I heard about this on the news yesterday. I remember someone posted here....I think it was Downhome, about some guy with an African type of name requesting help from him. He wanted to transport money to the U.S. This was scam, and they were successful. They got over $200,000 dollars from people in the U.S alone.

If they're successful, that can only mean one thing... they'll get encouraged and try to scam more people.

And hasn't this actually been going on for a few years?

There's a whole bunch of scams stemming from the Internet and Africa. Some personal experiences:

A few years ago a friend of mine got a multi-hundred dollar phone bill because some Nigerian phone-sex line connected him via the Internet.

When Newsweek did some story about AIDS and Africa, some organization saying they were an aid agency urged donations. Turns out it was a farce. (I may have some specifics wrong because this happened a few years ago.)

Another friend of mine got an email a few months ago from some "lawyer" from Nigeria saying that she had a dead relative over there that left her a bunch of money and that he could get it to her -- for a fee. I did a Google search of the city this lawyer was supposed to be from and it was a ghetto...
