Extreme Metal on MTV2...

Recommended Posts

Guest NoCalMike

They played Arch Enemy tonight. They still mix in not so "extreme" bands, but so far it seems the show is ACTUALLY COMMITTED to playing metal that would not normally hear on MTV2....I give it about 6 - 8 months before some MTV exec demands that timeslot is filled with Korn Diary reruns. I think the show is Tuesday and Wednesday nights, 10:30 - 11:30(pacific time)

You know, believe it or not, I've seen that show play some decent shit. They always fall right back into the same rut with Slipknot and stuff, but they get in a couple decent songs here and there.

I caught Opeth, Arch Enemy, Hatebreed, and Fozzy on Extreme Rock. Yeah, so Fozzy sucks, but seeing the video was still cool.

yeah, if you stick around till like 3am there's some fine shit. I never get to see party hard or she is beautiful normally, because all the mallfucks hate him, but they still show up on there. Even jetplane landing had one on there a while back. Worst vid ever like, but it was nice to see.

I also miss MTVX. Then they replaced it with MTV Jams, and later, MTV Hits. Bastards.

I never watch any MTV network these days, but this Extreme Metal show could get me to tune in. From the sound of it, it has be better than regular MTV's 'All Things Rock' (the show hosted by those two wankers from Good Charlotte) and MuchUSA's 'Uranium.'

Y'know, the MTV channels here in Britain aren't really that annoying, particularly MTV2. MTV2 has a music show called Gonzo which I just find really funny. And yeah, late at night they do play some pretty good more obscure stuff. Like Aphex Twin, proprietor of the most disturbing music videos ever.

M2 use to be a great channel in the states as well. However then it basically became MTVlite. They still ocassionaly have good video blocks, but sadly it's nowhere as good as the channel use to be.

Extreme Rock is 50/50 but 50 of it is good shit.

Well, Kerrang plays some of the more extreme stuff late at night, specifically the Prodigy's video for Smack My Bitch Up, which I never get tired of seeing...but yeah, you're right. Kerrang officially ceased to be relevant to anything once they allowed Avril FUCKING Lavigne on their channel. And she got to number 1! On a supposed hard rock channel! :bonk: Gheyness incarnate, that. But MTV2 is good stuff. They just did a really cool hour of hip-hop, as in specifically non-mainstream/recent stuff. I saw a Roots Manuva video that I can safely say is the funniest music video I have ever seen. But jeez, there's a ton of great hip-hop out there that never hits the mainstream. A real shame that aside from a few exceptions mainstream hip-hop is so comprehensively neutered.

Nothing is better than Uranium. I mean I don't care about the videos of course, I just like to watch the host chick.

Is that the video where it's a parody of mainstream rap videos? If that's it then i agree it was a funny as hell video.

Roots Manuva kicks ass. Was it 'Witness - one hope'? Where he goes back to school so he can win all the events at sports day? Fantastic.

The little extreme Metal I've seen, I've decided that I usually like that kind of music, but I don't like the growling singing. Like, for example, that song by Arch Enemy is really good, except for the singing. Are there any bands with that kind of good musicianship that don't use that kind of gut-growling-singing?

Juliya makes me froth at the mouth in a wonderful way that I cannot relate with words.

And Eric, you're in the wrong genre if you don't like death growls. If you don't mind screaming, try some Dillinger Escape Plan. You might dig stuff like Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, and other power metal, although it completely lacks the balls of death metal. It's still good for what it is, I guess. I just don't get into it at all.

By the way, get some Acid Bath if you've never heard them. They're completely sinister, but the singer doesn't growl at all. Imagine a satanic Jim Morrison playing metal.

Acid Bath is one of the few bands that just MAKES me want to mosh (and I'm not a fan of moshing myself, although I do encourage it).

And Eric, extreme metal is just a term used to describe bands that fall into the death sub-category of metal, and all of death's off-branches (deathgrind, brutal death, melodic death, etc.). I BELIEVE it could also apply to black metal, but don't quote me.

I REALLY don't know anything about any of that, I just used the term "Extreme Metal" because it was in the topic. I mean, I didn't want to do some awful snafu "I don't really like deathmetal like Slipknot" so I didn't try to catagorize anything. I really like any skillful fast electric guitar playing, which that one Archenemy song I saw had, but I just get so dismayed by the growling.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm not trying to diss your music or nothing, it's just not my bag...

Eric, you'd actually be amazed at how fast the growling of death metal and the screeching of black metal can grow on you. I HATED it at first, but it very quickly grew on me. You just need to listen to it enough, and then you start wondering why you listened to music without it in the first place. Heh...

So, I'd suggest trying to find the following tunes to help get into that style of vocals (growls/screeches), because the music is definitely one thing that helps:

Dark Tranquility - "Dobermann"

Absu - "Our Lust For Lunar Plains"

The Crown - "Under The Whip"

Marduk - "Dreams Of Blood And Iron"

If MTVX was MTV Rock then I too miss the channel.

That channel helped make my sick days fly by as I just sat around, drank liquids and watched long amounts of MTVX (Rock?) and enjoyed my time on the couch.

Does anyone here know why MTVX (Rock?) was replaced with MTV Jamz?

Well i believe they had planned to do different types of specialty channels from the start and MTVX was just the first one.

I figure they were just experimenting to see what got the most interest as a specialty music channel.
