odd ECW title change

Recommended Posts

Guest converge241

just from talking a little about some other ECW stuff i wanted to touch base on this, for those who remember and those who might not have been around for it

How weird was it that there was a title change in 2000 for the ECW Title between two people who didnt even relaly work for ECW?

Mike Awesome current champion jumps to WCW to help give Russo/Bischoff a surprise by attacking Nash

WCW allows Awesome to drop the belt in ECW

WWF lends newly signed Taz (with extra Z) to Heyman to win over awesome to take back the belt.

While Taz (z) has it he loses to current world champion HHH on Smackdown (non title after HHH defeated "technically world champ" Benoit who never lost the belt)

Taz(z) then drops the title to Dreamer who loses it same day to Justin Credible

a little convoluted eh?

why not have Dreamer just beat Awesome?

It was to show Awesome the proper way to do business...

Tazz jobbed the belt before jumping ship...

Awesome kept it...

So Tazz got to come back and rub it in Awesome's face...

Plus it was a nice suprise for the INdianapolis fans there that night. And ECW got its world title on Raw and Smackdown, what more could ECW ask for.

WWF always helped ECW out a little (when they weren't raiding them)...they've given ECW Al Snow and Taka on loan before.

Now Tazz is on tv every week and Awesome doesn't have a job.

yeah an ex employee, just like awesome

the title was treated as second rate on TV too

i mean it is, but thats DEFINETLY not proper wrestling business

i got all the dirt when it happened being a long time sheet subscriber , but looking back it still seems odd

Actually Awesome has done quite well for himself since leaving WWE. He is main eventing for All Japan. He was just in the main event going for the triple crown.

The idea was simple. Awesome showed he had almost no loyalty to ECW by not telling Heyman he was jumping, and jumping while he was still champion. Awesome worked ECW in between his FMW tours until he went full time in 1999 AFTER he was given the belt

Tazz was very loyal to ECW, he started in 1993, never left. When he did decide to jump to WWF, he jobbed the title to Awesome, he jobbed to Sabu on ECW TV, and he jobbed to RVD in his last match.

ECW put Taz over Awesome for the belt as a way to show their appreciation for his more professional actions.

Part of it was that a WCW wrestler got his ass beat by a WWF wrestler.

You know Vince had to love that

Yeah, the only way they could have made it better was if they'd shown the match on WWF tv...since it was only like 3 minutes anyway.

That was the beggining of the end for ECW and TNN. Partly due to ECW and partly due to TNN. ECW had to air that match the night after it happened to explain why Awesome was in WCW.

Had ECW waited one week and adverstised LOUDLY that next week on ECW on TNN A WWF wrestler vs. A WCW wrestler for the ECW title. Then had TNN air commericals for it for the whole week leading up to it, they'd have gotten a decent rating. But Heyman was in a hurry and TNN didn't even do any advertising for that Friday's show

I think TNN was more at fault for ECW's ratings. The only times I saw commercials for ECW on TNN, when when ECW on TNN was on a commercial break. Honestly, they didn't even try and promote them.

And as for Heyman waiting, the show was on a Wed, and ECW was on Friday. And by Wed morning the spoiler had already leaked that Tazz was going to be at the show...so I really don't know if it would have done ECW much good to wait.

But from what I heard WWF was suppose to shill ECW on TNN just once while Tazz was on, but they never did.
