The aging action star, who has long boasted of doing all his own stuntwork, used as many as seven stand-ins on ''The Tuxedo'' by Gary Susman Jackie Chan is famous for boasting that he does all his own stunts, even making a point of showing the evidence in outtakes at the end of his movies. Alas, the 48-year-old action-comedy star is finally giving in to the ravages of time and multiple on-set injuries. Chan, whose ''Shanghai Knights'' hits theaters next month, tells the Associated Press that he's started to use stand-ins for some stunts. ''I will use stunt doubles if you ask me to ride an F-16 jet fighter, or to jump over a series of hurdles with a crazy horse, or to perform two 720-degree somersaults,'' he tells AP. ''But one somersault, I'll do it. I will do what I could do and I won't do anything that is out of my capability.'' The Hong Kong-born actor's comments came in response to a recent story in the South China Morning Post that claimed Chan used as many as seven stunt doubles on last year's DreamWorks release ''The Tuxedo.'' The paper quoted Chan as saying it was not his decision to use the stand-ins, and that studio executives ''call the shots.'' However, Chan has also acknowledged in the past that his battered body wouldn't be able to handle action work forever, and that he'd like to move into straight drama.
Guest Kingpk Posted January 22, 2003 Report Posted January 22, 2003 Hey, he wasn't going to do it forever by himself. Of course, EVERYTHING (except the cast, really) was wrong about The Tuxedo, so I shouldn't be surprised. After this, I wonder if we'll ever see a Rush Hour 3?

Seeing as how he's put out very few good films in recent years (or at least, really impressive fight sequences), he should've quit a few years ago while he was ahead. As for being a "serious actor", he plays comedy pretty well. Then again, that's probably just because racial stereotypes = RATINGS~!

I mean, it's one thing if the guy was in his prime - MAYBE then they'f let him do more of his own stuff. But at FIFTY, and in this day and age, get real - these big shots ain't gonna let anyone do all that risky shit. Just because Raymond Chow & co. let him risk his life every day in Hong Kong doesn't mean he's allowed to do the same here.
Guest imajackoff? Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 I never understood the alure of a guy who did his own stunts. At least in his American films, Chan's acting has, how you say, sucked. People have been forking over thier cash to see a stuntman act. Whoo hoo.

It's one of my favorite movies ever for Owen's subtle comedy. Then again, I'm a total Owen mark. Shanghai Noon is still a great movie though.
Guest WrestlingDeacon Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 Guys like John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart did their own stunts way into their fifities if the producers and directors would let them get away with it. But this mostly was simple fight scenes and falls. Harrison Ford still does a lot of his own stuff at 60. The plus of Jackie Chan was his creative invetiveness to do outlandish and difficult stunts. I imagine him to still be doing the basic stuff just the crazy hanging out of an airplane by a piece of dental floss around his leg shit will go by the wayside.
Guest Lethargic Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 What brought me to be a fan is the way he's so much like Buster Keaton and has even gone so far to re-create some of Keaton's stunts. But then again, even Jackie Chan doesn't have the sack to do some of the stuff Keaton did in the 20's.

Guest Zero_Cool Posted January 25, 2003 Report Posted January 25, 2003 Hey, no problem from me on him not leaping 200 feet through the air, over a nuclear power plant reactor. As long as the fight scenes don't have a stunt double every two seconds, it'll just be like it always has.
