venom story to buy. Until I see the book on the shelves I'm not going to put any effort in trying to get myself worked up over the return of a super villain who's shell life was 5 years. The poster looks nice but looks can be deceiving.
Guest Steviekick Report post Posted January 18, 2003 did you see the poster like that which has a Namor like character in the background blacked out? Screw Venom, bring on the Sub Mariner

Guest starvenger Report post Posted January 22, 2003 I was gonna start a new topic, but I figured that since it relates to Venom that I'd just bump this one instead. Here's the 411 on the new titles, courtesy of Newsarama.com (all shills courtesy Marvel Comics): NAMOR Cover by Mizuki Sakakibara Bill Jemas & Andi Watson (w), Mizuki (cover to X-Men Unlimited #44) Sakakibara (a) THE PRINCE OF ATLANTIS IS BACK! Beneath the waves, well out of sight from human land dwellers, lies the undersea empire of Atlantis, and its heir is a young hero who yearns for the world above water even as he struggles to maintain his undersea birthright. Japanese manga sensation Mizuki Sakakibara brings the exotic undersea world of young Prince Namor to life in all of its lush and delicate splendor, and writers Bill Jemas (ORIGIN, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN) and Andi Watson (BREAKFAST AFTER NOON) weave a romantic tale of a young hero who finds love above the waves while gradually coming to terms with who he is. Namor #1 is just 25 cents! Be sure to stock-up on issue #2! Things get complicated for young Prince Namor when he meets a beautiful land dwelling girl! 32 PGS. WITH ADS/FC/ALL AGES...$2.25 YOSHII...er VENOM #1 Cover by Sam Kieth Daniel Way (w)/Francisco Herrera (p) Venom's back and has popped up near the Arctic Circle, leaving a trail of dead bodies in his wake. Now able to jump from host-to-host with the greatest of ease, Venom is on the run from mysterious forces, each with their own agenda for the elusive alien. But is this the same Venom that we've come to know and fear? How does Eddie Brock figure in this? A big budget, sci-fi/horror, rollercoaster ride that reintroduces one of Spider-Man's most deadly foes into the Marvel Universe. 32 PGS. WITH ADS/FC/MARVEL PG...$2.25 SENTINEL Cover by UDON Sean McKeever (w)/UDON (p) "SALVAGE" Part 1 Juston Seyfert is about to make a discovery that will change his life: the ravaged remains of a giant robot buried in his family's salvage yard! But what could a downtrodden, disillusioned high school sophomore possibly do with a 30-foot tall engine of destruction? Anything he wants! "SENTINEL is a teen sci-fi drama about finding your voice, learning to stand up for yourself without being irresponsible, and discovering what it means to be a hero in the 21st century," says writer Sean McKeever. "Oh yeah, it's also about a boy and his giant robot." 32 PGS. WITH ADS/FC/MARVEL PG...$2.99 HUMAN TORCH Cover by Skottie Young Karl Kesel (w)l/Skottie Young (p) "BURN" Part 1 Deep inside, Johnny Storm has a burning desire for … something … and not just when he bursts into flame as the Human Torch. Though rich, famous & privy to sights and experiences most people can't imagine, something's missing - A direction. A purpose. A spark… Writer Karl Kesel and future superstar artist Skottie Young reignite that spark and redefine the FF's youngest, most impetuous member. Now more fire-like than ever, Johnny is capable of great warmth, and even greater fury. Is he always on the edge of exploding into a raging inferno, or just having so much fun he wants everyone to think so?! 32 PGS. WITH ADS/FC/MARVEL PG...$2.50 MYSTIQUE Cover by Joseph Michael Linsner Brian K. Vaughan (w)/Jorge Lucas (p) "DEAD DROP GORGEOUS" Part 1 Mystique can be anything you want her to be… In a world of intrigue and seduction, where mutants are feared and hated and the X-MEN are not enough to protect them, Mystique uses her shape-shifting abilities to further her own mutant rights agenda. And to get want she wants, she's not afraid to do WHATEVER's necessary. Mystique's true motives are put to the test in this brand new beginning for the mutant chameleon. 32 PGS. WITH ADS/FC/MARVEL PG...$2.99 RUNAWAYS Cover by Jo Chen Brian K. Vaughan (w)/Adrian Alphona (p) At some point in their lives, all young people believe that they have something to runaway from home for? But what if it they REALLY do? When six young friends discover that their parents all share a deep, dark secret, the shocked teens find strength in one another and together run away from their homes and straight into the adventure of their lives. Smallville meets Harry Potter in this all-ages action/adventure series. 32 PGS. WITH ADS/FC/MARVEL PG...$2.5 Here's some more stuff from Newsarama about this program, called "Tsunami". My thoughts... Apparently, this "Tsunami" program is meant to get these comics to bookstores asap so that 14-year old girls can pick up the books. Namor: Mizuki Sakakibara... that's the guy that best all the Gracies in Pride, right? Also, it's nice to see that Jemas isn't trying to push his book by making issue #1 $0.25 or anything... Venom: Well, Sam Keith's Venom looks pretty sweet, but it remains to be seen whether a 14-year old girl will pick up a book about a psychotic, murderous alien symbiote and it's host. Yoshii might actually have been a better idea. Sentinel: I like the art that UDON does, dunno about the premise though. I suppose that this is your mecha manga-esque book. Human Torch: Skottie Young's art doesn't really impress me. Plus he spells his name funny. Mystique: Man, can Lisner draw an ass or what? And do ya think that her kids will show up at some point? Runaways: This is probably the only title that I can see 14-year old girls liking. Anyways, I can't see myself buying any of these titles, but I guess the true litmus test for Marvel will be when the TPBs hit the bookstores. Will they sell like 'traditional' manga, or will they sit on the shelves like CrossGen TPBs?
Guest raptor Report post Posted January 23, 2003 I think I'm getting Venom and Mystique, but the others don't really impress me. I will by the 25 Cent Namor, though.

Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted January 24, 2003 Boooooooooo!!!! Seriously, Venom's cool, but they buried the poor bastard when he got his own book. Remember when there were like 6 other symbiots and he had to fight them all?
Guest raptor Report post Posted January 25, 2003 I'd agree with you, Smell the ratings!!!, but this Venom isn't the Lethal Protectos anymore. He's apparently a serial killer again, which means that I'm going to give it a chance.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted January 25, 2003 I have a question: Why is starvenger so worried about 14 year old girls? They're not going to buy comics anyway, and although I am in favor of the business branching out a bit, who have to remember where the fanbase is. That's the reason Spider-man is still here and Millie the Model isn't.

That's the reason Spider-man is still here and Millie the Model isn't. Hey, that's what Jemas and Quesada were saying in the interviews. I have no idea how they managed to come up with that, but I figured I'd use it in a somewhat cynical way...

Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted February 7, 2003 So far the Ultimate Venom storyline looks to be a sales success with each one of the issues to have come out reaching the $10 mark in back issues sales. Time will tell us however, whether or not the story will be a creative achievement of just another premature ejaculation by Marvel.
