Guest TUS_02 Report post Posted January 22, 2003 This X-mas, I got a new system as a present, it was put together and when I tried to run it, it wouldn't want to load Windows... so I reformated and tried to install windows, but it wouldn't work. It would freeze while loading files to computer... so I had a friend take home and play with it to see what he could find. It turns out he got it to work by replacing my 30 gig HD with a small 7 gig hard drive. So I figure I'd use the extra moiney I got for X-mas and get a 60 gig Hard Drive since Im under the assumption the 30 gig one doesn't work. So we decided to install it (the 60 gig) last night. And as we're installing windows... it freezes in the exact same spot as the 30 gig one did. Now, it's not the disk because it was a fresh new one. But what exactly is the problem? Why would it install windows on the small 7 gig one, but refuse to work for the 30 or gig hard drives?
Guest Dace59 Report post Posted January 22, 2003 I assume you've got it jumpered and formated the blank drive correctly. Doesn't make much sense. Where does it frezze and with what error?
Guest TUS_02 Report post Posted January 22, 2003 The jumpers are set correctly and the drive was formatted like it should. It freezes in the first screen of loading windows... it's a blue screen and it looks like DOS. It's loading files into the computer so the exe can work. It loads these files for about 20 seconds, then it freezes. There is no error... it just freezes.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted January 23, 2003 What version of Windows are you trying to install?
Guest TUS_02 Report post Posted January 23, 2003 T'was XP.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted January 25, 2003 I've installed XP on drives ranging from 8 gigs up to 120, so the size of the drive shouldn't matter... NTFS can deal with drives whose capacity is still a ways off, anyway. I'd try deleting your partition using FDISK in addition to reformatting, then building it again. Let the XP disc do the formatting into NTFS for you. It'll take longer for the install, but it might work.
Guest I'm That Damn Zzzzz Report post Posted January 25, 2003 Try updating the BIOS (go to the motherboard company website.) The current BIOS may reject any hard drive larger than 8.4 GB.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted January 26, 2003 I thought about that, IDTZ, but the fellow did say it was a new system. That restriction shouldn't be in place, but I guess there's always a chance. TUS, you might also want to try having the BIOS auto-detect the hard drive. If there issues with it recognizing the size of the drive, you'll see it then. If it reports the drive size accurately, your BIOS should be good to go.
Guest TUS_02 Report post Posted January 26, 2003 Well, I figured out what to do for the meantime... I'm still using the 7 gig HD as my master, but Im using the 60 gig as the slave. And before you ask, yes, it's working fine. Doesn't really help in the long run, since the 7 gig is a loaner... but we'll see what happens. Thank you though, gentlemen.
