Lets have another console system!

Recommended Posts

A Tampa-Bay, Florida area technology company called Infinium Labs is working on a high performance game console system that it says will outperform the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and the GameCube. Scheduled for release in December 2003, the new system is called Phantom, and Infinium Labs has high hopes that it can do things that the other big boys in the console space can only dream of doing. According to this press release issued today the company, the Phantom will be the fastest console on the market when it is released late this year and will offer a variety of services at launch including preloaded games (according to the company nearly potentially thousands), cross-platform capabilities (what platforms were disclosed), and wireless and accessory support, online support, seamless upgrade and patch system for software, a subscription service for games for all segments of the market ( casual, moderate and hard-core), the ability to demo games before purchase, Games on Demand, and game rentals. The console will heavily support online broadband connectivity which will help facilitate other aspects like buying games over the internet and the ability to rent games online.

Infinium Labs Says that it will have a prototype ready in March. While it wasn't stated in the company's release, it sounds like the Phantom may very well be unleashed at the Game Developers Conference. Details on whether or not game developers have begun embracing this system are not known at this time, but we'll keep you posted.

EQ is very skeptical

but let's say it comes out... from what you read, are you interested in it?

;) Very XBox-ish

As a consumer, imagine sitting in front of your television and having potentially hundreds of thousands of gaming choices at your fingertips. Imagine a system so advanced that it allows you to immediately subscribe to gaming packages, pay per play, demo games you are looking to purchase and seamlessly upgrade your system requirements and patches.

Imagine a system so intuitive that young children can access it independently while parents rest easy knowing that they are playing only age appropriate games. Imagine playing people from all over the world and participating in massive multi-user tournaments. Imagine a system that is based on open standards and allows you to play Phantom console owners and users on other systems such as PC’s.

Sound too good to be true? That's because it probably is. I love the part about the kids only being able to access age appropriate games... HA! Yeah! Right!

cross-platform capabilities

Does that mean emulation? I'd be interested if it could play PSX games in high resolution.

Yeah this does fall into the 'sounds too good to be true' catagory. I'm am very skeptical at this point in time, what wiv the cross platform idea (I mean how could they buy the rights to host other consoles games).

Also I find the picture a bit tacky....

It is deffinatly only a designing picture, i mean is there anywhere you can see that you could put a cd in?

I mean look at it, when I see a picture of the actual machine and see it's specs then I'll actually believe it.

I guess at the next major game Expo we'll find out...

They said they'll release info in March, the next major game expo is the Game Developers Conference in March, so maybe they'd be looking to debut it to some Developers there. We'll have to wait and see.

Too many outrageous claims and they says its going to be released before the end of the year which is way too quick if you ask me.

They haven't even announced which developers are going to be onboard also.

Now that I think about it, this thing sounds like another coming of the Sega Channel. I'll be tracking this story with much skepticism.

The conceptual design looks like a cable modem with an X-Box controller next to it, and that "Phantom" logo looks awfully familiar, but I can't put a finger on where I've seen it.

Hmmm, promising what they can't deliver.

Has WWE invested in this endeavor?...
